I was 8 and my neighbor across the street was a 83 black man that raised me like his own son,he took me to the movies,to get ice cream, fishing, hunting, he showed me so many things my father didn't have time for. This wonderful man was so Dedacated to Jesus and his wife & dog ( frisky) .when he died ,I felt he took me too.Still today he crosses my mind, songs like this helps me remember that old man who didn't see color, love me like he did.

The song was co-written by Ronnie Dunn & Craig Weisman. The song was written because of Ronnie Dunn's own experiences with faith & spirituality. He said he has realized it is not about fame & money but about your Journey & what you believe in, and for him that journey was about his influenced by his faith.

Yeah, this and Whiskey Lullaby are the only two songs that will never fail to bring me to tears every single time I hear them. I was already on the verge of crying again not even a minute into this video. It's such a beautiful and relatable story to begin with, and it always makes me think of how I never had a chance to spend time with my grandparents growing up and what I would give to have shared even a handful of moments like this with them before they were gone.

My grandpa. He's was in Patton's 3rd Army. The Bulge, Rhine River, and 2 more battles. He lost all the other men on his 105 howitzer from a German 88 in the Bulge. He was the only one not hit from the blast. He spent the rest of his life raising a family, a crop, and cattle. He spoke few words and the words he did speak were kind and humble. He loved singing old hymns at church. He taught me how to love the Lord with a humble heart. That's my Mr. Wrigley ❤️

Ronnie Dunn was preparing for Seminary to become a minister when he won a songwriting contest. He accepted an invite to Nashville to write songs. He met Kix Brooks there and, well, they became the top country duo of all time. Yeah, there's a lot of honky tonkin' songs, but ol' Ronnie works in a song like this now and again...powerful, I tell ya!! I've been going to church since I was 3.weeks old. 65 years. Believing in God's gft is the key, not attending church. Blessings!!

She was an older lady who taught me more about life, the meaning of true happiness, the value of faith and family, than any other person or experience ever. Also, I love the reference to "the words written in red." The song is referencing the words in the Bible spoken by Jesus. I'm sure most of y'all know, but I wanted to mention it.
I LOVE this journey that you are on with country music. Real country music isn't short shorts beer and tailgates. It is music that touches the soul. Music like what you just listened to. Chris Stapleton, Jamey Johsnon, Merle Haggard (my all-time favorite). Real country music will move you, touch you, male you feel. Short of Stapleton, I can't tell you the last time I heard a real country song played on country radio. I thank the good Lord for other formats to find the real stuff!

This is the first time I’ve heard this song. Brooks (or Dunn) did a great job singing it. You may not know that there are a whole lot of Christians in the world of Country music. Watch their awards show sometime, and you will hear them praising their Lord all over the place! If you are a born again Christian, and I think you are, then don’t hesitate to say so. We can’t worry about stepping on other religion’s toes when it comes to sharing our faith. Who knows, something you say may very well bring light to that other person who is still in the dark. Honestly, my daddy is my Old Man Wrigley. He could fix anything, he was my protector, my role model. When he got to the point where Alzheimer's took every memory it could, it couldn't shake the faith out of him. He might not remember who I was on a given day, couldn't necessarily hold a conversation that made sense to us, but the man could still send up a prayer like a preacher, every word made sense and every person he came in contact with got prayed for (whether they wanted it or not. Lol). I love this song and while of course I find it sad, I also find it so hopeful. Old Man Wrigley went on home to be reunited with his wife and his baby and eventually I'll see my dad again. Thanks for the react on this. Btw, you mentioned that you liked storytelling, which is why you're getting country suggestions out the wazoo. Lol. Not a whole lot tells a story better than a country music song.

Boys need true men, to guide them in to truth of knowing how valued they are. It's America, we need youth in America to feel they have value....love what you do.

For me that man is my platoon leader in the Marine Corps, that man was the kindest, sweetest, most loving, caring badass son if a butch I’ve ever met and I’m a better man for it, roughy me how to be a leader, I would follow that man into the debs of hell without a weapon. And I hope one day I can see him again and let him know what he meant to me then and throughout my entire life

For me it was an old black man, Mr. Wallace. He and his lovely wife Mini lived about 2 miles down the road. I used to go by and see if he needed any help around his farm. Like Ronnie Dunn, I became very good friends with Mr. Wallace and his Wife. When Mr. Wallace died I was 17 and I was absolutely devastated.

I saw them a few years ago in Vegas and the whole show was amazing, but when he did this song I don’t think there was a dry eye in the place. He absolutely KILLED it, just as good live as in the studio. “You can’t tell me it all ends with a slow ride in a hurst…”

My daddy's best friend was like my second dad. He was honest with me and always gave it to me straight. He was basically my son's grandaddy for the first six years of his life (until he passed last February), because my Dad passed 12 years ago. He was an influence on my son, as he was an influence on me. ❤️

I tell you listen to Vince Gill doing the song, Go rest high on that mountain. It was played at my Dad's funeral. He was a simple, good man, a carpenter by trade. Suffered later through Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. I cant listen to it without going to pieces.

Like you, it was my choir teacher as well. Mr. Heller was my choir instructor from the 7th grade til i graduated int the 12th. My best friend i were in the Mixed Choir as well as the Performance Choir in high school so we had him for 2 class periods all through high school. The Performance Choir was a close knit group. We were a small school from a small country town but we toured the state, competed (and won some!) state competitions, made Christmas Carol commercials for the local news, went caroling at hospitals and around our small town finishing up with a party at his house where the boys helped him bring in and set up his floor to ceiling 12 ft tree whilst we girls unpacked the ornaments. i will never forget those times... i didn't get to go to his funeral as i was stationed on the opposite coast with my Marine husband and 8 months into a difficult pregnancy, but my friend told me that there were representatives from The Windborne Singers for each year he taught to sing, "i'll Walk With God" and "Amazing Grace." i still think of Claude Heller and his beloved white coffee stained mug often. 🎶 ☕ 🎶

So many people think the term hillbilly simply refers to mountain rednecks. Most have no idea how the term came about. The Scots-Irish or Ulster Scots as they’re usually called in the British Isles came to the American colonies from Ulster in Northern Ireland en masse around 1740-1745. The coastal areas were already settled pretty heavily by the English so many of them moved up into the hills and mountains of Appalachia. The term “hillbilly” refers to the fact that they were supporters of Protestant King William of Orange back at home (known as King Billy).

there is one thing I always noticed in this video, when he gets to the house, after the funeral, the Bible pages flip from left to right, exposing the photo. Once he picks up that photo, the pages flip back right to left as if the old man wanted him to find that picture reminding the boy of who he is now with.

I'm an atheist and one of the hardest parts of that is not having the hope to see people that have passed away again. My dad passed in 2014 and it is the hardest thing going through life believing that he is no longer able to see what i do with my life. Songs like this make me wish for the days when i was Christian or even as a kid being Mormon. But on the other side of that coin i think it makes me cherish each day i have with people more than i would if i thought that death was not the end.

I lost the love of my life at 25. I'm also an atheist. I believe there is a higher power that gives us strength to endure & the ability to overcome the hard truths the world hands us. There has not been a day since my late husband's death I haven't felt his presence. The love we shared is alive and felt everyday.

Helen McCarty, my Girl Scout leader. If it hadn't been for her, I wouldn't have survived childhood. My adoptive mother and my uncle were beating me, and she made them stop. I loved that woman dearly. We lost her a few years ago to cancer. I still cry when I think about her sometimes, but mostly, I just remember how she made me feel like one of her own.

I had a neighbor, Mr. Whit, that I spent several days, hours, minutes every chance I could listening to his stories and learning life lessons from when I was a teenager. He was 86 years old, still tended his garden every day, raised and slaughtered his own chickens for food and would lend me tools when I had chores to do outside. This song hits me like a ton of bricks right in my feels every time. I can’t help but think of Mr. Whit and my fondest memories of that sweet old man. Thanks for reacting to this song!

I've seen a lot of you r videos and just found this one. My Mr. Wrigley was my father-in-law. even after a life started in hardship he grew up to be a man of God and preached until he didn't have the strength to speak anymore. Even after he got sick we had what he called "Grandpa sermons". these were the ones where instead of standing in front he would sit in a rocking chair to preach. Although his physical body could not stand his voice would carry God's word to all those around him.
