As you know Madras - derived from 'Madrasapattinam' a tamil fishing village which thrived centuries before the entry of British is certainly not an European or English name. It's a tamil name while chennai derived from 'chennapattnam' is actually a telugu name, chenna means good or fair in telugu while there is no word called chennai in tamil lexicon. A 14th century stone inscription found in Peneeswaramadam, Krishnagiri district clearly states there was a town by name 'Madarasapattinam'' captured by Kampana king. (Just check on the internet). The city name should be reversed back to Madras & correct the historical mistake. Just as Kovai used as an abbreviation for Coimbatore, Madras from 'Madarasapattinam' is not an English name, but tamil. Pls start an online platform for the name change.

People from TN are really not worried about this, I always wonder to see the old structures during the train journey between Park Town and Tiruvanmiyur , there are many good things to learn from western like European countries preserving their monuments and there are some regulations not to built new model structures or even they are not allowed to raise buildings as high as they think very close to monuments. Yes, even inside India, where heritage conservation and promotion is still lacking and non-considered among many, Chennai stand as the least attractive big city - in competition with Bengaluru - in terms of history, architecture and overall heritage. In comparison to Delhi (where same clueless municipality issue is existing), Kolkata (where heritage buildings are crumbling, but still beneficiaries of a huge records and protection masterplan), Mumbai (A World Heritage City center now ! All due to its history, culture, heritage enthusiasts and its citizens).
In Madras, people are dreaming to witness Paris, London or even Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, all these world class metropolises have in common a urban heritage conservation and valorisation programs. People don't understand that conserving these "pazhassu saaman" are in the core of attractiveness policies worldwide. Going to shopping mall or leisure parks aren't exceptional experiences for foreigners. They can do the same and even more better in their countries. In the name of a "cheap" understanding and fantasies around "modernity", "worldclass", many people in India, and notably in Chennai and overall Tamil Nadu, are destroying day by day what paradoxically makes India, Tamil Nadu and Chennai as "India", "Tamil Nadu" and "Chennai" (in the most positive and beautiful aspects) worldwide.
And its not only for the "others", for the "foreigners", its firstly for us ! How can you appreciate and esteem the greatness of the place you live, without witnessing and experiencing footprints of its glorious past ? I think it can be a balm for the "Dunki" mentality that many people have in India nowadays, where people hope to quite and give up passport, not only for livelihood or living standards, but also among some of them, due to the depreciation and low-esteem they have of themselves and their country !

All of the madras buildings had unique adaption of local architecture to bring air flow better. This corridors are key part of building floors. They allow the air circulation and for cooling naturally. Sriram said something that I used to notice, papers fly literally if kept without paper weight. This is not British… this is Chennai Architecture. Indo Saracenic architecture took birth in Chennai. If at all government builds any new building that should be of this architecture., in my mind that should be the last architecture of Tamil.

"Mudaliar" is not a CASTE, read the Tamil's first novel "Prathaba Mudaliar sarithiram".
In AD 1300s after Madurai Sultan Flayed alive the Vijayanagar Kingdom Hoysala King Veera Ballala III, their local TAX collectors called NAICKERS collected money without mercy on Tamil areas, the Same Money collections was done for traditional Tamil Kings (#Kanakku Pillai, or Vellala Pillai) by some people from so called #Vellala Caste.
When Arcot Nawab came these Naickers continued to collect Money, also some Kanakku Pillais continued to collect Money with the Muslim title "Mudaliar (from Musaliar)" or Diwan.
When European colonialists came, they allowed these Diwans as Diwan Bahadurs.. !
Some Naickers opposed #British (like Kattabomman) and destroyed, but MUDALIARS NEVER opposed British so when BRITISH go out from India in 1947, British gave the lands owned by British, was given without any COST to their servants like PTR Palanivel Thiyagarajan's grand father PT Rajan.
So in contrast with Telugu Naickers, these #Mudaliars and Nattukottai Chettiyars gave Money to people who speak #Tamil politics like Aringar Anna, Kalaingar M Karunanidhi..!
PTR Palanivel Thiyagarajan said the Indian state governments can borrow Money from global investors by "Mortgaging" the state owned Lands (which is highest in the world) as a Liquidity assets.
