ATV aD5 Drum Module Review

- The aD5 module is priced at $1099. So that means its going head to head with the Roland TD25($999) module. This module has a lot of things going for it. It can work with Roland and Yamaha pads, AT THE SAME TIME! But that extremely wide dynamic range is its major selling point. I can explain it, but you won’t really GET IT unless you play it for yourself for an hour or two. There really is nothing like it in that department. Also, if you really like the sounds, then this is the module for you, because at the end of the day, that’s what really matters. But for those that like control over their sounds, this is defiantly NOT the module for you. This module is about absolute simplicity. It uses as few buttons and knobs as possible, it gives you no control over the tone of each drum and cymbal. It is what it is. Its not for everyone, but Its worth a look if you’re in the market for a module.

I own this because of this review, Atv has since released 2 kits and this kit shines when you convert an acoustic to electric right out the box I wasent nuts about it but then I used rim triggers on an acoustic with mesh heads and it now what I've always been looking for very satisfied with it but having trouble correctly doing updates
Good to know! i havn't used the module since all the updates (mailed the module back to ATV) so It would be interesting to see how far it has progressed.
This module sounds SO GOOD
Great job dude !! Your really starting to get better on every new video. Hope you keep it up till the Mimic haha
+Sean Raden Thank you so much Sean! I'm working with new editing software, trying to up the quality.
Wow how did I not know this existed? Great review I am going to look more into this. I am doing a A to E conversion of a Sonor drum set. I am looking for the most real experience I can get. I understand the simplicity but that has a huge appeal to me. Thanks Justin glad they sent this to you for you to review.
It was cool to review. Its not the module for me, but I know there are drummers out there that would really appreciate this module.
Nice playing, I agree the cymbals sound incredible as well as the toms. I think the snare is very nice I would like to see the Bass drum have more thump. I know this video was made in 2016 but it is now 2018 and they are still selling this same module. I really love the shell kit but wish the module was updated from this video?
motodrummer I wonder why!
He didnt start using the module, until: 10:05. Plus the Roland mesh snare head is worn.
Hi Justin. I realize this is an older video but hope you still see new comments. I really like the sound of this module. I would be very happy with the full ATV aD5 drumkit and module but it would likely cost more than $6000 cdn. I would like to record using this module so would later have to buy their expansion rig that will give the 8 independent outputs. Can you suggest a reasonable approach for purchasing a kit to use with this module. I have an old Ludwig kit I am not using so could add mesh heads and triggers. Just seems that when I start adding up the price of Roland cymbals I am getting close the cost of the entire ATV setup. I guess another totally different option could be the Roland TD-17 KVXS and trigger Superior Drummer using this modules usb midi function. Any input is appreciated. (I have owned a TD-20 kit in the past but didn't really like the sounds. Also owned the 2Box Drumit 5. It was my favorite so far but I found the cymbals to be sometimes inconsistent in their triggering. Thanks.
One last thing: when you play kick, snare, and ride really fast, the ride sustain sporadically clips. It's something they need to fix in the next update.
hmm i get the same on my dtx500 .. i was looking to upgrade to avoid the clipping..is it something to do with polyphony? this has 64 note polyphony and the dtx 500 is 32
As much as i love the ad5 this ride clipping does bother me,i brought this issue up on vdrum forums almost a year ago but no one believed me and said i hit the ride near the bow zone and that that caused it but this never happened with my td9 module and the same set so i knew it was an ad5 issue and to this day they still haven't fixed it.
Congrats on 2k subs!!!
+Jordan Bryant I know, I'm so excited! Thanks man!
Hey Justin! Did the eMERGE sound better to you than the ATV aD5 Drum Module? Thanks and God bless for all your cool vids. Really helps me make a good edrum decision.
Agreed I have my 25 now and snatched up a ad5 for 650 was going to use them together. Dont think i can go wrong for that price.
There are some nice cymbal sounds in the AD5. Could be an interesting combination.
ah at long last! i was hoping you'd do a review of the ATV aD5 ..thank you, Justin
+John D Robinson Sure thing man! It was an interesting module. It Not the right one for me but it was fun to play.
it does sound great though you did it justice with your video!
I think I actually prefer the sound of the AD5 over my mimic. Just barely. The mimic outshines this module in every other area though. ATV need to release a true flagship module. If they do and it sounds this good I'll probably sell my Mimic for it.
I'm so so happy with the sounds from the ad5!! Just wish ATV would release a load more different instruments on the sounds store!
As a 15 year hard hitter I just want that real kit feel and dynamic I don't even care for sounds as much, just want a brain that feels like an acoustic that I can lay into does it feel closer to a real kit with this brain? Love your videos dude they are great
Thanks Mike! This module is good, but I'd hold back on buying it until they do a few more software updates
between the roland td25 module and this ad5 module which one would you buy? The prices are pretty much the same new. Or maybe you would get the roland td30? Just wanna know your opinion. Greets from Ecuador! Your videos are really informative so thanks for the time you spend making them :)
Excellent review.
Awesome detailed review. Just bought mine. I wish the tuning feature was available though.
Thanks man! I think they'll add that feature in the future. At least I hope so.
You're welcome Justin. I've enjoyed your ongoing drum reviews and commentary. Seems to be the only place online that covers ALL aspects of the new gear that's coming out. Keep up the good work. :)
I try to :) thanks
This is almost perfect for a natrual sound. But no round robin? How did they miss that feature?
Clau you review their cymbals
First of all thank you Justin! I am a first time electric drum kit buyer, and your videos have been so so so helpful!! You the man! Does ANYONE KNOW how you would get effects onto the ATV module? Doesn't look like there is any built in options to add them internally, so how would you put effects on them? This doesn't have split outs for each drum/tom/cymbol?
I think they're at 10 kits now, and it doesent sound fake and plastic like most of the modules out there
Sadly, that's not a very high bar to bet :( most drum modules sound like trash, glad new ones like this are changing that.
So let me get this straight: I would have to use this into a Roland circa TD25+ module for it's benefits in conjunction with Addictive/Superior VST on top of a custom edrum kit with mesh heads and a converted kit in order to replicate the feel of an acoustic with the sound of an acoustic. Also the Drumtec video doesn't have the same volume imbalance issues that are clearly apparent here. My research on this subject matter is driving me bat-shit crazy and I'm already bat-shit crazy!
No one said you had to buy this module. No you don't have to use it with a TD25 style kit. And if you are using Addictive Drums or some other drum software, the module don't matter much anyway. You don't need to drop money on an expensive one, stick with what you got. This isn't the module for me, but it appeals to some drummers. Everyone needs a different setup. Good luck with yours.
My bad, I'm not hating on anything I mentioned, especially not this module. I love the dynamics on the aD5, but I love the Roland module's features, that's why it's driving me nuts. In the end i'll probably just end up converting an acoustic lol.
Finally some one dared to really HIT this thing. One big downside I hear is machine gun effect, and that what you sa about the volume knobs. other than that, its fine
+Jesus Palacios (JPdrums) I generally play soft, but when the situation demands it, I can break drumsticks if I want to.
Hey Justin great job you are doing! Dose this module have midi connection and also what do you think about their drum pad kits?
Great video!
+Katkarapu thanks dude!
hi, my name is gianluca, I recently purchased the atv ad5 module, my set consists of hit hat yamaha rh135, pcy 135, pcy155, roland cy8, drums with ddrum, my problem is that I can not map the different dishes! could you give me advice? Help!!
many thanks in advance!
I'm thinking buying this module, and I wonder if the cables are long enough to use with an existing acousting kit, in particular for the floor tom at right ?
Hey, I am the drummer at a small-ish church and I was wondering if the ATV artist standard with the ad5 drum module would be a good thing to buy. We currently have a td-6v and it sucks.
What did you go for in the end?
These don't sound bad that's for sure. Could adapt at least one of those kits for fast metal.
Can you adjust the volume of the individual drums/cymbals? That right hand crash seems overly loud. Thanks for the vids :)
Hey Justin I’m considering this module I really love the sounds I have a TD 30 like you how to you think it compares putting aside the editing capabilities just sounds
I like the sound. I have the yamaha and the Roland brains. Too processed for me...
Amazing review! One thing I would like to ask you, the hi-hat sounds is only closed and open or it has some half-open sounds as well? like Roland that has at least one half-open sound.
Oh yes it has many variations of open and closed.
Thank you!
I’m so confused, just watched drum tecs vid on this module on the atv kit and it had way more then 5 kits
They added more in a software update
65 Drums oh thnk, I’m new to edrums I’ve been acoustic for 5 years now and am about to get a adv with the ad5 module so should be good
Hey Justin have you seen the new atv drum set, and if you have will you share your thoughts on it?
working on a video now
Is this module have USB Midi so you can trigger your VST drum libs? Thanks!
Hello 65! Merry Christmas!! I have a question about jobeky drums. what is your general opinion about them?Have you ever played an actual jobeky drum set?? just yesterday found them on the net and I am curious, because the price is OK compare to drumtec and other brands. Thanks a lot!
I know of them. I know they have a good reputation and offer similar stuff to Drum-Tech and Field. But sadly, alot of these acoustic style edrum companies are based out of Germany or Europe. So I'd have to actually buy one to play one.
65 Drums Thanks for your reply!!! Sadly you haven't got any on your hands. Have a good new years eve and Drum a lot! Thanks again!
Ship it to me! Thanks.
2000 subs!
Hi. Thank you very much for your videos, they are very useful! I am from Argentina, and I have a question. Between a Roland TD 12 module and this ATV aD5 module which do you prefer? Also ask if the edges of toms may sound like a cowbell. Sorry, but my english is not very good. Thank you very much!
I'd get the ATV over the TD12. But If I was in that price range, I'd actually get a Roland TD25 module. It's about the same price as the ATV ad5.
Thank you very much for answering. The problem is that I have the hi hat VH 12 and the TD 25 is not compatible.
Does TD 12 have latency problems or something similar? Does the VH 12 work well on the ATV aD5?
Thank you very much!
Last we tried, the VH11/12/13 were not 100% smoothly with the AD5 :( but that was almost a year ago. A software patch may or may not have fixed it. No, the TD12 doesn't have latency problems.
Sounds: Yamaha is studio pop, ATV is feking garage punk rock and i totally dig it.
Another question. This module can be used with a Roland VH 12?
yup
Hi Justin can this module be used with "Addictive drums" ?? if so what is the latency compared to Roland. Thanks
Hi Kevin! Yes it can be used with any vst and the latency of just the module is around the same as roland
Sorry one more question. How does this modules usb connectivity compare to a td-50 ? Ive heard the td-50 is easy to connect to a drum program such as addictive drums now to trigger any drum sounds to your pads now. How does the aD5 compare ?? And thank you also !
Hey Justin which one would u go with td25 or ad5
I'd go with the TD25 all day, every day. Its the better module.
should be able to layer sounds with 25 if i wanted to right.
yeah
Do you think the pearl mimic sounds will be as good as the atv
ATV isn't my favorite module of all time. But yes, I think the Mimic will actually sound better than the ATV aD5
can this be used with Aquarian onheads? thanks
Yes, aquarian onheads can be used with alot of modules
Any word on the Alesis Strike Pro
I hear rumors that It's coming out in a month or two.
There actually is eq settings
When I made this video there weren't any
@@65Drums really? wow
are you considering to change your name to 65Drums
+tanmay bhandari Well that's a long story. My channel is called Justin Greenawalt. But when I designed my website, I decided that name was too hard for people to spell, so I named it 65 Drums. Then when I started a Facebook and Instagram, I thought I might as well name it 65 Drums too. Not sure if I'll change the channel name or not. I've thought about it. But I've called it Justin Greenawalt for so long, people might get confused if I switch.
Roland td50 the best!)
I've heard this unit in a few demos ,beside a 2BOX it sounds very un layered in its sounds
the layers of samples just arn't there for detail.
The 2box has massive layers on some snare sounds ,this is better than most but its still manchine gun beside a 2 box.
Also that 5 kit thing is a bit of a joke to say the sounds have so few stacks.
I know the 2box inside out ,the 2box is about as close as you will get on sample play back
Ok having said the 2BOX is killer because you can throw massive files at it ,it has
huge flops in other areas.
The unit is really fussy ,if you get a unit dont do a review of a 2box on roland pads .really its not made for that it will just jump to its top sample layers with its very hot inputs.
It's a side trigger unit and the head is damped with foam.
The unit is no way a roland ,its got a basic feel to it Its basic but gets the job done.
The hi hat is a pain and the unit wont run anyother hi hat control. so its 2 box or nothing
maybe 42box control.
The 2box along with everything else cant run a roland pad ,yes i hear it plays rolands but ive never come across a pad that uses roland reversed polarity systems. ? so its threshold based and thats no way the same.
The 2box is a great sound but its not as modern in build as it should be .
Coming from a roland to a 2box is a bit of a shock ....it doesnt even have built in reverb
:)
+bashwhack thanks for the info :)
kiss on your butt for this man, thanks a lot!!
I have had the 2box for a number of years now. It's a module you don't really fall in love with right out of the gate. I messed around with triggering addictive drums and making sample for a while, but slowly I bonded with it. It's strength is in the dynamic control... I swear you can pick off individual samples in the 127 layer deep sounds. I didn't even realize I was doing it for the longest time. Might be the pads plus the drumit 5 module too idk. Apparently the drumit 3 is really good with various pads. ("I recall some youtuber saying you could strap a piezo on a banana and get a good response")
Looks like hes worn a hole in the snare head...........
+passtheparcel2007 Just through the first layer of the dual ply head. I went out and bought a new one.
Keep it simple dude. You mix it up too much and it takes away from the purpose which is to hear each sound definition. Appreciate the video.
I'm not that great though lol!!!!
Good performance :)
As soon as i saw the snake cable i lost interest in this module
I hate cable snakes too
Funny thing about this old comment is at the time i knew very little about the ad5 but anyway for some reason not long after this while researching modules to upgrade my td9 i ended up giving the ad5 another chance.
I looked at the roland td30 but even used it was 2k cad and i couldn't justify spending 2k on used gears,i looked at the td50 as well but wasn't impressed with the sounds or the price,i was very impressed with the mimic but it was a bit pricey and the touch screen made me nervous at the time.
I looked at the 2box drumit 3 and decided to take another look at the ad5 as well. The drumit 3 sounded good but they kept delaying it and it seemed like it was never going to be released,i also wasn't impressed with the 4gig non removable sd card.
After spending months looking at module videos and reading specs i finally settled on the atv and i am very happy with it,still not a big fan of the cable snake but i can live with it after all my td9 also had a cable snake. For me the cymbal sounds are what really sells the ad5 to my ears they are the best i have heard, the set up wizards are also very nice and time saving.
So i have come full circle i started out not giving the ad5 a chance because of the cable snake and now i own it and love it. For me i don't need a lot of kits i just want a nice sounding realist maple kit and the ad5 has that,i got the one i'm using free from the sound store.
