Makes sense, as a guy who usually main heavy characters, takes some patience to get the quicker enemy cornered to win a match. While matching other heavy characters can be epic since you both will just go for it and fight a good battle

Yoshi's mobility, large hit boxes, weight, and damage output actually give him one of the few positive matchups over Steve. The high level Steve players think it is either even, or +1 yoshi's favor. And suarez himself, thinks its a +1 matchup, yoshi's favor (though this hasnt 'exactly' been proven much in high level tourny play due to lack of high level yoshi mains besides suarez)
also yoshi rarely makes it to the top 8 brackets because has lots of trouble against zoners and characters that can wall him out like swordies.

Good to know that Joker is a good character. I just play as him because I like Persona. He's also fast, and I do prefer speedy characters.
Now if only I was good at Smash Bros. Maybe I'd actually be able to utilize Joker to his full ability. He does have infinite potential, after all. What with his Wild Card ability and stuff.
... I wish they found a way to utilize his Wild Card ability in Smash Bros. Would have been sick to see him summon Alice or Lucifer.

It also depends on how good the player is with said character, as if played well, low tier characters are great to use occasionally

Steve is a very hard to play character who deals low damage at first but gains some fair amount of damage when he gets diamond tools

I refuse to switch from Dedede (rarely Kirby, or K. Rool) just because I hate this establishment of tiers. Sure they’re true and based off of cold, hard data but I wanna throw of the established norms with the little-to-no influence I have over it.

Probably the only factor mentioned that he doesn't have is speed. A sword like his definitely excels in range, and getting shield-broken by him is both fairly likely (Down Smash is a big-time shield killer) and a death sentence (Incoming Giga Flare.) Recovery's pretty decent, and coming forward sword-first (again, with its reach) provides an obstacle to whoever tries to edge guard.
