I'm a Perth boy, and I was lucky enough to be there when this Aussie genre was being born and this album first came out. I saw these dudes play the same night with cog, and was standing two metres away from them at The Foundry pub. One of these best nights I've ever had. Before this point, our music all kinda sucked, but then bands like cog and Karnivool all came together and built something new, technical, progressive, and different.

I wouldn't say it necessarily sucked, we had great bands before them like Grinners, bodyjar, frenzel etc but certainly created something great and new. I got to see them in Melbourne before Themata released and remember thinking they were gonna go big. The next time I saw them was with Butterfly Effect, DLC and Cog. Crazy to think it's been around 20 odd years of these bands and they are still providing.

@@johnknight9150 yeah, being in at the start was amazing! This is still the best Vool song. My standout memory is a gig at the Lookout on a steamy hot night where everyone ran down for a midnight swim afterwards. I loved that they (and Birds) did quite a few free gigs in Perth in the earlier days, and are even better live🤘(and yes, agreed on Grinners, etc, lol)

Karnivool is waaayyy before Birds of Tokyo...and they're more of a prog metal band.

Karnivool finished up a tour of Europe earlier this year and look to be back there mid next year. Looks like we are getting a few BoT dates here in Aus for early next year. I do hope Karnivool come home for a few shows as well.

Ian Kenney is still playing with both bands up to this day.

Hard to believe it's been 10 years already since the last Karnivool album. 🕰️🗓️Actually, the release of Themata was concurrent with the first BOT album, 2005. Kenney had been in Karnivool for 8 years already at the time. This was the radio edit of the song.
In 2013 Kenny took both Karnivool and BOT to #1 on the Australian charts, the first to do that. Karnivool's album 'Sound Awake' is considered a Prog Metal masterpiece.

Their early stuff did some heavier, faster tracks. Set Fire to the Hive from this album is fire. A tidbit: For this album, the bass player Jon Stockman wrote and performed both drums and bass for the recording of the entire album. And as far as i understand it, Karnivool came before Birds, but he sang and toured with both simultaneously for years.

Album version of this song is much better. Because a lot of parts were cut in music video

Really appreciate you checking this band out, idk how much you know about it, but they sadly arent around too much these days though still perform shows. They got real talent honeslty nad talent honestly, and Id recommend any of the songs off of Sound Awake or poerhaps C.O.T.E of the same album as Temata. Hope you enjoyed, these guys really mean alot to me personally.

Interesting choice lol of all the amazing Karnivool songs. Karnivool are a lot more prog rock than nu metal. Themata is pre Birds of Tokyo, they haven't released an album in like 10 years but are writing and still tour. I believe Karnivool's first EP was Persona in 1999? I have the cd but can't be bothered checking.

You’ve done the vool before. Ian fronts both. Birds of Tokyo is the money earner. 1 st 3 albums are awesome. The vool have 3 all up. Both great in my rates.

Ian Kenny's facial hair comes and goes lol he will go baby face for a while, then brings on the fluff.
    Yeah not metal. Prog rock.
Something from Sound Awake would've been better. That is an epic album!
