    I am not a watch enthusiast. A year ago, while randomly browsing youtube videos, I was introduced to Grand Seiko's Spring Drive technology. I was instantly captivated (I am an engineering sort of guy). I told myself I must have a Spring Drive watch because of it's unique engineering (and also its sublime beauty). A few weeks later, I became the proud owner of a GS SBGA373G - champagne dial, blued second hand, Spring Drive. Today it frequently adorns my wrist, even just going to the supermarket.

  • @ShiroKage009
    @ShiroKage009 4 года назад

    There's no frequency to the ticking. This watch doesn't tick. It's a magnetic break regulated by the quartz crystal, which means the hand sweeps analogously. Almost like an infinite number of beats part hour.
    Also, this movement will beat any movement designed with a traditional escapement.

  • @BoronAlloy
    @BoronAlloy 4 года назад +4

    Points of order:
    The seconds hand sweep is as smooth as it is due to the glide wheel braking mechanism. The hand is not being stopped and released multiple times per second, as per a typical escapement, so there’s no frequency for you to imagine at 8:25 - although you seem to understand this by the time you’re explaining the way Spring Drive operates.
    High Intensity Titanium is Seiko’s proprietary version of Grade 5 Titanium Alloy - such that it has an appearance similar to steel, rather than the more usual darker hue associated with the material. The hardness is unchanged, so it’s no more harder to scratch than “generic” Grade 5 Ti6Al4V used by Omega, etc.
    Point to note… there are Swiss patents for such a technology back in the very early 70’s, but needless to say, it never went anywhere, and it was Seiko who persisted for 21 years, before finally making it a commercially viable reality.
    Piaget released their version a few years back, in the shape of the Emperador Coussin XL 700P - a snip at £65K, iirc, although limited to 118 pieces in total.

    I bought Presage Sarx055 for my dad birthday last year and man oh man the dials are really gorgeous and the polishing is so good it looks like theres no crystal at all on the watch, and when the dial catch a light you can mirror your self from it. Really worth the money!!

    I live in Japan, and walk past the Grand Seiko boutique most days. It is truly stunning to see a collection where there are no 'dud' watches, or even minor design misses. I want every watch in the place! The snowflake is awesome (and gorgeous when seen in person), ditto the new "Autumn" SBGH269 model in the front window of the boutique.

    Has Seiko beat the Swiss? Their watches are more accurate, better finished and more affordable. They not only beat them, they scored a Hattrick while doing so.

    • @benzekat7581

      Depends what you aim at - if you speak horlogery they beat ROLEX for sure (obviously if you consider Rolex is Swiss), if you think "+/- seconds/day" probably too. Now if you look at masterpieces they all came from France and Germany, historically, the Swiss started to reign after these two countries lost shine and business in horlogery - now when you look at the Holy Trinity, this is no longer only horlogery it's art but it's overpriced over-everthing, over-technical, beyond reason and "unafforable" - affordable Swiss manufacturers are key and the most impressive one is probably JLC but there are so many other excellent manufacturers here, like IWC, Glashutte, and less afforable like A. Lange Sohne, FP Journe - interestingly Japan has its own (different) way to measure time before they open to the rest of the world, and this is very interesting to see from where Seiko (in particular) comes and how they became leaders in less that half a century...

      When I initially saw the notification, I thought you’d got another G-Shock and realised what you’d gone for when I played it. Marc Goldberg got a Diver in the summer and it was ugly and cheap. The watches have been primarily promoted by who you later reveal invited you; who are highly commercial and by their employee for whom the brand must be his pension plan. You redeemed yourself when you highlighted the shoddy packaging and cheap clasp. You gave what must be a good explanation being some type of engineer of what Spring Drive is. I have the impression you initially had about what they are. I get the impression the gimmicky pseudo Samurai sword polishing is just that. You got the invitation as a top watch channel with a large following from what should be a neutral major watch authority but is actually highly commercial. It is good your channel having it for diversity, but from watching the Diver on the other channel and this: I would never get one. I would have put the money towards a Blancpain or Breguet or a Hublot which are a budget Richard Mille, which I like the look of and hope they are well made now; better than they once were.

      icalexander No, SpringDrive does NOT have a beat, at all. It is completely continuous. Do your research first. It is NOT a quartz watch in the common sense in that there is no motor. All the quartz oscillator does is measure the rate at which the drive occurs, and applies a magnetic brake to the system to slow it down to the perfect rate. It’s as though you’ve missed the whole point of SpringDrive design.
      Please stop making assumptions.

Sent them the smallest brass screw ever made, that was barely visible to the naked eye, with a note saying: you can try and copy our watches, but you will never replicate the intricate engineering we have achieved. A couple of days later a letter arrived back from Seiko. Enclosed was the screw, it had been drilled and tapped through the middle.
