Super helpful! As I have commented before, I live on Cape Cod and have very similar weather and growing conditions, maybe a touch warmer. Thanks for another informative video. Bloomstruck macrophylla from Endless Summer does not disappoint for me in zone 5. I have a hedge planted facing north against a wall where they're probably protected; hence, I get beautiful blooms every year.
I ordered 8 hydrangeas & got them the other day from Proven Winners .. With this weather , I’m going to keep them inside a little bit before I plant them . I have 30 or more already in my yard , they are my favorites!! ♥️♥️

When I lived in North Carolina, I had a lovely big blue hydrangea and I cut it way back because it was “scraggly” - big mistake! It hardly bloomed the following year and I felt terrible for ruining it. So glad you did this video - I’ll be more educated now. 💗 from Pennsylvania.

OK, I am blaming you! Yesterday I went to our nursery that carries tons of Proven Winners plants. I picked up a Quick Fire Hydrangea standard and a dwarf purple Bloomerang Lilac. Too early here for annuals but I also got a King Tut Papyrus for an experiment in one of my fish breeding tubs. It is small enough I can bring it in and out until frost danger is past (May 15 here). I have to go back Monday because they are getting in Show Off Sugar Baby Forsythia. It is your fault !!! You are an enabler. :)
Howdy great vidieo I have a couple hydraingias here piniculata and the old fashioned blue so so good with them love the hat I have one but it’s bigger but keeps the hot bama sun off my head my big beard keeps sun off my face mostly lol mike zone 7b north bama
I have had the EXACT same experience with the 'Bloomstruck' Endless Summer macrophylla hydrangeas. I typically do not get early spring blooms here in northern Indiana, zone 5b, but I do get the summer blooms. I ALSO got mine on the dead plant rack, this time at Lowe's. This is my 3rd spring for them.
Hi Matthew! I don't have any hydrangeas, yet, but I really enjoy listening to you talking and explaining about different things/plants. I'd like to try a small hydrangea, but I would need to plant it in a pot in full sun. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you so much for sharing!
You should probably go directly to Proven Winners website and search for hydrangeas and narrow it by your zone and size. I don’t know your zone, so I can’t recommend anything, particularly in a container. I also probably wouldn’t recommend full sun for a container hydrangea unless it’s a very large pot and you have a robust irrigation/drip system to it. Hydrangeas are thirsty and anything small will dry out pretty quickly and they just won’t love the drier conditions. The smaller arborescens like Ruby or Wee White, or a small paniculata like the new Fire Light Tid Bit or potentially even a Bobo may be good choices depending on your zone.
@@SouthernersGarden Hi Matthew! Thank you for the reply. I'm zone 7a and don't have drip set up to the pot I would use, but could water them often. The only place I have for one is either in full sun all day, or it would get full sun in the afternoon. All of the pots in the back face Southwest. I will check PW website to see what might work. Worse case scenario is it won't work and I'll just enjoy yours. LOL! Thank you again, for your response!
Is this to be done in spring? I have fluffy type and it's in it's 2nd summer. I have not pruned at all. Blooms are heavy and they're flopping. Help! Thank you! 🦋
Any suggestions on what to put on hydrangeas to deter deer!
I don't have deer issues, but @The Impatient Gardener on RUclips has a video on a liquid deer spray she has used in the past with some success since she does have a severe deer problem. I ziptie a bar of Irish spring soap to a garden stake. Works in my orchard as well.
I've worked in a few nurseries including Acorn Farms which is whole sale but also retail and no one has ever been able to answer the question "Why can't I get my hydrangeas to bloom?". They said the only time it bloomed what when they bought it. I am referring to the endless summer veriety. I knew they bloomed on the old growth but that was all. I actually would never buy this variety for this reason. You explained that last little detail of not cutting it back and just removing the old bloom.. Thanks
I've heard them referred to as "endless bummer". The Bloomstruck variety does appear to bloom pretty well for me just based on last year. We will see this year how they perform. Since every one I've purchased has come from the dead plant rack they need a little more love and settling in before they're going to perform like I hope to see one day.

I cut my limelights way way back and they grow huge every year....I used to have some that I cut back to the ground practically and they grew big every summer as well.....did I just get lucky ?? I just thought those were the only ones you could cut all the way back. Also are their limelights that are not tree form because I think I have those.
They will still put on substantial growth if you cut them to the ground. The problem is they most likely, depending on the cultivar, will not develop a robust, strong stem structure to support their blooms well and it could lead to floppiness. All tree form hydrangeas originate in shrub from. They've just been trained into tree form. Limelight is the most common, but Pinky Winky, Phantom, Quickfire, and some other paniculatas are also common.

I have read and heard my entire life that you should NEVER prune hydrangeas in the spring.
I have always pruned in the fall and growing up, we always had hydrangeas over our heads in size 5-6 feet tall! I wish I knew what types they were!
That's interesting, because I would never prune mine in the fall (but you can). If you prune in the fall, you don't know where the buds are going to emerge next Spring (which may require some additional trimming in the Spring to tidy up) and you lose all of that Winter interest!
