Great tip. If your neighbors are looking out their windows, they are saying oh my gosh he is now out there hugging his tree.😂 Love all your videos Matthew
Matthew, thank you for always finding inexpensive ways of either buying plants or structures and for sharing with this wonderful community. We love you and are truly inspired by the beauty you create!!! In a world full of hate……. We watch your channel and see love and kindness. 🌸🌸🌸🌸
If you need to install four supports all around the plant, you could use clear zip-ties to connect them and give them more sturdiness.
I needed a support for my clematis, but trellises are really expensive! Plus, the clematis doesn't like really thick poles. So I took vinyl-coated poultry mesh, spray painted it, and used outdoor light clips to attach it to my brick facade. I couldn't be happier! (And I think the clematis likes it pretty well, too) Bonus: the roll of mesh was pretty long, and I had enough left over to create a tunnel support for my vining vegetables, too.
Thanks Marliese! This tip for the clematis is exactly what I need as I just bought a dr. Ruppel yesterday! Where did you purchase the vinyl coated poultry mesh? And what are "light clips'? TY 😄
@@jwillgarr I got a roll of 100 ft on Amazon, just some generic brand. The clips I used (also Amazon) were advertised to hold light strings (like Christmas decorations), but they’re just white plastic with about a 1/2” diameter and shaped a bit like a lobster jewelry clasp. Since my house front is white painted brick, I needed something that could easily blend. There were smaller ones in different styles, but I liked that these allowed for easy removal too. They came with screws to mount them, but I used heavy duty Gorilla glue instead. Hope that helps! Dr. Ruppel is a gorgeous bloom!
Stop it. I came to YT to find out how to bend metal to make plant supports for my hydrangeas and luckily I found this video after an hour lol. Come to find out, all I needed was a tree 😂
Well bless my heart! Thank you so much! Instant subscriber!
Thank you for this idea; gardening can be so expensive.
Nice idea! Also nice to be greeted with a “hey ya’ll!
This is probably one of the most useful videos I’ve found recently. Those bent supports are exactly what I want and they are so expensive to buy and the cheap ones are flimsy. Thanks!
This is a great tip! My Rockin Salvia needed support last year and what I had was not tall or strong enough, but better than nothing. (Yes, from GS, and many $$) Unfortunately, my Limelight Hydrangeas would need steel poles to keep them up after a long rain!😊
Love your videos and thank you for all the hard work that you do. I live a little north of you in Troy Ohio. And I have quite a bit of Annabelle hydrangeas. I remember seeing the gardeners world video on how to do this but couldn’t remember it. So thank you for reminding me. Quick question do you remember what department you got the 6 foot pole wire from? It can be a little overwhelming at Menards and sometimes not quite so helpful. Thanks need to make some hoops! Happy gardening
It’s the hardware section around the screws, bolts, etc.
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden👍 thanks😊
Monty would be proud !!! Fantastic demonstration !🌷🌱🌿 ( I have also made some of his wooden structures , for added rustic architecture )
Matthew - this is so helpful! I have some traditional Annabelles that definitely next the support. Thank you for sharing!
I'm hoping for no more frosts in Indy, I went ahead and planted a new clematis this weekend.
Thank you Mathew .🌷💚🙃
Great idea on the new supports! And thanks for the tutorial also!
A tip I will use . Share more of your tips thanks!! Going shopping!
Great idea and help. Thank you.
You have made me believe I can grow hydrangeas and fall in love with them in your garden. Just gorgeous.
Thank you Mathew for this idea. I m using them for my smaller climbing roses to get more blooms. Also, anybody on here that wants to watch gardeners world it’s on RUclips. . This years and reruns.
Ditto Linda! I watch the current season episodes of Gardener's World every Friday as soon as they drop! Great program!
I learned something from this video. Thank you. I'll try to look into that wire at Home Depot.
Hello from England, I enjoyed your video and I saw the Monty Don episode you spoke about. I am glad that thinner steel bars will suffice as the thicker ones are expensive here, thank you
Hi Matthew! This was a great DIY tip! Plant supports can be very expensive. Thank you so much for sharing!
Love your channel!! Thanks for the hoop demo. ❤
I decided to bite the bullet and order three sets of four supports from Amazon this year. I was tired of moving supports from plant to plant, often too late to do a really good job. I still need a few more, but feel I can have some available after the peonies stop blooming. They are pricey, but Amazon did have the best prices by enough to make it worth my while. Making this hoop shape for the sides is a great idea. Will look for suitable material. Hope they work well for you.
Thanks so much for this video!
Thanks for the pointers! 💡🕯️🤗🤗
That was a great idea! Yes, I like watch Monty Don. Your garden is looking great! Cold here again and getting some rain. Hopeful next week I'll be outside planting annuals and getting my veggie plants in! 😊
What are the rods called at Lowes or Menards? What would I Google? Metal rods? What diameter did you use?

@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden Thank you.
Thank you! I didn’t hear you mention the thickness of the size steel you used?
I love Gardeners World and subscribe to Britbox mainly for that program.
Roll Tide!!! Alabama girl living in coastal NC.
The thickness is going to depend on how supportive of a structure you want and what strength you have to bend them. But the ones I used in this video specifically are these: www.menards.com/main/hardware/sheet-metal-rods/hillman-reg-steel-solid-round-rod/11157/p-1444432422923-c-9215.htm?tid=855e66e6-93fc-4b37-adb2-b1f02577f5bf&ipos=1&exp=false
Thanks for sharing these support tips!
Good tip, we have 25+ limelight hydrangeas, so I'm looking for an economical way to support them when they start drooping
Thanks Matthew love it. Gardening can get so expensive every tip helps! Do you mind telling where you got your fencing and gates?
Are you local? Eads installed my fence and did an excellent job. I believe the brands they use are nationally known with great quality. I don't know the specific brand of fence off hand, but it's likely Specrail.
Thanks I really like the look of it. I am local. Just wanted to check prices. Not sure I’m ready to put fencing in yet, so many things I want for my garden. Looking at tool sheds not sure what I need to save for first.
Pretty clever, Matthew!
Good idea!
Thank you
Thanks for this tip, will definitely use it
Thank you for the tip I will definitely trying it
What are those beautiful Evergreens?
Would you share the type of trees you have in between the hydrangea. I live in California zone 9. Have always wanted Pyramid Arbs that didn't grow super tall. Those look prefect in height. Also do you prune them or are they growing natural pyramid form. Love them!
Looks like Emerald Green Arborvitae
Can you add the Menards link to the product? These would be so helpful in my garden!😊

Awesome idea!!! How much sun do your Incrediballs get daily?
Just a few hours of afternoon sun. They're north to north-west facing.
Thank you for this help! Do I deadhead Annabelle during the season?
Can I use peony hoops?
What a fantastic idea! I'm thinking of replacing an old mophead hydrangea and a scraggly rhodie with a hedge of Incrediball hydrangeas. Do you know what those steel rods are called? I will have to ask someone for help at Lowe's or Home Depot to find them lol. I do buy items from Gardener's Supply but I agree that some of their merchandise is outrageously priced!! Thanks so much for this DIY!
They're just called steel rods in the hardware section. There are various heights and thicknesses. I don't know if Lowe's has them of not. My Home Depot did, but they were not long enough. You could potentially order them online and have them shipped to your home from Menards. www.menards.com/main/hardware/sheet-metal-rods/hillman-reg-steel-solid-round-rod/11157/p-1444432422923-c-9215.htm?tid=855e66e6-93fc-4b37-adb2-b1f02577f5bf&ipos=1&exp=false
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGarden Thanks so much! I think I'm going to order them online then.
What side of our house did you plant your incrediballs?
It's north to north-west facing. Very little sun until the late afternoon.
My Incrediballs do fantastic in full sun. Unbelievable growth and blooms.
What department in Menards were these found?
In my Menards it's located in the hardware section.
Has anyone tried this with copper?
Copper is much too soft of a metal for it to provide support in this manner. Or you’d need extremely thick sized rods in comparison. You could of course use steel and a copper colored spray paint if the color is what you’re looking for specifically.
Thank you Matthew... I love Gardener's World... but missed this tip. Thank you for sharing.
