Wish List: thegardencalls...
I had to relocate my Diablo Ninebark, so I cut it back severely. Well, it came back with a vengeance. It didn’t get affected by the cut at all. I also have 2 autumn jubilee Ninebarks that I trim each year by about 1/3 & they also respond well.
Hey brother! Loved seeing you featured in an email from Heirloom Roses today!
Thank you! ❤️
I REALLY can’t believe how much you’ve gotten done since moving in ! Everything is looking very good especially considering the drought, rain I find is ALWAYS the best and makes plants really grow, when I hand water my plants survive but they don’t thrive. 🌺💚🙃
I’m sure you know the saying, first year sleep, second year creep, third year leap, so I wouldn’t be too hard on the hydrangeas you just planted this year ? 🌺💚🙃
Thank you Matthew. I really like the trees you added to the front garden, as you said it balances everything out. 🌺💚🙃
I literally used a chainsaw to cut down nine barks that were woody and lopsided in growth. I didn’t care if they came back or not but now that they are coming back, I like them much better.
Love the species hydrangea you showed. But I couldn’t catch the name. Does anyone know what it is? I’m also in zone 6 with alkaline soil so it’s difficult to get blue blooms. Would love to order one.
Hydrangea Involucrata
Enjoyed the video. I did cut our Ninebark back to the ground and it has performed exceptionally well in just a year. I would encourage you to do it.
Oh thank you for letting me know! Snip snip here I go!
Hi Matthew-
Awsome post as always- thank you!
Can you tell me where you purchased your Kindred Spirit Oak? Im hoping to do a wall of them at the back of my property. I ordered just one as a trial last year, and it was tall, lovely, and healthy except they folded the top to fit it in the box. Good old fedex took awhile to deliver it, and even though I staked it to try and straighten/protect it, the top 2 feet broke off.
Besides telling me where you purchased yours, do you think I should give up on the one I have with no leader?
Thank you for any advise/help you can offer.
Ps: I have cut back a Nine Bark (Diablo, I think) and it came back with a vengance! Dayton, Ohio here.
Certainly don't give up on the one you have! It'll establish a new leader as it gets settled in and you may not even be able to tell it by the time it grows in. This one I got from the Brown Nursery tree auction last year as well ball & burlap, but they should have them year round (except maybe right now since they just had their auction). You could always call and check. The ones I had at my last home came from Natorp's and I think they regularly carry them. They were containerized though and did require staking until they were better established and had stronger trunks.
Good evening Matthew, lovely video and information as always. I have ninebarks that are over 5 feet tall. Also have the little devil ninebarks. I have pruned both varieties back severely every fall. I have never had a problem, they always look so healthy and thrive all summer long. Thank you for sharing your garden, I am always looking for new ideas. 🌿🧡🌿
Oh my gosh ! I looked at the radar, as I was panning over to Va. to see what’s going on down by my daughter, holy moly if your in the area I panned over your getting hit very hard with rain ! 😱 🌺💚 Probably grateful for some rain but probably not that much all at once. 🌺💚🙃
👍😎❤️
Everything looks great considering what our weather has been like here. I have started putting my garden to bed for the fall. It was just so sad looking after this heat. Thank you for sharing. ❤❤

Great seeing everything filling out, yes those new trees are more balanced. Your hard work is bringing its rewards. Cheers! 💜💙💚💫
The magnolia as a foundational piece makes so much sense! Great idea! Signed, a Southerner 🙃
Wow you have moved this garden along in such a short time! Thanks for sharing with us
Looking great Matthew! I was missing your videos!
My scarlet dogwood did not do well. Does not like full sun! Needs shade and tons of water!
I cut nine barks down every year. No problem s!😊
Everything looks great
What are your plans for the lawn grass?
Will you do bulbs this year?
Hi, I love how your garden is coming along, particularly the front bed. 😊😊😊 The new blue lace cap hydrangea is amazing. I am sure that over here in the UK we will not be able to get it😢.
It’s not new. It’s a species variety that’s pretty old. That’s why it’s hard to find.
I think your planting beds are looking pretty good for fall. My humongous coleus are camouflaging my fantastic crop of weeds. Heat and a little moisture this summer make the weeds grow wild. Question: what is going on with your maple tree under which your hydrangea trial bed is planted?
The drought. Trees around our area look horrible.
Love hydrangeas.

Pop star is a hard one to beat, my pop start hasn’t stopped blooming not even in the heat and going into fall he is covered in buds. Georgia zone 8a so we get blue blooms
Oh you just had to throw those blue blooms in my face. Rude! 🤣
