Just now received the Meike f1.8 from Aliexpress which cost me 185$. The auto focus on the lens isn't as noisy as it sounds in the video. Unfortunately the minimum focusing distance on my lens is 1 meter instead of 0.85 meters. The auto focus is slow but i have always preferred manual focus which gives me much more control over the lens. I own the Canon 80D which is an APS-C format.
Great price for such an impressive 85mm lens! A shame about the autofocus (maybe not the best lens for wedding ceremonies because of the noise) but never the less, a great, sharp option! Thanks for the video Christopher!
Thanks for the review. One thing I’ve never seen mentioned in reviews - so it may or may not be particular to my copy of the lens - is that when shooting with Electronic First Curtain Shutter turned on, there is a gradient shadow (in horizontal orientation) in the top 1/4-1/3 of the frame, increasingly so, at speeds 1/1000 and higher. This is exacerbated by smaller apertures, as well. This does not occur with full-mechanical shutter, nor with full-electronic shutter. A consolation: if shooting outdoors at wide apertures (and therefore faster speeds), it’s best to shoot with full-mechanical shutter, since EFCS causes “bokeh” to look choppy or distorted.
To those using meike 85mm f1.8 - there is an update on their website, the newer stm version and this older version for canon mount are compatible. just connect the lens with a cable (it is seen as a disk on your pc) and just copy the file to the lens as you normally copy files to disks Edit: what the update did for me: no focus shift any more. Before, the lens would need +4 correction to focus stopped down and +13 wide open. nearby targets would need less correction, targets at infinity would need more. Now one single correction of just +1 works at any aperture and any distance. just...wow!!!

I have three 85mm lenses: The Canon f/1.8 , Tamron 85 f/1.8 VC and the Samyang 85 f/1.4. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. The Canon lens have some real problem with longitudinal chromatic abberation, which can ruin many images, and is much more difficult to remove than lateral CA. It also has, on occasion less than perfect bokeh. The Samyang lens is rather horrible in many aspects, but as a portrait lens, it renders images that is appealing to many, because it can create a very dreamy look, and that is, too me, a more important characteristic of a portrait lens. For that reason, I think the test on the AF sound is a bit missleading. In real life, you will not focus repeatedly through the entire focus range, but rather in very small adjustments, in which case the sound will much less distracting. I would be interested in seeing how this lens bokeh, transition between in- and out- of focus areas, longitudinal CA etc. The glimpses we get here suggests that it possibly could do rather well, in which case it is bargain. I think I will be getting one, once they become available.
That Tamron 85mm is actually a first rate lens. It’s sharper than a couple 85mm Zeiss primes in fact. So you saying you’re interested in this would be a bit like owning a new Audi but still checking out beaters on used car lots for a bargain with low mileage. lol
Charles Wu Credit... That’s kind of funny considering this lens is the result of copying a truly uncountable amount of work done by other lens designers and manufacturers. If even the typeface on the box it comes in is lifted off another lens company’s packaging you can’t even imagine what had to be duplicated (creatively, I’m sure) at the fine mechanical level.
Amnother very beautiful review, for which I congratulate you again! The most useful chapters are, of course, the pictures taken and the bokeh, which is great for this lens.
Since this is not a landscape focal length, it's probably going to be used for portraiture. So, with that in mind, since 99% of portraits use a very wide aperture to create a out of focus background (aka the Japanese word: bokeh) it doesn't matter if it's soft in the corners (as long as your subject(s) are not in the corners of the photos). Bam! That makes the softness irrelevant. However, I did see some CA in the corners (even though you didn't) at f/1.8 and that would be bad. In fact I'd have to see some other (measured data) tests on the CA before I'd consider it. Good review. I like the comparison chart at the end. Thanks.
Hi Christ, I am using this with the Viltrox SppedBooster and the Canon EOS M50. I get fast and accurate AF (Liveview and on EVF) despite the pig squeal sound haha. Everything else is has you described. Since i'm using it with a SpeedBooster I gain a stop of light up to F1.2 .

this was an awesome video, and I really like how you compared the lens sharpness, that was really helpful, def will be back to check out some more of your videos.
I've bought it, tested it and it's great on my 7d! However, it needed +13 microadjustment. Once dialed in, autofocus accuracy is roughly over 90%. By f2.2 the lens is almost perfect for my style of shooting. Canon 85mm f1.8 is optically worse to my taste (too many aberrations because of old design, monstrous purple fringing, etc.)
@@pauloferreiraart some Canon cameras have AF microadjustment in their Custom Functions. Some, but far from all. My 7d does have it. The cheapest cropped option that has it is Canon 50d, and the cheapest full frame camera that has it is canon 5d mk. ii.
Those goblin growls would cause many a model to show you heels in quick succession. Would take considerable diplomatic prowess and uncanny talent of persuasion to get them to continue posing once they've captured and dragged back to the location. A very special lens, indeed. To say it's noisy would be to grossly understate its ability to shock an unsuspecting model into flight.
How did you mount the lens on your Sony bodies? Using MC-11 or other adapter? For autofocus part of your Canon lens reviews it would be nice have few words about how well they work adapted on Sony. Thanx for the great reviews...

Hi Chris. I've seen a ton of your video reviews (and used many as a basis for further purchase) and it's even better to see lots of pictures of Wales. My point, though, is that many EF lenses become an awful lot more versatile and better performing when connected to a later Digic version Canon using a speedbooster rather than a straight adapter. Not only do you get the x.71 crop and an extra f stop, you frequently get a much punchier performance from a lens. I've got an M50 (and this is why I have an M50) and whatever I'll be doing I'll be taking both speedbooster and the commlite straight adapter, guaranteed. One thing I've noticed, so far, with my lenses is that the f stop drop with the speedbooster only seems to work on native Canon lenses. I just thought you might want to bear some of this in mind with future lens reviews - a duff lens might shine in a slightly different context.

Hi Christopher! I hope you can help me. I try this lens in a AS7II and the body detects it automatically like a APSC one. When I manually turn off the crop factor appears a bad distortion on the edges of the image. I suppose something works wrong, but I try with another new one and the same issue appears. Is like a glass reflect. I think that a full frame lens should works fine in 35mm mode. What would be wrong with it?
Hi Chris, What adapter do you use for your sony cameras? Did it communicate / autofocus fine on them or not? It'd be good to know how the lenses you review communicate with your Sony A7Rii.
Thanks Chris. I'm using a viltrox mkiv I'm just deciding which 85mm to get but knowing which one will work well is a gamble. Love your channel btw. I check it everyday for new content

Image quality on 99% of lenses is normal by the time you get any more than a few feet away from your test subject
Looking for this lens vs Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 EF lens
Quick Question! How is it by now are you experiencing some unexpected troubles in focusing
Please review third party adapter
Nice review :)
I get good pics with this lens. I use it in HS gyms and take pics at basketball games
Thank ye'..

How long didn't I hear a dot matric printer noise?
Hi Chris, What adapter do you use for your sony cameras? Did it communicate / autofocus fine on them or not? It'd be good to know how the lenses you review communicate with your Sony A7Rii.
I generally use the Sigma MC-11. However every lens works differently with every different adaptor TBH
Thanks Chris. I'm using a viltrox mkiv I'm just deciding which 85mm to get but knowing which one will work well is a gamble.
Love your channel btw. I check it everyday for new content
I lost interest when i saw that silver ring, I like it green or blue or maybe red looks better. And its very noisy and slow. They could just come up with a manual f1.4 or f1.2 I believe the production cost is lower.
Does anyone know if auto-focus is working correctly on a Canon m6 mk2 nowadays ?
Please review the new Tamron 70-210 F4 for Canon
