A look inside an LED vehicle strobe set.

  • This is an LED strobe set I added onto an ebay order. It has two rather nice aluminium assemblies with an LED in each and a small driver module that appears to be based on a PIC12 style anonymous chip.

    They're down to 99p a pair now. Just bought some on ebay. And I don't even own a motorbike. You're a bad man Clive.. a bad, bad man.

      ON the road, they are. Not on the shoulder, and are good to warn people that you are broke down. They aren't illegal on the shoulder where I live, anyway.

    I was experimenting with mine and realized the unit was designed for two models, if you snip the one wire going to both leds in the middle and connect the side of the one led that has ground already to the pad beside the ground and the other led wire you snipped off to share the ground with the first led, you will get an alternating pattern from the leds much like a police car lights in the front grill

    I have an LED rooftop light bar and the control box for a police car. I was thinking about doing a tear down of it but not destroying it because I do want to sell it eventually. I also have the "in window" types and bumper types too.

    "Hopefully they have polarity protection built in..." I once got a set of HID car lights off eBay that advertised a polarity protection circuit. The circuit was a separate box on the main power input lead. Said box literally caught fire when hooked up backwards...

    Hello bigclivedotcom. Just discovered your channel by accident a week or so ago but have been having a blast reviewing your videos. I'm totally fascinated by anything LED, especially strobe LEDs as I use them in various configurations on my homebuilt RC sUAV's. I have been thinking lately of mounting some sort of strobe system like you presented here on my pick-up truck to use as emergency warning flashes when I'm stopped on unlit country roads at night, but couldn't find this kit on Ebay.
    Anyway, thanks for the lead and for taking the time to go through the circuitry. I just love videos like this! Thanks again.
    Edit: Tried looking up "Premiumgood" on Ebay but get a message saying "No longer a registered user."

    I used to travel to China and Hong Kong, and as it turned out there is a high import duty on processors in China, so the staff of the electronics manufacturer used to handcarry (Smuggle) them by train from Hong Kong to Shenzhen across the border. I always thought that was the main reason why they take the numbers off.

    I was thinking of building something similar with a cheap Arduino nano/mini clone with a few more programmable options, but I'm guessing it would cost me more than just buying this. Are those 3 watt LEDs? Or maybe a single higher power LED pointing straight up with an inverted reflective cone above to give a horizontal circular pattern. Imagine the possibilities with an RGB LED! Just finding the parts like the cone and perhaps a diffuser lens/covering might be problematic.

    Look quite good they are not legal on UK roads though, flashing vehicle lights can only be used for emergency vehicles except a rear red flashing rear light is allowed for pedal cycles in the 2005 amendment.

    I bought these before starting to tinker and seeing this channel...what ohm value is the appropriate one too not be driving these at 900-1000? ...n would it be ok to leave the board out of the enclosure and hot glue it front n back for protection SO I can mount it in a small space on the motorcycle? . .or is that a bad idea? ...thanks y'all!

    • @UnholyGoat
      @UnholyGoat 7 лет назад

      i've got some of these on my motorcycle, i took the board out of that ridiculous box and put a piece of heatshrink over it, not had any problems with it yet, don't know about the ohm thing i've just got mine wired to my horn via a relay and patched into the parking light wire for the power. For use on private land of course as it's not legal to use them on the road here.

      thanks but I'd rather do it right and install it on its own circuit and not inline with anything factory that the engineers have segregated into their own circuits for a reason. also make troubleshooting dead easy when the day comes as well as removal when it's time to sell and buy a new bike...no hack jobs to beat down my return price when selling. I'm in to win it and I'd rather KNOW what I'm doing and why I'm doing it and I'm anal about working on stuff that I pay hard earned money for and like to do things the right way the first time ...it's saves time and headaches in the long run and I learn stuff every time as a bonus. thanks for trying to help though.
