I have been a fan of Fire & Ice for many decades. I can't believe it took 8 years for youtube to suggest this to me. It was a great watch. I loved seeing some of the process of creating the film.
The volume of work for this is unreal, it really makes you appreciate the content even more. I watched the making of heavy metal once. There’s a scene in the Taarna sequence, where she flies over a landscape. They literally sculpted a 20 foot mini landscape and filmed it to create the effect in animation.
This was a gem of a find. Fire and Ice was one of my favorite cult fantasy films. It was truly ahead of it's time in a number of ways evidenced in this video. I think I'll go watch it again...
Just a heads up for those unfamiliar with animation. Rotoscoping is a hell of a lot faster than traditional hand drawn animation. Bakshi often struggled to fund his projects and cut costs in incredibly clever ways. The incorporation of actual Nazi propaganda into the movie Wizards is an excellent example of this.
It’s how Bakshi did a lot of his films. He did a Lord of the Rings & Hobbit rendition doing this. When I was a kid, that was THE Lord of the Rings rendition, to watch. Peter Jackson’s didn’t come out till I was in college. But, yeah. Ralph Bakshi did a lot of these. I want to say Heavy Metal was done similar to Rotoscoping. I could be wrong.
Million thanks to the photographer & cartoonist. This was made in 1980's. Performance capture - cartoon film. Wow it's handmade. - special. Think Avatar was released in 2009. With same concept but it was made in computer. Compare you find animals in Avatar is toys. The horses or zeebras. When it's runs in the ground.
Just a reminder for those who (for whatever reason) dislike rotoscope animation, cgi is basically a digital version of that in many ways. Especially for videogames. We all start somewhere.
The rotoscoping worked well in this instance and fit the realist barbarian genre. Let's not forget that even Disney used to rotoscope quite a few of their animation sequences.
If you look at my other video you can see her. Also if you do look, tell me if the sound is working. RUclips fucks up so much it doesn't seem to play the sound on that video FOR ME no matter how many times I refresh the damn thing.
Such a refined process, that took so long to create…that we’ve now mostly lost, with computer graphics making animation easier & faster. Still miss the hand-worked stuff a lot. Added character. Ti the films. Even in bigger blockbuster life-action movies, with things like Tron. Felt like there was more imagination, creativity, & just an overall sense of wonderment back then.
Wow...probably all or most of these people either old or dead by now...including frazetta...I once talked to frazettas daughter Holly about this movie and she agreed her dad frank frazetta got ripped off doing this movie...greed is sinful.
@@thereturningshadow Disney did some rotoscoping with older movies like Snow white! I LOVE how Bakshi does it. It definitely is a lot of work but for the realism//dark fantasy look of the comics in this style of Frank Frazetta, it fits in perfectly for this movie.
Канал По сути .Disney used to film EVERY single piece of action involving realistic humans since snow white. If you don't believe me, just make a search on you tube and you'll see that most of the time, the only difference is the stylisation of the character design.

Man how the fuck did they manage to sit through all this extremely hard work?
Well done everyone, and the result shows!
And that's why the entertainment business is weak nowadays... From the 🎥 movies to 🎶 music

Old is gold always..
This cartoon has life in it.

No words to describe this sort of magnanimous challenge. Bless you all eho put in this kind of effort.

Thank you so much for sharing this!
I have never seen animation modeled over live action. That looks incredible!

This so awesome..better animation i ever see in 2023… the movement is like real pic..this is so amazing

I can’t imagine people not liking it. I really get lost in the characters movements.
Not all CGI can be compared to rotoscoping, only mocap. There is a lot of keyframe animation in CGI that is done manually/intuitively.

One of the great fantasy films of my generation! I put it right up there with Conan the Barbarian!
Great stuff. Animation at its peak, before computers. I was hoping to be able to see the real Tigra though. XD
If you look at my other video you can see her. Also if you do look, tell me if the sound is working. RUclips fucks up so much it doesn't seem to play the sound on that video FOR ME no matter how many times I refresh the damn thing.
Returning Shadow Alright, I'll take a look.
Returning Shadow Okay so you have four videos. Number one is silent. "Fire and Ice - Sean Hannon Diary Notes"
It could be a copyright issue I suppose.
That's the one I was referring to. Could be, but if you watch you will be able to see the Tigra actress.
Returning Shadow Yes, I saw. Thanks.

Long live analogue!
Какой же отличный вышел мультфильм. Очень его люблю. На кадры разбирал. Фразетта- грандиозная фигура
That's a very young
James Gurney as one of the backgroung artists. ♥
And the man to his right is another equally famous artist - the late Tom Kinkade.
Nice wow! Thumbs up from Ireland ! :)
Thanks
thank you for this!! Wow!!
You're welcome
Fanfuckingtastic!!!
Invaluable, thanks for sharing. You are right about the historical value. Maybe archive.org would be more welcoming of your videos?
great find...thanks for sharing.
Thanks
I would rather look at this old realistic animated masterpiece, than this artificial 3-D animation nowadays anytime...
What is the name of the actress played Teegra?
Cynthia Leake

"continuity and control" it did not have that
Great stuff but tedious as fuck!
Very inefficient technique.
And what technique would have been more efficient in 1980?
@@thereturningshadow I'm not a filmmaker but I guess Disney used a different approach
@@Хомяк99ЛВЛ Disney used hand drawing also, just not rotoscoped for more realistic movement like what was done here.
