    My routine:
    1.Wake up 10 minutes late.
2.Stay in bed for a few minutes.
3.Sit up, and blankly stare at a wall. Do for 20 minutes.
    4.Put on clothes.
    5.Groom my hair.
6.Skip breakfast, that stuff is overrated.
    7.Regret about my routine later.
    8.Repeat.

I'm finding that the Art of Manliness is really just the art of being a well-adjusted and productive adult. I'm biologically female, and I wake up at 5AM, lift weights and enjoy a strenuous work-out, take a cold shower, eat breakfast, and get to work by 7AM every morning. Brett has inspired me to try waking up even earlier so I can get this fantasy novel of mine finally finished.
    Thanks, friend! Stay manly.

This is actually very true. Your initial thoughts the moment you wake up sets the tempo for the rest of your day. When I wake up, I do push ups, and I shout I'm healthy, I'm happy, and it's great to be alive, over and over to psych myself up.

I have to be at work at 11am. I rise around 8am & shower. I iron or steam my clothes the night before so the morning goes smooth. Then I put on my clothes & make sure I look correct for work. I'm a morning person, so I make some coffee or grab an energy drink as I listen to mostly oldies or R&B music. I head to work around 10:30. I need to start making time for a morning jog or some kind of workout. Cheers, gentlemen!

I sleep in every day, spend my early afternoon doing sports and playing video games, and I sit down to work around 7 p.m., but it's only around midnight, when everyone is fast asleep and the world around me is silent that I really catch wind. I get a massive intellectual and creativity boost during nigh time. But I'm a freelancer.

    Routine:
8AM Wake up, every 3 days 7:50 in time to shave (I don't need to shave every day)
Use bathroom, shower, shave if necessary
    Eat (Mmm)
    Brush teeth
    Change into proper clothing
Make sure personal belongings are in check
Usually doable in 15-20 minutes because it becomes like clockwork.

Getting up that early is touuuuugh. But for anyone either not convinced or too scared to try, get thee to a cold shower. Hot water may feel nice, but that cold water hitting your face and running down your back will wake you up like a foghorn.

I'd like to personal thank everyone over at Art of Manliness for this video and the article regarding the bookends of our day. It's only been two days that I've been waking up before the rise of the sun and doing my morning ritual, and I already feel so much better. Getting up before the sun gets up sort of feels natural, so maybe it's how my circadian rhythm was meant to be. Everything from the exercise, to the cold shower, to planning my day before my day even started, and even having that extra time to get important things done has benefited me greatly. I don't believe I will ever return to sleeping in until 7:30.

      Art of Manliness
1 I did not manage to get up before sunrise.
2 Did some push-ups and took a 30 minute walk. I have to say it is very refreshing to do some excercise because in the morning I do not have a lot of energy and I feel bit grumpy. I began the day positive thinking I would do a lot of things done.
3 The water is pretty cold in the Netherlands and it was so cold the water felt hot. I pushed through it and showered in ice cold water. The thing is because it's cold you have to choice but to keep your body moving and you will start breathing very fast and deep. I usually take a 10 min warm shower, I was done within 3 minutes. Man, did I wake up, all fatigue was gone in an instance.
4 Wanted to shave my beard but that wouldn't be manly.
5 Set up a plan to tasks to accomplish for the day.
6 Well, I did have a big breakfast after the excercise and cold shower. Bye, bye, extra calories burned by the effort I put in.( I'm in pretty good shape, so I allowed myself to eat a bit bigger). I may be me but that very big breakfast made me a bit slower because of all the energy that is required to process that food and the leptin that is released when I eat carbs.
7 I went out to get them and got all task done by 3 pm. After that I got depressed because I had the whole day left to achieve other things . I realised that my productivity was very low while it could be much much higher only if I had a game plan. So I watched some other videos of you and decided that I was going to spend some hours reading. I'm the type of person that purchases quit a portion of books reads 10-15% and never finishes them. I read about 4 hours and than got tired, my concentration was not enough to keep up with the level of the book. I thought about watching tv but realised that it was a waist of time. So I went for another walk to think about what I had done and my plans for the future. And, I got back with you in time I usually keep procrastinating. One bad things about those cold showers is that my body is hot all day long. I can't wear anything but a shirt or else I get too warm. Added benefit is the gentleman downstairs got a good power-up.
Thanks for the tips, I will continue to use them. I'm going to bed early so I can achieve point one tommorrow. May the sun never catch me sleeping.

I can't recommend cold showers enough, when you've gotten over the initial discomfort it is SO refreshing and fills your body with energy. You gotta find the easiest way to get into it for you. For me, I usually make one body part get used to the cold at a time. I quickly rinse one leg with cold water, then another, then an arm, then the other arm, then my body, then head. The first one will be hardest, the ones afterwards won't be so bad, and the rest of the shower is a breeze. You may not feel the positive effects first time you try it, but keep taking showers and it'll come to you. Also, it doesn't need to be like ice water. I like my water somewhat below room temperature.

    • @slowmonet
      @slowmonet 10 лет назад

Start sleeping earlier, think of it like investing time into the next day. You can achieve that by staying away from all electronic devices for about 30 minutes before you lie down (read a book, for example). You'll most likely feel much more relaxed and ready to sleep. Then you can start that 30-minute routine a bit earlier each day, and suddenly you'll start to actually have time to get things done in the early morning just like the video!

I need help AoM gentlemen. I wake up at 6:15 in the morning, and I get out to the road at 6:45 to be at college near 7:40. But when the day reach around 10:00 in the morning I feel absolutely asleep. Also, I don´t feel productive at class; and then all the feel of being tired goes until I arrive home, when I usually need to take a nap and then I just spoil my day.
I think that the fault is on the fact that my breakfast consist of one fruit, water and a Soya yoghurt, but I'm trying to loose weight because I am at 97kg and I should be at 85 or so... I would like to be a true man, being strong, intelligent and confident, and also, lose weight.
The problem with me is that I can't find a routine, some weeks I just kill myself at the gym and lose like 2-3kg and others I just lay like a otter at my chair, pretending to study and work.
Overall (and sorry for this long, no-cohexionated message) I need motivation and energy to be successful at my career and with my health objectives. So I request your help, gentlemen.

This video on being an early riser might have some tips: www.artofmanliness.com/2014/03/29/how-to-become-an-early-riser-video/
Overall, I think having as much stuff ready the night before can really help you out. Shower, shave, set the clothes out, prep breakfast all the night before. That way you don't have to be in such a rush in the morning and you'll have time to do other things like read or do a quick body weight routine.

I'm imagining AoM on mainstream TV.
Mr Brett McKay could be the male version of the Martha Stewart media empire in waiting for guys.
