I recently found a seized 403a in a blond cabinet at a local thrift store at a great price. The rotating hook was the problem. Took off the gear and cleaned up the hook spindle and all is good. These are great machines. I now have a nice 403a to go with my 503a and they both use the same fashion discs and attachments. Thanks for posting!
Thank you so much! My mother was a professional seamstress in the 50s-60s and I inherited her Singer 403 sewing machine in a nice hideaway console. I went to hem some pants the other day and, boy it is dry as a bone as I haven't used it in many years. It is a nice machine so I will give it a thorough cleaning. Thank you so much for your informative video!
This was so informative ..... thank you thank you! I have learned so much from your videos. The history of these vintage machines are priceless to me ..... especially the 403A which I have. I love the 403A. It is a workhorse and thanks to all your videos, it's even more valuable to me.
My singer machine zizag stich width dial is not working or too tight to move .Staright stich is working fine .I have adjusted needle hight and timing.Have you made video on this ?What would be the problem ?
Take a look at my 'CLEANING SERIES' videos for info on how to detail/clean the outside of these. I recently made a video cleaning the same paint finish for a Singer 301A in beige.
I enjoy my 403a and it is my primary user, however, when working on heavier materials with thicker seams...my 15-91 has much more piercing power and a nicer stitch.

I have singer 2112 .Have you ever worked with that machine ? I want to open front cover but dont know how to pull the dial on it .
Did we lubricate the hand crank gear? It looks synthetic not actually metal?
Thank you.
