    You have a great talent at addressing the subtle yet crucial knowledge that is often overlooked. It’s the “in between” that is a grey area of so much of jiu jitsu. Nearly all of your videos address at least a few concepts that specifically apply to me or will improve my understanding of the game. I’m looking forward to more videos in the future. Thank you

    Great as always. The more conceptual videos, the better. Concepts stick better for me than trying to remember different techniques in the moment. Any good drill scenarios that we can work outside of class with partners for retaining guard and effectively managing the range battles will be helpful. Stuff that we can hit hard with repetitions in conjunction to the concepts. Different shrimp recoveries or when to go semi-inverted. I would also love to see your take on some half guard details, the way you addressed it with side control and the others. More so from the guard players position. At the moment I only find myself in half guard when everything is going wrong and my ability to maintain it or recover range and tide of battle from there is awful. It's usually a short amount of time before a knee slice pass or they remove their leg in some other way. I recently saw a clip on some half guard mistakes like not keeping your body close enough and being too flat. Love to get your take on that position at some point. Appreciate all this work a lot, hope you are benefiting from the instruction side as well. I always found teaching things to be the best way to improve stuff you are already great at.

    Really great stuff. As someone working towards their purple belt, conceptual videos like this are great at helping connect positions and making sure I know what questions to ask my professors. I think a conceptual video regarding passing would be fun as well.

    These are awesome, thank you. One thing that I think would be really cool is if you analyzed some competition or rolling footage of lower belts and point out where they are not applying the concepts. There are a lot of details that become automatic and aren't always articulated by higher belts. For instance, people keep passing by getting my leg extended (my right leg if they are passing to the right) and I can't figure out how to prevent that once they get the knee grip and I'm not sure what details and adjustments higher belts make to prevent that.

      Modus my next video will be a guard retention video (Mid range defense), followed by a passing conceptual video, then I will start getting back into some technique details on specific passes. Also I think some video breakdowns of people rolling will be coming in the near future too.

    Wow these are awesome videos. You get to the point fast and it's content with a lot of principles, not over technical stuff that is beside the point of the video. I'll show your channel to my fellow students.

    Great videos! and thank you for your time for making these! Could you go over some of the options on what to do when someone is in your closed guard and is trying to escape (and has there elbows tucked in tight)? Thanks!

    Outstanding video, great concepts and well communicated. I struggle a lot in the mid range battle, it really takes time to develop the efficiency of movement in open guard, there are so many variations of passes, you really need to be sharp and precise with all four limbs all the time.

    I think this video has come the closest to hitting upon my particular weaknesses and issues. What's interesting is that Danaher has just come out with a pin escapes video a year after you were first mentioning it here. Also his next one on guard retention is about to hit. I will buy them of course, but I have to give you props for being early to share this info. Thank you.

    Hey! great videos so far, man. Would you mind making a video explaining different ways to actually "establish" a guard while playing open guard? Basically getting your grips and getting in a good position.
    I sometimes find it challenging when I'm sitting on my butt and my opponent is standing in front of me, to get into for example DLR or spider or whatever. Going from no contact to control.

    Hey John. It's been a while since I've seen you, but I'm glad to see your techniques frequently posted on Reddit. I remember you teaching the details of your triangle, which I imagine have evolved. What do you think about a video talking about entries, and small details to finish the triangle?

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 лет назад

      Ian Hey thanks for the compliments, I will definitely go into my details on finishing the triangle. For set ups I usually focus on a specific position when I teach. Showing multiple triangle entries can be confusing as they may come from separate positions, like one from spider closed and dlr for example. This can be confusing as there can be so many different details off from each separate guard. I can at some point do kind of a demo of a mix of different set ups just a a teaser for more in depth videos. I’m going to do a video soon on my method of positional theory and I think that will help a lot with your question. Thanks for the feedback Ian!

    Fantastic stuff. Not taught at all in the schools I train and trained at. No wonder it takes 10 years to get a black belt in bjj. No wonder there are purple, brown and even a few black belts who get their guards passed by lower belts.

    Jonathon, who taught you these concepts? I have been training since 1997 with umpteen different instructors and none of them have shared anything like this even in private lessons. Kudos to you and other instructors like Jason Scully who unselfishly share what should be taught to bjj students.

    Awesome concepts!
    Why do you put the far elbow on the floor? So you stay flat and protect your back or something else?

    • @privatename6128
      @privatename6128 6 лет назад +1

      I imagine it protects him from having his legs and body thrown to that side.

    • @JonThomasBJJ
      @JonThomasBJJ  6 лет назад

      Yeah the elbow on floor acts as a frame to stop your hip from getting turned away. You can also use your elbow on floor with hand framed on your own hip to block even more. I’m going to film and post a video on this topic today. Thanks for the questions.
