I have been a fan of Fire & Ice for many decades. I can't believe it took 8 years for youtube to suggest this to me. It was a great watch. I loved seeing some of the process of creating the film.

Well done everyone, and the result shows!

The volume of work for this is unreal, it really makes you appreciate the content even more. I watched the making of heavy metal once. There’s a scene in the Taarna sequence, where she flies over a landscape. They literally sculpted a 20 foot mini landscape and filmed it to create the effect in animation.

This was a gem of a find. Fire and Ice was one of my favorite cult fantasy films. It was truly ahead of it's time in a number of ways evidenced in this video. I think I'll go watch it again...

Just a heads up for those unfamiliar with animation. Rotoscoping is a hell of a lot faster than traditional hand drawn animation. Bakshi often struggled to fund his projects and cut costs in incredibly clever ways. The incorporation of actual Nazi propaganda into the movie Wizards is an excellent example of this.

I have never seen animation modeled over live action. That looks incredible!

    • @BrottenGuy
      @BrottenGuy День назад +1

It’s how Bakshi did a lot of his films. He did a Lord of the Rings & Hobbit rendition doing this. When I was a kid, that was THE Lord of the Rings rendition, to watch. Peter Jackson’s didn’t come out till I was in college.
But, yeah. Ralph Bakshi did a lot of these. I want to say Heavy Metal was done similar to Rotoscoping. I could be wrong.

Million thanks to the photographer & cartoonist.
    This was made in 1980's.
Performance capture - cartoon film. Wow it's handmade. - special.
Think Avatar was released in 2009.
With same concept but it was made in computer.
Compare you find animals in Avatar is toys. The horses or zeebras. When it's runs in the ground.

Just a reminder for those who (for whatever reason) dislike rotoscope animation, cgi is basically a digital version of that in many ways. Especially for videogames. We all start somewhere.

Not all CGI can be compared to rotoscoping, only mocap. There is a lot of keyframe animation in CGI that is done manually/intuitively.

The rotoscoping worked well in this instance and fit the realist barbarian genre. Let's not forget that even Disney used to rotoscope quite a few of their animation sequences.

Such a refined process, that took so long to create…that we’ve now mostly lost, with computer graphics making animation easier & faster.
Still miss the hand-worked stuff a lot. Added character. Ti the films. Even in bigger blockbuster life-action movies, with things like Tron. Felt like there was more imagination, creativity, & just an overall sense of wonderment back then.

@@thereturningshadow Disney did some rotoscoping with older movies like Snow white! I LOVE how Bakshi does it. It definitely is a lot of work but for the realism//dark fantasy look of the comics in this style of Frank Frazetta, it fits in perfectly for this movie.

    • @madjidchouarbi3921

Канал По сути .Disney used to film EVERY single piece of action involving realistic humans since snow white. If you don't believe me, just make a search on you tube and you'll see that most of the time, the only difference is the stylisation of the character design.
