  • Tungsten cable is a complex material to work with when producing mechanical cable for surgical robots. For one, tungsten (Wolfram) is a lazy material when in wire filament form. It lays lazy or "dead" in one's hand, and thus is prone to fraying and bird caging very easily if not handled properly.
So, while tungsten cable can make its way around tight radii easier than stainless steel alternatives, it also requires special considerations when terminating the tungsten cable ends and handling in general.
The wires that comprise tungsten cable for surgical robots is smaller than 1/3 the diameter of a piece of paper, which adds to the engineering challenges manufacturing mechanical cable from tungsten.
