Two things really stood out to me in this episode. First, Peter Bourke as Sgt. Simon Varney did an excellent job! When the young sargeant shared his first theory with Comm.Dalgliesh l thought, "Hmm🤔, that is a *really* good theory"-- then remembered, it's PD James-- *of course* it will have excellent twists. Having read & watched both PD James & Ruth Rendell l should have remembered just how well they do that!! Happy to see Dalgleish put the kettle on and settle into partnering up with Varney for this series. Great pairing works well together. The second thing is pure nostalgia-- the set did not have to be designed per say by way of warehouse stored vintage pieces pulled out for period pieces. The background photos of Boy George & Princess Diana on the girl's wall were what you would have found on many young girls' walls back in 1985!!👍 Slow-paced, yes, as some have said, lacking in blood, gore & violence (thank heavens), it flows nicely along like a canoe down a quiet river. I remember just how wonderful the Dalgleish mysteries were to cosy in with on Sunday afternoons way back then...sigh...☺️🇨🇦☘️
Thank you for expressing so well what l feel. Very astute observations. I too was impressed with Peter Bourke’s Sgt. Varney. Don’t recall seeing him anywhere else so l researched a little and found an impressive resumé. But l also wish to see him elsewhere in my favorite mystery shows. Also, you’re“spot on” about the ending scene. It has both a cozy feel and the excitement of the chase! Reminds me of serials at Saturday matinées (17 cents) in the 1950s. But l don’t have to wait a week and BBC & ITV are so beyond the crude theater skills of those days…
Awwhhh… look at the pics behind her at 44:40… I forgot this show was made before LDs sudden passing. 😢 The ending of this one is kinda sad… I really liked her lovely character.
Mj: I feel that way about most of P.D. James characters but I still like her novels and the T.V. series: The Murder Room, Cover Her Face, A Certain Justice, Shroud for a Nightingale, Death of an Expert Witness, Devices and Desires; my least favorite one was Original Sin and I was not too crazy about Death Comes to Pemberley but I read it because I like Pride and Prejudice. There are movie versions (or T.V.) of the ones I mentioned in RUclips and I've read the novels. I can't remember anything else but then maybe I'm not giving you any information you already know.
@rayof 315 To use Jan Hall expression "wham/bam," If you read P.D. James novels they are not wham/bam type at all. There are many other crime series on RUclips that might suit your taste. Just type mystery crime T.V. series USA or British or whatever language you prefer and you'll find it. If you see something that is divided into 6 parts, almost one hour each, it will not be wham/bam. I enjoy short crime mysteries myself, but I happen to like P.D. James as well. There is something for everyone on the Internet.
Frustrated with his career, Commander Dalgliesh is invited to Toynton Grange, a home for the disabled, by his old teacher, Father Baddeley, who is resident there. But unbeknown to Dalgliesh, something happening at the Grange is making the Father uneasy, and Dalgliesh quickly finds himself investigating a series of mysterious deaths. - from IMDB
I agree that this story is too slow. Interestingly, the book was also criticized as being too slow and with a "lame" ending. I've always felt the characters aren't believable and this adaptation doesn't correct the problem.
What is someone with a heart problem doing there, running around? Why is Ursula with MS in a place where her room involved climbing stairs? Just asking.
The girl with the heart issue, I was waiting for her to pass out from a darn heart attack the way she kept running everywhere 🤣. Ursula was just being tortured having to climb stairs, I felt bad for her.
@@susanstjohn8267 coffee mugs at 20:16? They still make mugs like that in 2019. They're all over in the US and I'm sure in other countries: mostly made in China for the rest of the world :)
Yes, her role in this series is most unpleasant. Always shifty, always talking too much and smoking like a chimney. That Jenny is as unpleasant, if not worse. You, cow!

Always nice to Art Malik. He was great as Hari Kumar in "The Jewel in the Crown".
My favorite of his roles. I still get a feeling after all these years when I am reminded of that series. Great musical intro as well.
……have you seen him in UK 2part drama, ‘Arthur & George’, with Martin Clunes as Conan Doyle.
The close caption translates Dalgliesh into dog leash.😀😀🤣🤣😂😂😂
😆😆😆😂
🤣🤣🤣
Love the little scene with Dagliesh and Sgt. Varney.
Mmm, that beer looks tasty (28:27) ! Insp. Morse would've enjoyed that lunch. :-)
😂👍🇨🇦☘️
So true 🤣
Cheers
Enjoyed the movie. Thanks.
Not a movie it's a series 🤔🥺
Thank you!
This is episode 4, we still have episodes 5 and 6 to come.
I feel sorry for Maggie.

……the wonderful Roy Marsden. Always excellent in every show he’s in. Watch S H Jeremy Brett film with R M in it, ‘The Last Vampyre’. Fabulous!
Cheers x
To quote Alice..."they are all very unpleasant people"...

"You've achieved far too much", well I'm sure the writer thought so in their mind but it certainly wasn't shared with us in the script.
It is a bit on the slow side. But I like that they give an insight into the characters. A lot of programmes today are to rushed.
@rayof 315 characterisation or wham/bam action. Me? I like a bit of character development. Love Wilfrid. He's SUCH an unlikeable, pious idiot.

@@janhall1641 I agree with you. I cannot stand Wilfrid. You find characters that are not flat /one dimension in P.D. James writings.
This is episode 4.

Thank you, indeed.
Ah, yes! Thank you so much, that helps!
I don t understand why they don t respect the books, it would be so much better.

Wilfred really has a shifty look as if, he is constantly lying or up to no good!
I agree. I find him totally unpeasant and not trustworthy, but he is a good actor.
lynda renaud ...I don’t think he’s a real monk, he said in a previous episode ‘ the Book of Revalations’
……he was in an Insp Morse episode, ‘Greeks Bearing Gifts’………
He's a zealot. They are always unpleasant.
The butler did it
Episodes 5 and 6?
❤

Lisa Kilmer maybe not her best work...

in the book all patients are on the ground floor...
episode 4
Very gross looking coffee mugs
They were of the time. I remember them. There was lot gross in the 80s!

This is ep 4 fyi
Actors and actresses read their dialogues obviously and the director doesn't do anything about it. Elderly can't say by heart. Annoying!
An awful lot of gulping when Anstey is on screen. More irritating than lifelike.
FY I this is part 4
Way too long series with a lame ending.
yes, 5 episodes is really airing it out too much. Such a shame
John Clark ...6 epidodes
I can't stand the doctor's wife! No wonder the doctor looked for someone else... I hope he gets a divorce!
Perhaps your American 😮😢.
That's Sarah, everyone knows that 😱
