Another great video for racewalking. Thank you Ian for advancing the sport in a scientific methodology for beginners. Your efforts will pay off in 5 or 10 years! Jesi and Tori will be on the USA National Team for years. Cheers!
I have been doing Fitness Intervals on my walks, walking as fast as I could for 1/2 laps and then a 1/2 lap of recovery. Once I saw your video, I decided to try with the next step at the belly button rather than the parallel gate. It has been a bit tricky, but I am glad I saw this video and expect to make it a regular part of my routine. thanks for the clarity of the description of the technique.
Thank you!!! for the detailed instruction on race walking!!!!!! always wanted to know how but did not realize there was so much detail in the proper way to do so!!!
Ian, in the end of the video, you did the same laugh and hands over your face I do for my daughter. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about racewalking like you demonstrated in the USATF Level 2 coaches education certification course in endurance this past summer. I'm trying to gather as many resources as possible so I can coach proper technique and participate in racewalking myself (age 61, 62 in September). Take care. Kelly
although I can’t stop laughing when I see them walk, it made me wanna do it. I’m Recovering from a heavy knee injury and running of jumping is out of the question. This looks very healthy to me and probably fun with some good music on 😂
Trying to learn to race walk after an injury has made running at a decent pace essentially physiologically impossible for me. Hopeful I can racewalk instead.
So true! One aspect of staying relaxed when trying to maximize speed is for the entire movement to be automatic. Getting the movement from the front of the brain (thinking about how to do each part of a movement) and the back of the brain where it is so ingrained as to occur without thought takes about 6 weeks of initial training; However, more hours of rehearsal will make it more likely that the movement pattern will not breakdown under the stress of exhaustion or competition.
Hi there i tor my cartilage a few years ago and had 2 ops to sort them out. I was a fairly good runner but now it takes 30 mins for a 5k run. I took part in triathlons etc. This year im taking part in another triathlon with a 13 mile run at the end. Im thinking of trying the race walking method for the run section what do you think of the idea. Will it be easy to learn to race walk it seems pretty quick and looks like it may be easier on my knees
This is a good thing to ask your doctor. I can tell you anecdotally that I had cartilage surgery after a running injury and found racewalking caused much less discomfort during rehab. There won't be any racewalk judges on the run section of a Tri, so you can try adopting some parts of racewalk technique. Experiment to find what works for you. It may be some hybrid of running and racewalking. Good luck!
how much training before I can wear a full blue suit with a sonic like helmet, hehe, anybody? heck yeah, appreciate the video, it seems I might be a natural racewalker, still practicing though I'm not fast, but I want to loose weight. do you think race walking burns more calories?
Before commencing a new exercise program, it is a good idea to check with your doctor. Once they give you the OK, you can step outside and start racewalking, although gently working your way up to speed is advisable. I also suggest you include some core work and stretching (especially hamstrings and hip flexors) as part of your weekly routine.
If done correctly, there is less than half as much impact force at heel strike in racewalking compared with running. This shouldto mean less trauma for those with prior knee injuries. I have not seen studies on exact numbers of injuries to the knees, but personal experience and anecdotes from others strongly suggests racewalking is easier on your knees than is running.
Yes you can reach that pace, I have passed the firefighter's pack test in times as low as 33 min for 3 miles. Wore a bike helmet to hold a strap attached to the center of the backpack--takes much of the 40 lb backpack weight off the shoulders, enabling proper movement of the arms for racewalking. Was already an experienced racewalker before using it for the pack test, but nowhere near championship level.
Check with your doctor first; start gently; and yes, there is less impact force at each foot strike in racewalking than running (about half) so it may well be a good choice as a way to work on your cardio-vascular health. Good luck!
If you go uphill when racewalking, swing the arm so the hand stays close to the body and reaches the chin. This extra vertical displacement of the arm will help 'lift' the body between heel strikes.
I have trained wearing weight vests and the hip rotation tends to displace the load from side to side at each step. This caused chaffing. If you try it, I'd would be interested to hear how it works out for you. Good luck!
The force of foot impact in racewalking is less than half the force that occurs in running. This is because the foot is not lifted high off the ground and there is little distance for the body's center of mass to accelerate due to gravity prior to ground contact. If you learn good technique, you will not be causing a major shock wave to pass up the system at heel strike. Good luck with your racewalking. I hope this helps.
Hello Alex. There is no one shoe brand or style that is best for everyone. I recommend you visit a sport shoe store and try on several different shoes. Walk around in the store and find what works for you personally. I don't think my shoe preference would be comfortable for many other people. Good luck with your walking.
The giggles in the end is priceless lol great technique thanks a lot!
I achieved a lot of walk race technique through your explanation. Thank you so much and keep on.
Most under rated sport ever, it's probably one of the most technical. In Italy it's called il bel gioco.

Thanks for the suggestion to avoid the rules! Your demo and explanation make much better sense than the training method I've used.
Such a great how to for beginners video. Thank so much!

For those who can't manage the running impact on knees and back. I guess no excuses with this one. 👍🏻
Let us know how racewalking works out for both of you. Good luck!

You truly explain this so I can understand the technique, so well. ThankYou
Thank you, a USATF Connecticut walk clinic sent me here. Great video
I love professor Ian Whatley teaching right technique
The legs barely leaving the ground + the crossover gait of the legs is actually quite similar to my natural running form!
Thank you for the tips! Can't wait to try race walking in the park. Now all I need are proper shoes. Any recommendations? 😆
The girls finally spoke at the end lol. It was cute that they were quiet during the lesson. Paying close attention 🧐
Great primer. Many thanks!

They're not walking. They're gliding 😤
Beautiful clouds in the sky
good explanation

It always makes me laugh when I hear a coach in any sport say Relax, when they want their pupils to do something which is opposite of relaxation.

4:13 "and then he turned purple" bwahahaha....best part of the video: demonstrates that they have lots of air (and are having fun)
good video sir

Great technique video, thank you!
Thank you. Please share this and let's build a race walking boom.
Very helpfull,thank you
Thank you for pointing the right technique. Can you tell me why my calf tends to stiffen a bit after say 200-300m?
Thanks so much, Prof.
👍
Very educative indeed
Thank you very much sir
Thank you sir

100 hours. Give or take fifty.
Great video. Do we need to do any warmup exercises, stretching leg muscles, hamstring etc ?

I am training to walk in a full marathon next year. I want to keep up with the runners without actually running.
How did your race go? I'm training for my first full marathon for next year in November and I think race walking will be the way to go
Thats cool and so great
Thanks! I hope it is useful to you.

Super teqnics
I live in India I want to start training for walk race for Olympic 2020 what should I do any coaching centre
Is it possible to racewalk at a 13 min per mile pace carrying a backpack weighing perhaps 45 lbs?
Yes you can reach that pace, I have passed the firefighter's pack test in times as low as 33 min for 3 miles. It's called rucking
great video i was walk 1300km in 10 mints after i flow this advice i walked same distance in 7 to 8 mints onle thanks alot mr lan
Good
Please tel me which shoe comfortable to walk stroke people
would this work for partial hip (left side) replacement? Running is out of the question. i would love to do cardio again....

🔥🔥🔥
Very useful
Thanks a lot
is the posture/movement the same for ground that goes upward ?
If you go uphill when racewalking, swing the arm so the hand stays close to the body and reaches the chin. This extra vertical displacement of the arm will help 'lift' the body between heel strikes.
Can race walking form be applied to rucking? Is it possible to maintain this form while carrying a load?
I have trained wearing weight vests and the hip rotation tends to displace the load from side to side at each step. This caused chaffing. If you try it, I'd would be interested to hear how it works out for you. Good luck!
Thanks you
I thought some physical therapists say it’s not good for knees to land on heel so sharply?
The force of foot impact in racewalking is less than half the force that occurs in running. Grate .sir
I wish he lived by me so i could learn :-)
they already know how to walk ! 😜
It’s harder than it looks

That's how I walk when I have to pee really bad, and the bathroom is far away. Not trying to make fun of, just saying. Do all countries do this?
Yes, this is one of the most widely practiced Olympic events because it requires no special equipment.
27 years old me watching to learn how to walk fast
I am a SWD walk athelete
