Hello Dobby & Doppler [ Heavy Metal Truckers ] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome BACK to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol "

Doppler here, we appreciate the comment. I've been a Nightwish fan for over 20 years, so I'm very familiar with the bands history. Dobby(now know as Pincushion) isn't really a fan per say but I've sucked him in a little bit, lol. He loved the Imaginearum album. There is a reaction/review coming soon of the Song of Myself live video talked about in this video.

@@heavymetaltruckers I confess that I've been listening to Nightwish music consistently for only 8-9 years (although I first heard "Sleeping Sun" on the radio in 2000, but then I wasn't ready.. interesting how certain things in life become significant only when we're ready), but when I found this performance of "Ghost Love Score" from the Wacken concert, it helped me get out of a self-destructive spiral. Their intensely optimistic energy.
I carefully followed your reaction - it was honest, which is worthy of appreciation.
I hope you will come back, there are so many diamonds and pearls in their repertoire. The quality of the composition is unique, as you noted.
You have a new subscriber here, at the beginning of the journey.

That you for the sub. Yeah I discovered them about a year before the Once album came out. Been hooked every since and have loved all three singers they've had. As for other reviews besides the upcoming Song of Myself one, it's definitely a possibility and we will definitely checking out the new tracks and ablum on here once they are released.

Very respectful and constructive review and that's all that counts for a good reaction for me. Music is like food, not everyone loves everything. I personally love Nightwish and Floor but that's me.

I agree with both of you. The classical style focuses much more heavily on sound and the color of the sound not dictation or lyrics. Both Flor’s voice and style enables her to color sounds so they sound classical but her mouth shapes, breath support, and ability to mix her voice gives her great depth & breadth.

Just responding here because I see that the word "dictation" was used twice during the video when the intended word, I'm sure, was "diction", which refers to clarity of speech through the well-formed sounds that make up spoken words (my informal definition). The use has now moved into the "Comments" section, so this is my small attempt to stop further spread 🙂. The comment from Dobby about Floor's diction in the more operatic sections is interesting, because in a reaction video to GLS, one of the really popular voice coaches (I forget which one) observed that Floor's diction is exceptional. Considering Floor's incredible attention to detail in her craft, this makes total sense. Keep listening to NW, Dobby, there are some spectacular songs for you to discover.

Floor can do opera without any problem. However for this song she wanted that it didn't sound to operatic. If you want more she did a reaction on this song herself where she explains why she had made that decision and some more background of it. This video is on her youtube channel.

Interesting review. The musician's perspective is interesting.
As Nightwish music is very diverse, there may be some songs that would be more of interest.
I started with The Greatest Show on Earth at Wembley and got blown away,
so GLS did not grab me right away when I first heard it.
It has grown on me since then. Got to hear both songs live in May 2022.

Pincushion(Formally Dobby) does enjoy some of Nightwish's other music. He loved the Imaginearum ablum and has really liked other songs like Romanticide. We do have a video of Song of Myself coming, as he was a big fan of the ablum version so I should him the live version.

Floor Jansen (the Valkyrie Goddess) stands over 6 feet tall in bare feet, and she's wearing 4 to 5 inch heels here.....Tuomas Holopainen (the metal Mozart) is the keyboardist, co-founder (in 1996), leader, guru, arranger, and producer of 95% of the band's music.....audience was an intimate little gathering of 82,000......as you mentioned, this legendary 15 song show (Showtime, Storytime) is available on both DVD and RUclips....for more Nightwish, follow Gabriel Bardac's suggested list, and you won't go wrong....hello from the Nightwish Army, South Carolina, USA.....

I wouldn’t like to play poker with Dobby. While he was watching I didn’t know if he loved it or hated it!
I definitely think Dobby should listen to a song where Floor sings more in a rock voice. I think he would appreciate her versatility and power.

greetings from Finland🇫🇮. good and interesting response. I like honesty, it creates credibility. I can understand if GSL doesn't work, I personally love the heavier Nightwish. maybe you should try "devil and the deep dark ocean", "you are the empty hope" or "tribal". I know that too and understand that not all people just. like this style of music. that's ok too. we are different and that is the richness of life. however, I love this music myself❤️‍🔥🤟

Floor's diction (not "dictation") is as good as it gets - just give a listen to "Shoemaker". The issue might be that long, long vowels (particularly prominent in GLS) do make it hard to follow the lyrics. This is true of any number of operatic arias, Gregorian chants, and other vocal categories where you're expected to know the lyrics, sit back, and enjoy the sonic experience.
Check out "Floor Jansen - O Mio Babbino Caro" to hear how different her operatic singing is from "Nightwish mode".

    • @heavymetaltruckers
      @heavymetaltruckers  4 месяца назад +1

Yeah, it's due to the Operatic style. What Dobby(now Pincushin) said wasn't a knock on Floor at all, it was about the singing style. For someone like him who doesn't know the lyrics, I can see how it may be hard to hear what's being sung. For someone like me who does know the lyrics I can hear them clear as day, lol.

There are songs where Floor does a crisp job of enunciation. The lyrics in GLS are not profound by any means. I think the sound is what they were aiming for, not making understandable lyrics. When a syllable is stretched out over several seconds it is obvious that enunciation and understandability are the focus.
You gentlemen are experienced in metal and are thoughtful. Your reaction came across as genuine.

👍Good review guys but😁,it's a bit funny Dobby has a "issue"with dictation,i see his T-shirt ."lamb of god", they use a lot of "growling/grunting"and live i can't also not hear a lot of dictation with that style of singing,it's maby a good observation but a lot of metal bands ,especcially live, have the same "problem".well,if you considder it a problem.
( you could considder opera the opposit of growling /grunting,but both not not very articulate)
The difficult parts in Nightwish songs are mostly the very well written orchestral (symphonic) parts and in some songs the difficult lyrics wich Floor is mastering very well.
I don't like opera that much and Tarja is a well trained singer but i don't like her style, for me ,Floor is the better fit.Wich brings me to this reaction. No problem at all to have criticism or not liking some songs/parts ,we all have our preferences but,if people can explain why or what is not working for them and have a reasonable and honest way to express that,i welcome that.😉🤘

Doppler here, there are definitely harsh vocalists who have issues with dictation and can be hard to understand. For me, being able to understand a harsh vocalists is very important if I'm going to continue to listen to a band that uses harsh vocals. Randy from Lamb of God is actually one who is quite easy to understand, although I'm not a huge fan of theirs myself.

Well 4 reasons for that, we are as much a review channel as we are a reaction channel, we have not and will never fake reactions for views or subs, I (Doppler) am extremely familiar with Nightwish as I've been a fan for 20+ years, therefore you're not going to get much of a reaction from me since, as I've said in the video, I've seen this more times than I can count. Last reason Pin-Cushion is a big opera/classical and knows about Nightwish and their music(in general) so your not going to get a huge crazy reaction/review from him either.
In the end this channel is for us to give us an outlet to discuss, discover and enjoy a genre of music we enjoy as well as giving us something fun to do while on the road. If people want to come along with us then that's great, if not that's great too.
