Back in the early 1960's when I was about Griffin's age, my dad bought a 1958 Oldsmobile Fiesta station wagon. It was blue and white, with factory air conditioning, which was rare back then. It was our first car that had A/C, and I loved it. My dad called it the "chromemobile."
Wow. I've never seen a 58 olds wagon in person. I bet it was a sight to behold. A/C?! Y'all we're living large. One of the best parts of doing this is hearing stories like yours. I love it. Every one of these old cars meant something to someone. It's a treat when you get to hear about it. Thanks for watching.
Mr. B. Here ! I had a 1958 Super 88 2 door , over 40 years and still working on it , most folks do not understand what it takes to bring one of these vehicles back . It not a Chevy witch has support , Oldsmobile for it . Good job ! Hope buddy has many good drives with it .
@@theotrmechanic3624 Thank you ! I as a young man I work on Oldsmobiles , also I have 64 Cutlass S convertible, 70 442 convertible, two 76 Cutlasses, 84 Delta rat rod, & last 76 GMC Sprint . Too many toys . Shop manuals for all helps ! The 58 finally got brake system done master , lines, wheel cylinders, and shoes . From what see you did a good job . FYI cam would go bad in 371 that year , let your buddy know .
When I saw your video, I thought, Holy Cow! I've got the exact same car as you have! Same paint color as well, except mine doesn't have the white paint on the top. The name of that paint from the factory is called Desert Glow. We call our car, the Pepto Bismol Special. Great Car! It belonged to my grandfather.
With internet, ebay and such, it's easier now to find parts for a 50's Olds than it was in the 1980's. In the '80's, the only sources were auto parts stores who just laughed whenever I would walk in and ask for a part (I didn't think it was funny)...or Hemmings Motor News, which was priced higher on parts back then than things are nowadays.
There is a specialty shop in Connecticut that I've gotten most things from. The cadillac is almost impossible to get anything for. I've been having to get real creative.
Yeah, to add to the difficulty 58 is a one year only body style. the 371 engine was only made from 57 - 60 and several internal parts are only compatible between 57/58 and then 59/60. Fun times!
@@Freedomquest08 In 1984, I owned a 1960 Cadillac 4 door flattop. I remember it cost me $9 to get an air filter for it at the auto parts store (think it was NAPA).
@@theotrmechanic3624 If you have the old part, or the OEM specs, you may be able to reverse engineer it and make a new part using a 3D printer. I had a 3D shop make a new vacuum part for me awhile back and showed it on a RUclips video ("SmartTech 3D Printing Created Unavailable Part...").
I'm glad that it brings back some memories for you. Most days, my father and son are in the shop with me. I started making videos so that when I'm gone, my son would have them to remember us. Thank you for watching.

Well i guess now i’m just gonna have to subscribe , hope have enough time to watch , that 58 was just a treat to see . Keep up the good work guys !
The paint on your Oldsmobubble is in really nice shape, especially if that is THEE original paint. I think you might have a low mileage specimen there. How many miles on it? That being the case, you might want to grease up your speedo cable being that it is "dancing around." If you are going to drive it, I strongly recommend installing a dual chamber master cylinder. Safety trumps originality. Also it's good that you cleaned the windows not only for safety's sake, but also to set a good example for your son. Outside of that, I like the chemistry you have with your kid!
It shows around 65,000 miles. I'm believe that's original. The paint is 90% original, but has been touched up here and there. It'll be getting a full wash and wax soon. I appreciate you watching!
Have you done an engine repaint too? That bronze block looks CLEAN. Love the name, 'Snowball'. I call mine 'Trouble' ;) Or 'Tea' for short! I'm amazed you didnt name her 'Desert Rose', because like you say, 'One Step Forward, Two Steps Back'.
That would have been good. I thought about calling her Tina in homage to Christine the 58' Fury. I believe cars have personalities, and this ole girl wanted to be left in the grave. While it was apart, I couldn't help but shoot a coat of paint on it. Thanks for watching!
@@theotrmechanic3624 Don't blame you for the paint, I'd planned initially to ratrod the engine in my Edsel, have it running like a barn find, but so much work needed to be done and so much to be stripped I bought some period correct yellow engine paint to restore it to stock. Best laid plans, and all that! My old boy's just grumpy, its like you gotta argue 'I'm trying to help you!" with him to get bolts and parts taken off. Love the name Tina too, heck she's oozing character, gonna be a shame when she goes back to her owner. You ever consider buying one like her when she's gone?
It don't matter what you did with the engine. It ain't their car. Besides sometimes you gotta make do with what ya got. Ain't a thing wrong with that. I'd daily it just how it is. That's a sweet ride 👌
I always thought the '58 olds was ugly as sin, but I like yours. The coral/pink was really popular back in the late 50s. Yours is really straight and complete!
This one isn't for sale, but there will be a few others coming up on the channel. I'm not sure where you are, but I saw a solid looking 1940 on Facebook marketplace in the middle Georgia area recently.
I wish I was around in the 70-80s as a OTR driver. It's a different world nowadays. This car has has been passed down through 3 generations of the family, so it isn't for sale. I do see them on marketplace from time to time though.
The Olds looks great. Family had the same model. Great memories. 🎉

absolutely mint. beautiful car, love that chromed out interior
The '40 La Salle is a real gem ! Feel free to document that !
The Olds is 65 years old. There is bound to be problems. But she looks good, and when running sounds good. Nice job!
A friend in need is a friend indeed! I would like to add a 1958 Oldsmobile to my fleet!
That's right.
Thanks for sharing these cars! I gripe about parts for a '77 Olds, can't imagine 58 would be easier much less a LaSalle!

Curious how it would look with the wheel covers on.
Love the idiot lights. Need some bulbs tho eg., COLD/HOT. Nice it's got Speed alert, yellow pointer.

'57 Olds was a better looking car!
Fix one item..break several others.. typical, join the club!
What's so difficult about building the (carter) quadrajet?
This isn't a carter or a quadrant. It's a rochester 4 jet. Specific to 1958 oldsmobile. It's just different and difficult to get parts for.
Harley Earl was great, but by '58, it was time to go. Bill Mitchell took over and brought GM over the top. Still an awsome car!!
They still looked better than the Ford's in 58. The 60s definitely looked good though.
Harley J. Earl was up for mandatory retirement @ age 65 in 1958.
Why not clean the windshield

How much for the lasalle

Hows the trucking been going, hear rates are poor,
hardly worth the expense of going out
They're horrible. I'm losing money every time I crank the truck these days. But, what do you do.
Before fuel injection, there was patting of the gas.
