Speaking as an animator, I can 100% believe these flubs are all entirely due to being overworked. Especially the one where the ape picks up a Michelangelo but leaves behind a Michelangelo. I've done crap like that before. It's so easy to leave a cell in place when moving other cells.

What I love about number 7 is that it actually looks like Michelangelo is making the car sounds himself. You gotta love unintentional comedy gold.

8:14 - props to James for saying this. That's usually the reason these errors happen, the animators tend to be in such a tight schedule that some errors just can't be fixed before the episode is released.
Yeah, it happens a lot. They mentioned things like this happening in Venture Bros. Commentaries. Though usually they'd catch the errors.
Hopefully none of the animators were too obsessive compulsive to still enjoy the released product.
That sucks and I take it the errors where never fixed for the boxset.
Especially in the days before computer usage was widespread.
And keep in mind, this is back during the days of cel animation, and it was MUCH harder to correct mistakes compared to animating digitally.
I used to laugh at these "mistakes" when I was a kid and watched this show every Saturday morning in the late 80's, early 90's. Thanks for the trip down memory lane 👍👍
FEVER x DREAM hand drawn animation is more prone for errors. 3D/CGI animation makes it more harder to make mistakes.

It happened in many old 80s cartoons. 90s cartoons didn't have those problems for some reason.
I haven't seen enough episodes to remember these errors. But I did see a few major errors in the Transformers animated movie.
Angry Splinter about had me rolling on the floor. WTF is he so pissed off about? It could be anything.

Maybe he just realized that he’s a mutated rat, living with mutated turtles, having to eat weird topping pizza every day...in a sewer! Or he could just not give a rats ass about what’s on TV.
4:29 Another weird thing in this one: In the panning shot, April doesn't seem to be a flat TV image. From this angle it looks like she's actually a tiny person sitting in a box. You can even see her head is partly covering the picture of the man next to her! Compare it to the very next shot where we see the TV head-on.
holy shit that's so right, you don't think about animation perspective errors a lot but this is a prime example.
It's like the Star Trek viewscreens. 😂

that kind of tv, had curved projectors (outwards, flat screens are recent, so are curved inwards screens), although the covering the pic is funny

I couldn't stop laughing at the angry splinter one, I'm even laughing right now writing this.
It's because Shredder farted in that later shot AVG showed us, travelled back in time through Dimension X and then found its way through the TV.
Splinter was about to eat his Sushi, but the smell lingered, it was one of those bellyache kinds, a really bad one.
Can be offensive to some.

You know, me neither. I don't remember when I have laughed so hard and long! The contrast with the turtles sitting right next to him with happy faces is just so bizarre that it's funny.

That kind of reminds me how every turtle was originally wearing the same exact red mask.
How did the animators not catch the biggest mistake in the cartoon series by coloring all three turtles blue? 0:49 😂
I remember this era of the site so fondly. Turtle Tuesdays, Overanalyzers, the start of James and Mike Mondays... good shit.
All of Cinemassacre's stuff is pretty funny, but this takes the cake somehow, might be the surrealism of the mistakes mixed with the goofiness of the turtles and the matter-of-fact commentary from James. That random living skeleton with no explanation is just too funny
The funniest thing is that in the Italian dub they sometimes adlibbed lines that tried to justify some animation errors. Like, the scene at 1:00 where a blindfolded Michelangelo becomes Donatello? The Italian dub made Raphael say something like "Wear Donatello's belt, the D makes you stronger!"
Well, that’s ONE way to duct tape everything back together.
Is that bc Donatello did more damage in the game. 1 block instead of 1/2 like Michelangelo?
They were making like 60 episodes in one batch back then, I never really noticed the mistakes and off model characters until rewatching as an adult.
we were a LOT more forgiving as children. especially considering the level of animation quality back then. this show was pretty much in the mid to upper zone of goodness. Even as a kid i could spot the never ending reuse in a show like heman.
Indeed, and chances are, they were probably under a deadline, which would explain mistakes like missing backgrounds and animations as well as coloring errors.
i do know that sometimes with them having to rush recordings they would make mistakes on which turtle had which line or if the actor was out for even a brief period and their wasnt time they would have someone else fill in temporarily

omg so true! i watched every damn episode of this, but every time i see a clip im always like "they did WHAT???"
Part of it could be we understand things differently as adults than we do as kids so back then some of us may not pick up on everything going on that an older, wiser adult sees such as possible mistakes.

@@johnholliday7042 Nope, I was born mid-80s, I grew up on this version of the show specifically and had a lot of action figures from it and dreamed of someday owning the pizza-shooting van.
Legend has it: they were shortstaffed one day, and got the animators from the super mario bros super show to help out.

I think angry Splinter and farting Shredder might be due to the animators using the figures as models.

I grew up watching this cartoon and had no idea it had so many flubs and mistakes. Also, I just learned literally yesterday that James Avery (the dad from Fresh Prince) voiced Shredder.

I'm very confused, I didn't see a skeleton in that clip but everyone is talking about it like it was there. I saw the weird tiny bear, but where James said there was a skeleton, I just saw a background plate.
Funny enough, I've never noticed these mistakes when I was a kid.

I remember noticing these all the time as a kid. Most specifically turtles speaking in other turtles' voices. I also never understood why on some of the title cards at the begining of ghe show, you see Raph holding Leo's katanas. I never would have picked up the "real" skeleton at the costume parade though. I remember this kind of stuff happening in the Real Ghostbusters too, but not nearly as much. Stuff like one ghostbuster having another ghostbusters jump suit on. Rarely did the voices get switched if ever. Ecto 1 also got trashed, then was fine again moments later. got Entertaining video.

Animation mistakes were common in the late 80s early 90s Garfield and friends had a whole episode on this as a joke.
the budget for that show must've been a couple hundred dollars.

The one where Splinter is totally pissed for reasons that no one knows is the best. He is just there, angry with the world with some bad ideas in his mind
Nice finds. The one that got me most was when they'd miss colour a turtle in the title cards, for example Michelangelo is eating a pizza with his classic expression, but his bandana is blue. Transformers had similar issues as well.
As far as number 13 with Splinter looking angry I can think of a some reasons.
1. One of the turtles pissed him off.
2. He was thinking about Shredder as they were watching the news.
3. He probably saw something on TV that offended him.
4. He was probably in deep concentration until he was interrupted.
Absolutely hilarious! How did I miss these while growing up? You just got yourself another subscriber.

Since Raphael is "the leader of the group", maybe he just wears blue and has completely stolen Leonardo's identity now.

In the 2012 series, when it shows the 80s turtles jumping down to fight the giant worm, you only hear mikey yell "COWABUNGA!" but all the turtles mouths move. I guess they were paying homage to the classic mistakes from this series.
The last one looked like a weird alphabet person parade going on. There's all sorts of animal people and crazy crap goin on

There's so much of this in the show that you could easily make a top 60, maybe even 80
My fave was in the pilot before they enter the Security Services building, two turtles are cloned: Raphael AND Leonardo in the same shot.

That was a great choice of Number 1; "The Fourth Musketurtle" is one of my favourite episodes and I still kind of want to cosplay April in that costume. My explanation as a child was that *it was a prop skeleton held up by unseen hands.* It's still creepy as heck, though!

I always called the red turtle with a sword who appears in some of the episode title cards "Ermac Turtle".

My favorite gaff is when a character on TV, like a news anchor, is angled as if they're looking at the characters watching TV. It makes absolutely no sense. It's in a ton of cartoons, and you see it a lot throughout this entire video.
That is strange. Even some old video games are guilty of this.

Also, the idea of Shredder immediately cropdusting everyone as soon as he gets in the Turtle Van makes him even more of a troll IMO

The pizza in this show always looks _so damn delicious_ because of all that cheese.
I remember sometimes when the turtles blinked their eyelids were the same colour as their mask, and not so much a flub but in the UK a lot of Mikey's scenes with his nunchucks were cut or edited due to nunchucks being deemed too violent for kids TV (oh, but a big sword is ok lol) negativity over ninjas in the British media led to the show getting a name change to Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles in the UK.

Later in the show they replaced the nunchucks with a rope.
It was so confusion as a kid what weapon he have because I had episodes on VHS, in some episodes Mikey have nunchucks and in other he have a rope
These mistakes can teach you a lot on how they possibly made the cartoons. Well I pondered on it a lot as a kid most of us know now. I think these problems happened a lot and couldn't be fixed due to deadlines. Communication errors.

It doesn't have to be perfect. Those mistakes are what makes the show so much fun to watch
even when i watched this as a very young girl i was always going "wtf" at stuff like this.

When they were working on the second episode, one person in charge of coloring might have mistakenly thought all the turtles were supposed to wear red bandannas.
I love those old cinemassacre videos about nostalgic shows. I mean they are nostalgic themselves by now. Nostalgia inception. 😅😜🤔
I was born in 1979 and was a major TMNT fan at the time. I remember taping the episodes during weekday mornings on VHS so I could watch them when I returned home from school (if there was nothing good on Nickelodeon that is).
Even though I was little, I still remember those errors😂 idk how some people can’t understand those errors.
I remember when the turtles had the same colors or wrong ones. As a 5 year old, it didn't make sense but seeing two Mikey's amused me
As a kid, I always noticed how the back half of be-bop's mohawk was boar colored and not purple like the front of the mohawk was.
