Tungsten has become the preferred material in the manufacture of mechanical cable for surgical robots. A surgical robot uses "joystick" controllers that the surgeon holds in his/her hands to manipulate the robot's appendages, as if they were the surgeon's very shoulders, arms, elbows, hands and fingers.
A surgical robot requires ultrafine tungsten cables to make extremely tight radii, around pulleys as small as 2 millimeters in diameter, which is about the diameter of the tip of a child's crayon. What's more, the tungsten cables used in these fascinating surgical machines must also tolerate the strength demands and cycle counts in the thousands to ensure no risk of failure exists while the surgeon performs fragile procedures.
Surgical robotics mechanical cable can be manufactured in a wide assortment of filament constructions and diameters, and may use wire that is as small as 1/3 the size of a single human hair.
