- She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat (作りたい女と食べたい女) is known as a wholesome yuri manga (and drama) series about two women who develop a bond over cooking and eating. As an ace woman, I felt drawn to it in my own special way...and I soon found out why.
March/2024 update: Sakaomi Yuzaki recently posted on bluesky that Kasuga is demiromantic and Nomoto is demisexual. So, further confirmation that the title characters are also canonically aspec!

My original draft of this video included definitions about asexuality and how there’s not much ace representation in media, but I cut out those parts because I didn’t want to make this video too long and I also wanted to focus on joy. Oh! So that means Kasuga is allosexual but demiromantic and Nomoto is demisexual but alloromantic?
i had no idea this manga existed and now i’m ready to cry tears of joy seeing a manga about a fat woman with a plot that isn’t “UGLY, DISGUSTING FATTY wants to lose weight so she can FALL IN LOVE!!”. this might be one of the only two manga i’ve seen that represents fat women in a compassionate way while featuring them in a prominent role (the other one being Pochamani, which was unfortunately abandoned by its scanlators last i checked).
also, i am allosexual (i hope that’s the right term), but i’m really interested to read more manga about the ace experience. i don’t really understand what it’s like to be ace at all, but i imagine it’s very difficult, and the only manga i’ve seen an ace character in so far was Our Dreams at Dusk. which was fantastic, but the ace character in that series doesn’t really talk about that experience much. thank you for putting us on to this great manga, gonna start reading tonight!
Yeah the way she’s drawn is so fucking validating.
Like I bizarrely a lot of thinner friends think I as a fat woman would/should be validated by drawn “feeder art” but they usually exaggerate proportions in quite a dysmorphia inducing way.
Whereas this was like. Damn they’re not trying to hide her waistline or her chin or her bust, but they’re also not massively drawing the eye with a ton of detail. She just… is.
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 what’s confusing you Matty
@@mattybrunolucaszeneresalas9072 you don’t know the word validating?
It's nice to know there's more ace stories in Japanese media.
Japanese society is homophobic but there are plenty of LGBT stories in Manga throughout history.
Omg I only read vol 1 I didn’t know the MC is asexual! Like, was wondering why this manga about two adult women didn’t have an immediately simmering chemistry and had more of slow boil. That makes me so happy as an aro ace who has dated a woman before 💜
As an ace who loves to cooks for my friends, family, and roommates this was so relatable and keeping me hopeful on finding a fellow foodie ace to eventually cook with
As an ace lesbian, this series was a huge pleasant surprise for me! I thought it was just cute in general, but the fact that there's at least /two/ ace lesbian characters is amazing-I'd be blown away by there even being just one. It's so rare to see any kind of asexual sapphic representation!
How can you be an Ace AND lesbian? Picka lane, lady
@@MoeruAcckkountu is this a joke?
Knowing that the MC is ace is really cool. I started this manga a little while ago (I've read volume 1 so far). I was charmed by the grounded relationship between the two leads and the food antics (e.g. bucket flan).
Knowing that this manga will touch on the different types of relationships will give me something to look forward to.
(I'm aroace myself, but I dig it when aces all over the umbrella get their moments to shine in fiction)
Thank you so much for inviting me to be in this video! I thought it was lovely!
I have just finished watching the live action adaptation of this manga which I really enjoyed. And seeing this, it makes me so happy to see that Nomoto Yuki is actually ace! It also makes me hope that they will make more seasons of the live action adaptation since it was very nice to watch and I am loving the ace rep coming from Japan.
Actually, I mainly got into Japanese live action dramas from ace rep like in Koisenu Futari, and the heavy focus on food in a lot of the stories I've watched and read since keeps giving me aspec joy vibes (especially when it's intentionally used as such in dramas like Koisenu Futari and Konya Sukiyaki Dayo).
Loved watching this video and hearing how you related to it (especially with your personal relationship to food, and sharing food, as well) I will see if I can get the english translation and the time to read it soon :)
Although I’m agender aro ace, I enjoy this manga so much. There’s so much realistic and positive representation, and I can’t help but smile as I read through the wholesome story. Thank you for doing a masterful job in putting into words what makes this manga so special.
This was already on my to-read list the second I heard about it, but omg there is ACE rep too?!?! Could this series get any better?? Wow, I am super hyped to start it ^^ I follow the creator on Twitter too, and she seems like a very earnest and kind person. :)
I'm so glad you're talking about this manga! I love food, although more-so the eating than the cooking, so it was an absolute win for me. I love the dynamic the author has created for the women and can't wait to continue reading it.
( I tried to get my sister's girlfriend to check it out, but she didn't like that they weren't dating by the end of the 1st volume... 😅)
I have saved this video for two literal months until I was able to read the third volume! I am so glad this manga exists and it is touching us in tender spots. I am an ace lesbian and someone who loves cooking and eating, this manga feels like a warm hug for parts of me that are very rarely appreaciated. I am so grateful and excited it exists, and so glad it's having the same effect on other people like me! Thank you so much for the video, cheers!
Here via "That Dang Dad", good video, I might want to check out this manga, as I had not heard of it before.
*it's Totoko, not Tonako. Agggh, can't believe I didn't catch that in the edit. 😭
Well, now I know what video to reference when someone asks about my own asexuality. 😊 All of the food pics looked so delicious!
This is such an insightful video, and I really want to read it! Also very informative. :)
?
As an ace lesbian as well, man, the manga spoke to me on so many levels. I related to the both of them, who are also on the ace spectrum, i felt so represented and called off. I'm also a food lover, so i could relate even more, man, this is a literal masterpiece. I loved your video, hugs from Brazil!❤
Thanks for making this video.
Not enough people are talking about this fantastic manga.
I'm watching the live action, and it's such a wholesome series, I had a smile on my face the entire time. Will probably look for the mangá to read.
Hoooooo lesss goooo
Representation!
Even before the vid, it's just nice to see characters with different body types.
Edit: f*ck, the food drawings... they're too much.
Gonna have to watch this later.
Thank you for your video, the stories seems so cute !! And it's so good to see a lesbian (or gay) manga that doesn't involve sex scenes, like, directly in their chapter 2 you know ?
As a aroace, it's good to see the story that develop bonds between characters and develop moments they share through food ! This is important ! And the analogy with food ? Big Y E S 👌❤
My friend recommended the manga to me without giving me too much information, and the more I read the more I got stuck with this huge beaming smile on my face (discounting when Kasuga had that tense phonecall with her asshole dad and I almost cried). I hadn't been expecting the ace rep, but also the in depth explanation of the ace spectrum, and it made me so freaking happy.
Wow, you're a good cook!
Damn, definitely want these mangas once in english as a bi woman wholesome yuri enjoyer
Okay, ngl I’ve been wondering whether I was some kind of demi and your analogy about needing a very specific food and it being an acquired taste is definitely something I relate heavily to. So. I guess I am!
Also I’ve been meaning to read this for ages but haven’t got round to it yet. But I figured out what the spoiler was from just the title and your warning even existing, so, I kept going. Friends have talked about it so I thought I knew all the broad strokes. Plus I don’t care much about that anyway. It’s really cool to see one of those online pride flag infographics in a manga!
Also also! I’m pleasantly surprised by how much of these I could read o.o I’ve just been doing kana and kids’ kanji with no expectation to understand anything besides transcribed western words in katakana on remote controls. So that’s kind of a cool feeling… reading her nervously asking to go out and then hearing you describe it that way was like “whoa. Whoa it didn’t take me 10 minutes to read that. Whoa I actually got it”.
So thanks for three unexpected feelings of discovery in a video I expected to know most about besides specific plot stuff!
October 17 can’t come any faster!! Argggggi live this manga serie! I’m not ace but I am a lesbian and it’s so nice seeing lesbians not being oversexualize or them being used for jokes or being adressed as close friends! So refreshing!!
Where did you find this series, to read in English?
Somehow I click in MC is ace since beginning
I WATCHED THE FIRST SEASON OF THIS LIVE-ACTION YURI J-DRAMA, BUT WHERE CAN I WATCH THE SECOND SEASON? 👩❤️👩🏳️🌈💖🍜🥘🍘🍙🍲🍚🍱🍛🥗🍝🫕🥙🌯🫔🌮🤤📺🤔
I’m Ace and Sapphic and JAUHXJDND I NEED TO READ THIS MANGA where can I find it
Yen Press is releasing the English language version. You can get it pretty much anywhere you get books (for the digital version, I recommend Bookwalker)
Have you seen 恋せぬふたり yet? It has a pretty good representation of a AroAce relationship.
I looked it up a while ago and can't find where to watch it. Is it on Japanese Netflix?
@@PrettyTranslatorSarahMoon don't think so? unfortunately i had to download it in order to watch it.
Since when "sapphic" means all that stuff??? Sappho was a lesbian so that was supposed to be all, but anyways... 😂
She’s not ace lol
Have you not read the third book?
Wholesome yuri? Honey thats an oxymoron
This isint what this is even
4:47 since when lol
Its really hard to separate asexualoty and aromance when using food as an anology
Hmm, 4 people who are all Name1234 posted back to back to back? Isn't it sad you have to sock puppet like this, you weirdo? Don't you have people in your life who love you? Go spend time with them, you need it!
7:01 A good story is a good story but calling it realistic is a megastretch dude and I find your descriptions patronising
4:20 dafuq does validating have do so with shlt
8:26 ? You did not make this wtf
it's okay not to post if you don't understand something, you can just listen and try to be empathetic. It'll make you a better, happier person, trust me!
for 7:01...your descriptions? The quote was from someone else, not the person who made the video.
4:20 She put that it was validation to her because this basically was her reality, cooking and sharing food with her loved ones, sometimes dealing with normal adult issues, being LGBTQ, etc. Apparently you don't understand that what is 'patronizing' for you can still be realistic for others.
ALSO if you're talking about the art at the timestamp...that's been her icon for quite a while so where tf have YOU been? Please start putting 2 and 2 together before commenting. I know I have trouble with that too, but man...Your comment was just not that good of a reaction. L take
I think you're trying to sound contrarian without understanding the video
@@KirbyFanDude I’m aware I’m aware it’s not by Sarah.
What do you mean her icon??
I’m afraid you still didn’t really answer my questions I understood that you tried.
@@PeopleOfTheAir why would I want to do that ._. I just see inconsistencies and point them out
thought this was "Dont touch Eikozen" at first.
i dont like the editing.
