  • Today we're taking on the Warlock / Ranger Multiclass build and we came up with the Wall of Fear. This build utilizes the Undead Warlock and the Swarmkeeper Ranger to be a master of cantrips to create a ton of battlefield control and unique combo synergies.

    Swarmkeepers are so good for flavor, it's probably my favorite ranger subclass.

    My big issue here is that the swarmkeeper forced movement is enemy STR save vs your ranger spellcasting, so actual success rates for the forced movement are likely quite low. The medium armor and the all right spells (like goodberry i guess) we get from ranger are definitely a thing. Also, we probably should invest further into pact of the tome - we can get some really based cantrips like guidance and later if we take the invocation that allows us to ritual cast, we can gain access to phantom steed (since undead warlock). but yeah, armor dipping on a warlock into ranger is a bit sus i think - we always need to remember the moderately armored feat exists and is the best feat option for warlock. i think we can accomplish a very similar straightclassed build by starting vuman/cl with moderately armored, and grabbing telekinetic at 4 (granted, a less powerful push, but it uses your warlock dc at least and still boosts your casting stat)

    Also eladrin have a build in fear and teleport.
    To me nothing beat the dragon born undead warlock conquest paladin with dragonfear for a fear wall. Im happy to see this strange mix of class like you do ❤

    A arcane monk, someone whose soul has been infused with arcane magic to the point that it effects their Ki and how they fight.

      My gut says Arcana domain cleric.
      Also take telekinetic half feat.
      Strong argument to go for the Astral monk to really focus on wisdom. Or get magic Initiate for shillelagh.

      @@benjaminholcomb9478 oh that wouldn’t be bad, especially since monk weapons scale with their martial arts dice

      @@benjaminholcomb9478 or you could even just go full astral monk [really lean into it with Astral Elf as the species] -or even the way of the ascendant dragon subclass, and reflavor it as a very focused area of the arcane arts. Alternatively, with arcana cleric 6 & mercy monk 3+, you could end spells on any creature you utilize hands of healing on.
      I think the telekinetic feat with mage hand cantrip known for the full range telekinetic-mage hand would be really cool as well for this concept.
      A wild magic barbarian dip could be really thematic too. Or Eldritch Adept-Eldritch Sight if you have the spellcasting feature requisite

    • @benjaminholcomb9478
      @benjaminholcomb9478 7 месяцев назад +2

      One of the more niche openings is that they could cantrip booming/greenflame blade with a monk weapon. Idk that it would allow for unarmed strikes afterwards or stuns, but it gives them a solid attack that is cheap.
      That's if they aren't using their Astral arms though.

    • @elliotbryant3459
      @elliotbryant3459 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@benjaminholcomb9478 RAW, they could still try to stun them, but FoB requires the attack action to ffirst, rather than the cast a spell action. If the were hasted they could do both action through. Or Bladesinger wizard 6 brings you cantrip extra attack [and also haste access]
      Another neat interaction is with polearm master and warcaster you could cast a spell on a creature when they enter your reach with that weapon [staff or spear for monk] -so you could booming blade them at this time or if they flee

    If I wanted to use this build, I’d use the “Wildhunt Shifter” race.
    So I can build this as Wererat character for a “Richemulot” adventure.

    So I'm looking for a film that can transform a lot. Racing shifter may be using the form of dread of beastparberian a spell. What do you got and wouldn't be worth going through it to level 10 to get the elemental wild shape. Or would it be better staying in likeighty normal shifter for doing other transformations? I would love to see a build of this

    I like combining Swarmkeeper Ranger, and Circle of Spores. So I can kill my enemies from afar with Necrotic daming as a reaction and turn them into Zombies.
    I like the theme of Infecting my fire ants swarm wth Ophiocordyceps Unilateralis.
    So I'll put a bunch of arrows in their body, and with their last bit strength as they crawl toards me to reach form my foot, my Ants will bite them and infect them Lanect Liver Flukes and turning them into Zombies.
    and then I use the Zombies as meet shields.

    You called it a "Wall of Fear" Warlock. This just makes me want to hear more about mixing Gloom Stalker ranger with pact of the Pact of the Grear Old One or Fiend. Either either of these sounds like it would be. Would love your channel to build one of these options. I would most likely use a shadar kai or maybe a tiefling for this build idea. Although it might be really cool also, to use a Goliath, to take advantage of umbral sight and/or devil's sight, as this is a race that usually does not have dark vision. And the idea of surprising enemies with a 7 foot tall gloomstalking fiend or Eldritch horror is fantastic. Also, a dragon born with the Draconic Fear feat would be amazing for this concept, and also gets to have devil or umbral sight on the build, along with striking fear into the hearts of it's prey, as it lands a surprise attack from the shadows.

    My warlock ranger?
    Ranger 5, then Warlock 3. Pact Magic + the Ranger spell list is insane. Goodberry in particular is obviously very exploitable with any amount of down time, but even being able to cast Pass Without Trace twice per short rest is enough to make sure you have it up nearly all the time. In any location where there's any kind of cover at all, your party is going to be getting surprise rounds extremely reliably in almost every combat. That's a big deal and would be enough on its own, but you'll also be avoiding troublesome random encounters while exploring, and able to eavesdrop extremely safely in social encounters. Always-on PWT is truly a game changer.

    Hey Sage. I was looking at racial abilities recently and came across the Simic Hybrids 'Manta Glide': "When you fall and aren’t incapacitated, you can subtract up to 100 feet from the fall when calculating falling damage, and you can move up to 2 feet horizontally for every 1 foot you descend."
    I feel like this ability is severely underestimated and underappreciated. I'm really interested in seeing how it could be abused.
    Do you have 'Misty Step'? Congratulations, you now have 30 ft of extra movement: Misty-step 30 ft straight up, then allow youself to fall 30 ft back down, taking no damage, and moving 2Xs (60 ft) horizontally the distance you fall. If I'm reading this correctly, you'd still have your movement too. This, along with Simic Hybrids 'nimble climber' or the Jump spell could be very cool (I don't even know how it would work with Fly, or Dimension Door). I'd love to see you do a build that used this.

    I'd make it primarily a Ranger with a few levels of Warlock. Wisdom is the primary focus here, followed by Dexterity, then as much Charisma as I can spare, and everything left over going into Constitution.
    For lineage, I'd go with Shadar-Kai, primarily for Blessing of the Raven Queen for a defensive teleport as well as Fey Ancestry for advantage on saves against being Charmed (that isn't a linchpin of the build, but it does have a nice interaction with it).
    Start off with a fairly standard archery Ranger build, with 7 levels of Fey Wanderer Ranger. This would make the character a pretty effective party face, since I'd be investing in both Wisdom and some Charisma and Otherworldly Glamour lets me add both to Charisma checks. The main reason I'm here, though, is for Beguiling Twist, which allows a reaction to attempt to Charm or Frighten a creature whenever a different creature succeeds on a save against Charm or Frighten.
    Once that's done, put in 6 levels of Undead Warlock. This is why it's more important to have high Wisdom and Dexterity than Charisma for this build. Go into Form of Dread, and shoot an enemy with an arrow. If they fail the save (based on Charisma) they are Frightened for a round. If they succeed on the save, I can use Beguiling Twist to force another creature to make a save (based on Wisdom) or be frightened or charmed for up to a minute. For Pact Boon, I'd go Blade, with Devil's Sight, Improved Pact Weapon, and Eldritch Smite.
    After that, it's pretty much just combine Warlock and Ranger to whatever fits best. I'd go either 13/7 or 12/8 for the Ranger/Warlock split, the former to maximize spell casting power, the latter if I find that I really need that additional ASI/Feat.

    I just realized another swarm keeper warlock build that could be made, it’d probably be completely not optimal but using the swarm keeper’s ability to add piercing damage to any attack and the doa genie warlock’s ability to add bludgeoning damage to any attack (both with no use limit buy only once per turn) you could use a slashing weapon and trigger the crusher, piercer, and slasher feat all on the same stack. Taking three feats like that is probably not the best idea but if you can get the bonus effects they all trigger on a crit you can do a extra damage and force all the targets attacks to have disadvantage and all attacks against them to have advantage for a round; just taking crusher and slasher together is probably wiser as they synergies better and piercer just adds some damage but just the concept of all of them being used together is cool.

    So how would you build the most telekinetic character possible. I know we pick-up Mage Hand & the Telekinetic feat, Shield & much later the Telekinetic spell, but how do you put everything together so they don't just feel like a character with the Telekinetic feat. I'd imagine Animate Object would make sense too.

    I played this exact build, but with fathomless warlock instead. It wasn't nearly as effective I wanted it to be because the gathered swarm knockback requires the enemy to make a save vs your wisdom from ranger. If you want it to work, you need to bump wisdom hard.

    • @bwaresunlight
      @bwaresunlight 7 месяцев назад

      With that being said, the ability to move yourself 5 feet and the ability add the additional d6 damage die doesn't require a wisdom save, so still useful.

    I really wish that you would say the recommended point buy distribution instead of just which stats are most important. Especially for a build that's so MAD, you could probably only get your Wisdom to 13 which is a downside you would need to factor in when deciding to play this build.

    Hey mister. Nice build. Therefore very squishy at level 1 lolll.
    What would be your Warlock spell / cantrip selection at each level of progression?
    Im also thinking to get The feat Fey touch (+1 Cha and access Gift of alacrity to give initiative boost and Misty Step to get more movement options... and also that 2 spell free to cast wich is a great boost forxthe warlock. the other will be a + 2 Cha to cap to max at 20 the main stat. so 4 level in both then maybe continue warlock or adding levels in sorcerer for spicing up spells numbers and metamagic boost.

  • @morganpetros9635

    I kinda like Treantmonk's ranger/warlock build, Fey Wanderer ranger with one level of Undead patron warlock, simply due to the synergy of causing fear with your (13 CHA) warlock special ability and then when (not if) the monster makes its save, using your reaction to cause the frightened condition essentially for the rest of the combat.
    He waited until level 8 to take warlock, though, and I'm not certain I'd have done that since, like you, I *REALLY* like being proficient with WIS saves. And if you're going to wait 'til level 8 for the synergies you're looking for, why not wait 'til then for Beguiling Twist? 😉 It's only a one-level delay, after all.
    Anyway, I really like the Fey Wanderer, so that's probably how I'd build a multiclass with these two classes.

    I would not recommend relying on shocking grasp as a means of retreat, it has always failed me when I've needed it most. You're better off just disengaging a lot of the time, unless you have some attack roll buffing feature that isn't needed elsewhere
