  • I got an email a while back from a subscriber named Rockfarmer. He was curious to see my take on painting horses from the Lord of the Rings Miniature game produced by Games Workshop. He sent me a box to see what I would do with it. This is my take on painting these minis. Thanks again Rockfarmer, these were awesome to paint, and I hope this helps in your quest for better horses!

    Hey Casey. They look great! Just for future reference, black points on the legs of an otherwise brown coat always go with a black mane and tail (bay), if you do the same with a cream/gold coat, you get “dun”. Another great colour is palomino (gold + white mane and tail). Any horse can have white marking on their lower leg or face. :)

      eBay Miniature Rescues No worries, been horse obsessed since I was 2 (according to my parents 🤣). My own is a bay. Horses and miniatures share something in common... both are expensive! LOL

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 года назад

      I grew up in an area where every other neighbor had horses, I’ve always liked them, but most definitely can’t afford them lol. I opted for dirt biking instead, expensive, but not horse expensive.

    • @ninja_cazzle2641
      @ninja_cazzle2641 4 года назад

      Mine was virtually free as he had some “mental issues”. He’s not the cheapest to keep, but I am lucky that mum and dad have a field I can keep him on. Makes it so much cheaper as then just left with feed (costs most in winter), shoes (the biggest cost), vet and dentist. That’s the main costs anyway. Others have a habit of creeping up on you now and then

    Great videos, I know I'm commenting on an old one, but I was looking particularly for how to paint a white horse, so this NAILED my needs. Sadly I don't have an airbrush - any chance we could have a "return to your roots" video for us painters starting out to see what we can achieve with just the basics? Keep it up Casey!

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 года назад +1

      Every so often I do end up using just a brush. I can tell you though that with a little bit of patience you can get the same results with a brush as with an airbrush. The white horses for example. If you want those shadows under the muscles, water down some of that shadow color and layer it under the muscles in really light coats, it takes more time, but after 5 or 6 coats it will really start to show and give you that effect. alternatively, if you prime your horses white, get a brown spray paint and lightly mist them from the bottom, without the bases on so you can get an even shadow. I've been itching to paint more horses lately, so if I get to them I will try and do one of them with just a brush :)

    • @alexcross5916
      @alexcross5916 4 года назад +1

      @@eBayMiniatureRescues thanks so much for this response, very detailed! I'll try this soon as I can, they are primed white, ish, so I'll try to find a spray paint I can use on them from below to try this effect on some, and I'll use the thinned down paint method on others!

    Also any chance for a quick how I based this as a mid-week fix?

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  5 лет назад +3

      Don’t know if I’ll have time for a full on video, but I can tell you pretty quick.
      GW texture Armageddon Dust
      Agrax Earthshade Wash
      Ushabti Bone Drybrush
      PVA Glue for Army Painters Steppe Grass, then a literal sprinkle of 4ground Scrim Foliage Draught Hues
      And finally I super glued army painter grass tufts on.
      I’ll be doing some more lotr stuff in the future, the Mumak to be specific, and I’ll try and do a basing video separate for that one. It’s a huge model! In the meantime I hope this at least helps :)

    Nice tutorial! Do you know how I should attach the horses to the bases... the part on the hoof which goes into the base is round but the hole in the base is hexagonal, if you could let me know it’d be greatly appreciated.
    Keep up the good work! :)

    • @eBayMiniatureRescues
      @eBayMiniatureRescues  4 года назад

      Thanks!! I did find it weird that the holes were hexagonal, I’m assuming there are other minis in the line that use that shape? I just used enough glue to attach one side of the nub to the wall, then when it dried I put glue on the underside of the hole to fill the gap, after you put basing materials down you can’t see it at all. Alternatively, you could use some greenstuff or milliput to fill the hole completely after getting the hoof mostly glued down.

    Since 98% of your videos involve your use of green, I challenge you to paint blues and greys more and mix your pallette up. Grey was the colour I became super comfortable with while neglecting others for learning to blend with and such.

      @eBayMiniatureRescues  5 лет назад +2

      That’s a great idea, I didn’t even realize I was hitting on the green so much! Thanks for the feedback, I needed to hear that.

      @@eBayMiniatureRescues A side bar to this. You'd appreciate this. I won an eBay auction for a Defiler. Paid a good chunk for it. Thr box is damaged a bit. But the best part. It is completely unassembled, all parts are still on the sprue and even came with thr assembly instruction booklet.
      I can't wait to assemble and paint it.
      Any ideas to make it appear more Death Guardy? I'm torn between keeping it as is for my Chaos Marines or modify it for my Death Guard.
