The USB power brick is because of eu regulations, they aren’t allowed to include them as per a cellphone created law years ago and I believe in Japan they followed suit. Only straight up NA consoles will have them included these days. I think it was tied to the law that required all cellphones to use standard USB connectors there.

    THANK YOU!

@@tresabyrd7932 Or they could make the 4:3 a 16:9 not by stretching, but by giving you a wider perspective on what's on the screen. Basically showing more of the things behind and in front of the camera. Why hasn't anybody done this yet for fucks sake, for high speed games like Sonic the hedgehog for example being able to see more of what's in front would make these games so much better.

A good reason to "stretch out" the image could be to fit 4:3 TVs that can't letterbox and are using some sort of HDMI downscaler.

The Neo-Geo Mini feels like Chinesium. Knowing how Leyou Technologies (a former chicken distributor turned videogame distributor/producer) had the company since 2014, the quality of this machine being this cheap isn't surprising in the least.
Even just making the "stick" a hat over membranes would've been better than analogue controls on a system originally designed with *digital controls* in mind. But just membrane switches would've took "too long to make" (read: too costly) just like what SNK's social media said about the lack of microswitches when someone brought that up.

Why are people still expecting usb power adapters? Heck, I have a lot of mini consoles and just ended up getting an Anker 8 port USB power hub. It only takes up one plug behind my TV but powers 8 USB powered devices. I have 6 devices right now that run on USB power so I'm saving 7 plugs behind my TV by using this. When things come with a USB power brick I don't use them. . .

I have the international version and love it. I never had a Neo geo at home and only played a couple games in my local arcade, so I have no real nostalgia. Mostly I played whatever games got ported to the Genesis or ps1. If you get one at the right price, it's fine.

I hate it when stuff needs a power adapter to work, but no adapter is included, yet every console made nowadays comes with an HDMI cable. Caddicarus said it the best. "I have so many bloody HDMI cables, I could hang myself with them!" I have 1 adapter. Only 1. It is a quick charger for my phone so not everything will work with it and if you need me to have an adapter that fits in the house, just throw the damn HDMI cable out and give me an adapter instead!

  • @David315842
    @David315842 5 лет назад

True that the HDMI issue is likely easily mendable and SNK can do that, but apparently if you want micro switches according to them it may likely bump up the price a bit from $130 or so to maybe even $160 or more, and then people will complain about it being expensive and controllers instead of being $25.00 they will most likely go to $50.00 and will be just as pricy as wireless ones for modern consoles, a further turn off. The no micro switch option seems to be the cheapest option SNK are going for, keeping costs down seems to be a recurring theme as this system does not have a built in battery. Perhaps they might address the issues for say a 30th anniversary of Neo Geo edition for next year, but we'll see.

  • @jamesburke2759

I would buy that in a second. especially if they included both the US/international and Japanese versions of games instead of one or the other.

The bad picture quality out and the joystick are enough to sink it for me. That’s basically all there is to say, is the control sub-par, does it look faithful on your screen? No on the joystick, no on the controller, no on the screen. Similar problems as the neo geo x from 2012.

Nice review but disappointed: always wanted to have a neo geo and love their games. You never pointed out the game list, but I can look that up.
Most important: controller experience and output options not good enough for what the market expects.
I agree that its convenient to just buy and turn on and the games are there, but I'm thinking most people we experience a short lived relationship with this product.
Today you can get reasonable to high quality controllers and myriads of emulation options to do this with better output at 1080p or higher, and run the entire library of a USB. To redeem themselves, SNK should have made the unit with awesome controllers, output options... at least. Finding a way to put more games will happen by itself.
Main point: what makes the neo geo special is that its crazy expensive and out of reach for many. If they would have made this affordable and awesome, (with options and good controllers) = would have been therapy and a solution to the specific crown who would have love to embrace this when they couldn't before; plus everyone else.

I think this system sucks though. This is the 4th iteration of the system (Mini japan, Mini International and Mini Xmas edition). SNK had heard the very negative reviews on the first iterations regarding the vaseline layer on tv and regarding the clicky pad.
But SNK did not care and released the exact same machine. This is just a very lazy money grab.
This product has nothing to do with the SNK of our youth, the japanese SNK. This product has been made and conceived in China by the new SNK chinese owner who are here to squeeze all the money they can from SNK.
    They are short-term greedy.
I prefer to play the Hamster emulated SNK games on my Switch.
Emulation is way better and, on TV, the quality is night and day vs this shitty Mini.

The issue you're speaking of,that vaseline like look probably has a lot to do with the fact they just took a free emulator (exactly like the PS mini ) and made zero improvements too it.
There is no reason it shouldn't look as good as the HAMSTER releases but that would require money and effort.

Neogeo Mini The Japanese system is great to me while not perfect like the Aes is damn near close. Sure the colors have a washed out look on the television and the filtering looks bad on hdmi the games on the unit itself is a spot on Neogeo experience. Im tired of the negative reviews bashing the system. I own the Aes, Mvs, and Neogeo X and love them all in fheir own way. Thank u Snk for rereleasing a classic machine. Long live Snk.

While it may seem counter-intuitive, I don't think these mini consoles are for diehards of the system(s). I think they represent a library of games for those who may be interested in getting into retro gaming for the first time and did not have these experiences growing up. Microswitches would be cool, but the casual player won't mind, I don't think. I think these devices are supposed to be snapshots of video game history, not 1:1 recreations at an affordable price.

Complete opposite. This is targeted especially to the diehards who are ready to shell out money for collectibles (and this is a collectible, nothing more)

I tend to disagree: if my dad wants to make me love the Beatles, he won’t make it play without the drum or a guitar.

I can't really tell what market they're going for.
With this particular version of a micro console.
The price is definitely not great, the emulation is decent (the US/international version has all that wonderful censorship) and the build quality is okay at best.
This was a low effort product. The emulation is free and open source that they just decided to use cuz they could. Exactly like what sony did with the PSmini.
Nintendo is currently the high standard.

"Good good good, I like this, that, this, that and pretty much everything here is solid!"
*sees the terrible game performance and the crappy controller*
Hmm.. didn't I see a more accurate review of this, where the reviewer said that the system was complete crap? I'm pretty sure it's the same product.. Was this video sponsored by however made this thing?
You can tell from the video that it doesn't run games well but I don't think he mentioned it once in the entire almost 6 minute long video..

The biggest bullshit other than the fact that these are overpriced junk is the fact that they aren't even rechargeable and need to be plugged in all the time in order to play it..

Not really fan of the cheap plastic look of these. It's a neat idea but that's about it. This seems like a very niche product for people who don't want to spend money on Neo-Geo stuff but don't know how or want to emulate games. This whole thing is way too small and cheap looking that it looks like a kids toy really completely not understanding the demographic these games are aimed at.

They need to make an improved version without the stupid little screen.
Most people would want better emulation in a simple small little console the fact you can't play it without it being plugged in pretty much makes it non-portable anyway unless you want to lug around are USB power brick. They can make it look like the home console versions.

2:20 C'mon... talk about tiny. Too much of a toy, than a system or video game. Those things better be 20 bucks or less, because, that looks like something a kid would play with at Grammy's house, and then left and forgotten about...only to be found in her attic 10 years from then.

Geez, how can you even play this? The screen and the buttons are teeny tiny! This seems like it was made for lilliputians.
