  • The Vengeful Assassin is the unique combination of the Assassin Rogue and the Oath of Vengeance Paladin that allows consistent critical hits that allow us to have both sneak attack and smite. This means insane damage in the first turn of combat and consistent damage every turn after that.

Man, don't tell me, I had this build in mind for years and I have a cool backstory and made drawings, prepared my acting, I really wanted to play that character... But I'm the DM and I can't get anyone else to DM...

Alert for going first forever is another feat choice

Alert is a perfect feat for this build!

Just as a note, the way Assassin is written, it is insanely reliant on going first in combat, since the automatic critical hits only happen against surprised creatures, and the way surprised works, a creature who is surprised is only surprised until the end of their first turn in the combat. So if you surprise an enemy, but they roll higher than you in initiative, then RAW you don't get the automatic crits or automatic advantage to your first round attacks, because they technically still go before you even if they can't take any actions during that turn.
Because of that, I'd personally recommend Oath of the Watchers instead of Oath of Vengeance if the campaign is going to level 10+, entirely for Aura of the Sentinel. Because there are other ways to get Advantage relatively consistently beyond Vow of Enmity (including Steady Aim for Rogues), but it's hard to overstate how much this build suffers if you don't go first in initiative.
Alternatively, if sticking with Assassin/Vengeance, I'd recommend Harengon for lineage instead of Half-Elf, because I'd value proficiency bonus to initiative rolls *way* higher than an extra point in one ability score for this build.

I have to say, Vengeance paladin definitely has its merits in combination Elven Accuracy.
I think the larger impediment to surprise generally is the rest of the party. Wood elf could get you access to wood elf magic for pass without trace, but I do acknowledge that feats are not free, especially on a Paladin

Add one level of hex blade then you can use your charisma to attack instead of decks and just get the minimum stats you need from multi classing 13 strength, 13 decks and then pump everything else into charisma

@@Troankyram dex has more value than cha in this scenario. Your assassin features are dependent upon your stealth beating their perception, as well as then beating the enemies initiative

@@elliotbryant3459 It's a little sad, since as cool as a concept Assassin/Paladin is, in every way I look at it there's always seems to be a slight change that ends up fulfilling the concept just a little bit better. I honestly think that Vengeance Paladin 6/Whispers Bard X basically accomplishes the same thing, but better. Especially if you take the Metamagic Adept feat so you can Quicken one of the Hold spells, enabling critical smites on potentially multiple rounds without having to win initiative and get surprise first. And with Jack of All Trades and Expertise boosting the character's initiative and skill rolls, as well as access to spells like Invisibility, if you play things smart you might get surprise anyway.

@@CivilWarMan ya, magic solves so many problems for an assassin. Etherealness or remote scouting followed by a Dimension Door to the enemies location; Path Without Trace, Enhance Ability, Steel Wind Strike, Banishing Smite -Magical Secrets is pretty crazy. It's a bummer that it's such a late game feature. Can't say I'm a huge fan of the bard spell list on its own.

I couldn’t recommend Elven Accuracy enough on this build, it’s really fun with vow of enmity! Otherwise harengon, bugbear, a flying race or a feat-race definitely have their appeal. I think wood elf might be worth consideration for increased likelihood of surprise via the Wood Elf Magic feat for Path Without Trace.
Additional feat considerations: eldritch adept-mask of many faces could be useful for gaining surprise via infiltration; Alert for higher initiative; And piercer could get you an additional 3d6 on a crit round if TWF weapon fighting with shortswords. -I think a lot of these feats might be worth going to 4 in rogue for the extra feat (-or rogue 8 to maintain the feats and get all of the rogue goodies).

If one wanted to max dexterity and use light armor, and Owlin would also be really fun. Taking everything that makes this build fun and then letting it fly seems like overkill, lol!

  • @aceofspades8474

If you want to get more attacks on that first turn of combat for more auto-crits (especially before getting extra attack) you could consider dual wielding. If you go that route, I’d probably recommend going thri-kreen for your race so you can have two light weapons (either shortswords or scimitars) in your smaller arms and a shield in one of your main arms, you’ll still have a free hand you could use for something like a hand crossbow for a ranged option or a rapier for a little extra damage when using cunning action. Unfortunately paladins don’t get two weapon fighting as a fighting style but the extra crit smite can be worth it, and you can dip swords bard if you really want two weapon fighting and extra spell slots. You also get unarmored defense of 13+dex and can get advantage on stealth while unarmored which pairs fantastically with rogue and can help get surprise off.

If dragon marked races are allowed, I would recommend mark of shadow elf. This would give you pass without trace, to guarantee surprise. Also, as others have said, Elven accuracy would be amazing.

If you don't need Elven Accuracy or if Dragonmarked races aren't allowed, then going Earth Genasi is an alternate way to get PWT

It is a good race for high lvl paladins anyway, since greater invisibility and elven accuracy work great for crit (fish) smiting.

Why not go Bugbear for the extra damage on round 1? Extra 2d6 per hit on round 1 is great. And adding 2 levels of fighter is even more nova build.

    • @iammattis1479

The extra +1 to an ability score is definitely very valued at low levels, but if you rolled stats, got a free first-level feat, or were starting at higher levels(probably around level 7) you could reasonably swap it out I would say

So, I actually played a build very similar to this for a level 15 one shot not too long ago. Except I was a Tabaxi and took the alert feat and I took the alert and shadow touched feats. It was ridiculously fun and a character I would like to revisit in the future.
The Tabaxis feline agility pairs really well with the rogue's steady aim feature..

I would instead consider taking harengon (get that initiative boost) and devotion for added accuracy. Using a Hoopak could work great, since no weapon swapping needed.

Since you’d really want that surprise, it could be advantageous to look into Blessed Warrior for your Fighting Stile (granting you the Guidance cantrip and one other cleric cantrip) and taking the Racial Feat “Wood Elf Magic” which would grant you the ability to cast the spell “Pass Without Trace” once a day - to *ensure* that surprise for one or two important encounter. Between good Dex, Stealth Expertise, Guidance and Pass Without Trace you’d be very unlucky to fail that surprise.
Keep in mind you can’t use Guidance and Pass Without Trace at the same time (both are concentration) - Guidance is for when you don’t wanna spend that 1/day Pass Without Trace

Add one level of hex blade for the ability to use your charisma for all your attacks. The best can trip in the game that’s based off of your overall character level not your warlock level 14 strength 14 strength 16 charisma 10 int 10 con and 12 wisdom using point buy with you half elf abilities. And only stat to focus on is char until 20 then go con for hp at lvl 4 take shadow touched half feat at lvl 8 fey touched depending on how you build the class 18 cha that way a bunch of free teleports a free necromancy skill like false life and blink in and out of the sneak attacks

Honestly, take two less levels of paladin and add two levels of fighter and this would be a more effective nuke. 4 guaranteed crit smites on that one turn.

I know it’s just theory craft and I love your videos, but you’re 5D8 max damage dice for smite (6 if the target is undead). With this in mind that top out at a level 4 spell slot. At level 13 you get your 1st level four spell slot which sucks to me. Id personally stop my Paladin level at five, then the rest in Assassin for the sneak attack dice.
