Record breaking:
The Gornergrat station is the highest, open-air railway station in Europe. The cog-wheel railway opened for passengers on 20. August 1898 and was the first electrically-powered cog-wheel railway in Switzerland.
As the train travels upwards from Zermatt to the Gornergrat summit it covers an altitude difference of 1,484 metres and stops at several stations on the way. Passengers are free to board or leave the train at these stations, to enjoy this mountain and its nature for hiking, snowshoe tours or winter hiking.

Riffelalp: 2'211 m
Riffelboden: 2'348 m
Riffelberg: 2'582 m

Technical facts about the Gornergrat Railway:
The Gornergrat Railway was the first electrically-powered cog-wheel railway to be opened in Switzerland.
Route length: 9,339 km totally by cog wheel (Abt system) / dual track 3,790 km
Steepest slope: 200 ‰ (on average 160 ‰)
Electrification: 725 volt three-phase current, electrical traction since opening on 20.08.1898
Speed Uphill: maximum 30 km/h
Speed Downhill: maximum 20-27 km/h
Since the opening in 1898, energy has been recovered on the downhill run by means of recuperation.
Transport capacity:
Depending on the season, the trains run up to the summit every 24 to 48 minutes. Each train holds 2,511 passengers per hour. Due to the Coronavirus situation the available seating has been reduced so that the trains are currently only running with 50% capacity.

When our last holiday to switzerland ,we wer based in Hotel in "GRINDLEWALD" and we did the Rail Journey to Jungfraujoch and to the Bond Building also matterhorn,and we enjoyed so much and memories to this day.But soon after our holiday in 2009 ,our son died from Cancer , then due to severe depression ,i retired from employement and moved to our home here on isle of wight.Then in 2020 i had a stroke ,and now awaiting a major surgical operation,and so no longer a passport,and to ill to travel .i look ar these lovely films of switzerland /bernes oberland and will remain im my memory forever,so thankyou switzerland and many happy memories.But i will keep on watching great films of that lovely switzerland.Thankyou

I don't know which is more amazing; the scenery of the civil engineering of these Swiss electric rack railroads. Beautiful video.
On the trip I made, Zermatt was blanketed in misty rain. I was hesitant about the worthwhileness of going up, but did go. The mist became cloud, and no sign of Matterhorn. About halfway up, we suddenly came out of the cloud and there was Matterhorn - sunlit and breathtaking. The view from the top was glorious. Going down was just the reverse experience, into cloud and light rain at Zermatt.

@@budhiprasetyo4583 Thanks ! you don't know but i did this train ride 2 times first time i forgot the set my camera to 8K lost so i lost 100 euro on the train ride . . . i record it in 4K 24P !!! OMG i was so mad about my self how how how . . ( that 4K train ride has the best weather of both train rides but unwatchable full of jitters because of the wrong settings ) sometimes you have one of these days ;)

I shot the video twice throughout the day, and then I found that the dust got on the sensor. I didn't lose 100 euro, but I lost rare sunny days in St. Petersburg...
Just took this train ride in September and then hiked down the trail with my wife. What a beautiful hike it was! Zermatt is such a cool village to stay in for several days. Cool people, great restaurants and so much to do.

What a breathtaking and majestic view! My lifetime dream has always been to visits Switzerland, unfortunately I'm afraid to fly but at least watching these videos I can still appreciate the beauty there!

I encourage you to accomplish one of the most significant thigs you'll ever do in life...learn to be free from the fear of flying! Then go to Switzerland! Einer der beeindruckendsten Locations, wo ich bisher war. Als 18-jähriger in der JuHe in Winkelmatten, Ankunft Abends bei Nebel, am nächsten Morgen das Matterhorn formatfüllend im Zimmerfenster. Wahnsinn!! Wir sind allerdings hochgelaufen und haben die für uns damals teure Bahn nicht genutzt.
Ja, leider sind alle Bergbahnen sehr kostspielig, aber super schön.

The Zermatt area looks a lot more touristy than I thought it would. Seems like wherever you hike there's always a gondola or a train in view.

Thank you for a superb video. The Gornergratbahn is in my view the most beautiful rack line in the Alps. It is far better than the Jungfraubahn, which is mostly in tunnel. The Gornergrat itself is much more spectacular than the Jungfraujoch, The view from the summit is 360". Oh!, and I nearly forgot - the Gornergrat ride is MUCH cheaper!

Ich habe zu meinem 70isten Geburtstag eine Fahrt mit dem Glacier Express geschenkt bekommen es war auch eine Fahrt nach Zermatt dabei. leider konnten meine Frau und ich aus gesundheitlichen Gründen auf den Gornergrat fahren. ich persönlich wäre gerne hoch gefahren. Allen denen die für mich gesammelt haben möchte ich mich auf diesem Weg noch einmal bedanken, das ich diese wunderbare fahrt machen durfte.

One for the anoraks. This is a very rare three phase railway. Note the two overhead wires and two pantographs on the train. When we went up a few years ago we also had beautiful weather and could see the Matterhorn without any cloud cover.

And the entire region is in 3D VR in Google Earth VR. There was snow on the ground when they shot it. It is also all in 3D in the new Microsoft Flight Simulator. Climbing the Matterhorn in VR is extremely exciting when combined with all the 360 degree photos which can also be viewed inside the headset. All the cliff side rest stops are there as well.
