  • When our Benedictine community arrived in Connemara from Ypres in
1920, it was the founding mission of the nuns to build a monastic life at the heart of Kylemore. Together they have lived, worked and prayed in the grounds of the abbey for over a century, sharing their contemplative way of life - and Benedictine values of love, hospitality and stewardship - with the Kylemore community far and wide.
All of these years later and this founding mission and commitment to their values has culminated in the completion of the first female Benedictine monastery to be built in Ireland for 400 years. There, at last, we are delighted to welcome others to share in our culture of faith, community and spirituality at Kylemore. Sometimes all it takes is a single vision of a few dedicated women - and the support of a global community, rich in talent - to build a legacy that will resonate for generations to come.
Welcome to the future of Kylemore Abbey.

Beautiful landscape . I always thought the title for Benedictine nuns was Dame rather than Sr.

You are wonderful ladies of a spiritual nature with a lovely house in Ireland , how many immigrants can you take from Dundrum or Coolock to assist the hard pressed tax payer . May God Bless you all Amen

The pattern of the brick work looks more reminiscent of a mosque than a Christian place; quite unusual to my eye.

So they're leaving this beautiful old abbey to live in that unly modernist building ? It's sad. Besides, they don't even look like benedictine nuns, apart from the mother abbess. Why is she wearing the traditional habit and the rest of the sisters don't ?

Sort of New world order temple. Hard to find the spirit of St Bénédict anymore in his abbayes.

What an unnecessary waste of time and money. Why weren't the nuns satisfied with the beautiful oold building that has stood the test of time. They spend an exorbitant amount on an horrible modern building
Anyway why would they even want thousands of people from all corners of the world converging on that quiet peaceful corner of Ireland. The new building is a monstrosity and doesn't fit in with the area.

Probably because the original building is cold, drafty and the aount of money that would be required to update the plumbing, electricity and heating would be three times the amount spent on their new place. Old bones don't do drafty halls. so well.
Besides the original abbey was built by millionaire Henry Mitchell in 186 8. Mansions and nuns don't go together. Mansions also aren't known for the many contemplative spaces required by a holy order. Reno on the mansion would also be an exorbitant expense.
A new building, built to their exact needs, makes sense. It doesn't have to be aesthetically beautiful. Only functional.

Benedictine nuns just spent 10 million Euros on a convent for 15 nuns. It's well for some!🎉
