Included in The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society 50th Anniversary Editions are many previously unreleased tracks and versions, including this previously unreleased track ‘Time Song’.
Despite never been included on a release, ‘Time Song’ was performed by The Kinks at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in January 1973, celebrating Britain’s entry into the Common Market.
‘When we played a concert at Drury Lane in 73’ to celebrate us about to join what was called The Common Market, I decided to use the song as a warning that time was running out for the old British Empire.’ Says Ray. ‘This song was recorded a few weeks later but never made the final cut on the Preservation Act I album. Oddly enough, the song seems quite poignant and appropriate to release at this time in British history, and like Europe itself the track is a rough mix which still has to be Finessed.’
Ray Davies mixed the track earlier this year and it is included on the new VGPS Deluxe Box Set and Deluxe 2CD. The single version will also be available as a limited edition 7” single exclusively with pre-orders of the box set via The Kinks Music Glue official store, and as a digital download / streaming single.

That was beautiful, Dave and Caliborn.
house of dirk is one hell of a read
Yeah.
loooool
That’s how I got here too :wail:
i also came from that
I’m reading it now. I just got to the part with this song. It became my favorite fanfiction on AO3 minutes after starting it. you are so right OP
Ifykyk. Cal n Dave can get it 🗣️🔥🔥
Best band in history. Thank you for so many beautiful and heartfelt songs.
Sabbath? Zeppelin?
That is just my opinion. The songs of the Kinks speak to me more personally. If you prefer Sabbath or Zeppelin good for you. It is way better than nearly all of the modern mainstream music currently being recorded.
yeah true, Judas Priest are another personal favorite
who? LOL
They are in my top 5 favorite bands and what an eclectic mix: Kinks, Zappa, Steely Dan, Kansas, and Deep Purple (the thinking man's hard rock) and blues as a genre!
Good god, where does this man get these songs from. What a supreme lyricist.
Oh, and this one wasn't even worthy of being a b-side, right? Shelve it. If I'd written something half this good, it would be the greatest achievement of my life. BASTARDS!
one of those songs that is simultaneously beautiful and profoundly sad
Not so sad,,,
Today is my birthday....and I stumble across this absolute beauty, rescued from oblivion. Thank you, Mr. Raymond Douglas Davies, for one of the nicest birthday surprises in my 58 years!
carspiv belated happy birthday man!!
Sir * he was knighted.
You must be 60 years old now, how do you feel after two years from writing this comment down ? Best wishes, Younes.
@@ty00366 Better than I deserve! Thanks for your best wishes. I hope all is well in your world as well!
I'll be turning 67 next month February 2022. I was looking for songs about 'time' and came across this little gem. Thank you, Kinks!
that song made me think about how precious life is and why we should enjoy every second of our lives
OH yes and with The Kinks it's better. Thank you Sir Ray Davies
house of dirk
agreed
I hope time heals hate between Ray and Dave, most amazing brothers in the music history.
Well, they say The Kinks ar recording again! :)
They recorded five new songs together in 2016! Both brothers have said they want to finish that project up!
Maybe I’m wrong but I heard they had reconciled. Dave was convalescing after having a stroke and Ray helped him a lot. I think Dave actually stayed with Ray for a while. I have to imagine as these musicians get older they realize so much of their anger was youthful arrogance. Now that they’re older and they aren’t huge names anymore they can let the ego go. Besides, they still have enough of a following to play the summer and oldies circuit and generate enough income to help them in their old age.
This is one song that every single one of us can relate to.
House of Dirk, anybody??
hell yes >:]
Yep
HOUSE OF DIRK
Yep
Yep
WOW! This could be one of the most timeless songs he has ever written!
It’s times like these I remember why I consider The Kinks my favorite band of all time. The incredible songs just never stop coming- even their outtakes and b sides are amazing pieces of work.
HA HA HEE HEE HOO HOO
Wow I just heard this for the first time. I love it when I find a Kinks song ive never heard. Brilliant!! God save the KINKS!
I think if I had to choose a song to be played at my funeral, this would be the song.
Me too.
At my cremation i'd have disco inferno by the tramps played, its a hot little number that reached No one in 1977
Touching, deceptively simple, masterfully written, as usual. We're lucky to hear this Ray Davies gem. Nice video too.
LOL I CLICKED A LINK INSIDE A FANFICTION AND IT LINKED ME HERE LOLLLLL
CALIBORN: HEE HEE HOO HOO
How could Ray Davies be so deep back then? I am 52 and can barely scratch the depth of these words!
This is so beautiful. So glad you released it even after so much time. Every Kinks song is utterly precious.
I agree with Pete Townshend - Ray Davies should be the Poet Laureate of the UK!
Funny anecdote Ray recounted in a recent interview: Ray Davies and Pete Townshend met for lunch last year and Pete told Ray, "We never talk" and Ray responded, "Why start now?"
Ray did say in that interview though that there is a "mutual telepathy" between him and Townshend. I thought that was kind of interesting.
Thanks for the tidbit, Bob. I've been a fan since their first album 1964 or 1965 - somewhere in that long lost era. My memory sucks but sometime back then!
Absolutely agree, I often say to my mates he is the Poet Laureate of London. As a Londoner, he encapsulates London better than any writer, musician, chronicler etc Waterloo Sunset might as well be a national anthem of London. But Ray just gets London and any true Londoner would see that in his work.
Interesting Bill, I am from the states and I fell in love with the Kinks early on. In fact, I was in my mid-teens and living in Bangkok, Thailand from 1964 -1966. They had a radio station that played album sides and the station loved the Kinks, Stones, and Animals. Don't know why I fell in love with their music other than Ray's wonderful songwriting. Here I am now, 68 years old, and have every album that was released in the states plus some foreign records. They take up the largest section of my vinyl collection. Perhaps it is genetic as Ogden is a common name in the Manchester area. Thanks for your comment. GOD SAVE THE KINKS!!!!
If your name is Ogden maybe you have a connection to Ogden's Nut Gone Flake! Another great British album from 1968!
Would have fitted nicely on Village Green album!
Oh my God!!! What a beautiful thing, and that I had it stored in a drawer. It's incredible, I keep repeating that he is the purest and most intelligent composer in contemporary music. Also in the most prolific and most beautiful time of his musical career with his exquisite play Preservation Act. Creative beauty in the purest Broadway style. Thank you Ray for never disappointing me, teacher!!!!.
How is it even possible that one band's leftovers from 50 years ago turn out to be better than anything just about any other band in the world could dream of creating in their wildest dreams? Oh, we are talking about The Kinks? Yeah, it makes sense then.
huh?
So true - Rays writing is stupendous!
@@rstvmo heyyy is the Lo Fi Father!
tears of joy stream my face, Ray's trash is pure gold.
So Gucci gang is not the masterpiece of humanity that I thought it was and in the old days there was better music? I guess i have to start checking out more old stuff
love it! just the best band. thank you.
Christine Anne tt
In this, I hear "Young And Innocent Days" -- which I think is a beautiful song also.
And what did Shel Talmy, original producer of The Kinks, once say about Ray's songs? Something along the lines of "... he probably has at least ten #1's under his bed." Well, this must have been one of them. I'm just awestruck. Excellent! What a find!
Thank you, Ray, for sharing this gem at last. It's one of the best songs you've ever written.
No, not one of best, lacks the melodic acuteness he usually brings to his lyrics. Love the subject, but he did well to keep it in a drawer all these years.
This song I should have listened to as a child and have it recorded in my memories. It's funny, I listen to her now for the first time and it's really like I've known her all my life. It is a paradox. My senses place it as if it were a distant memory. It will be guess by the type of music.
BRILLIANT!!!!!
Tears in my eyes.
Love you Kinks! Thanks for making my time so beautiful.
What a beautiful nugget of a song - amazing such a quality cut has been in the vaults so long - love the mix, WONDERFUL video - what a delight all around! God Save the Village Green! Thank you for this and looking forward to the box set!
A true Kinks classic! What an honest song. Pure gold.
Beautiful song and arrangement. Plus the lyrics mean so much as I get older.
Great lyrics.
This song is hauntingly beautiful. ❤️
Great Song and Video.
Beautiful. It is so Ray!
Debuted in my weekly personal chart on August 19, 2018 edition :)
Ray must have been listening to a lot of Harry Nilsson at the time - even the vocal style and background vocals are a page from Harry's songbook. Not to say it's plagiarism - I think both he and Harry had a superior skill to tap into humanity and spin it into gold. Wonderful!!
I just heard this for the first time and I don't know how it got by me, but you're right. I have no idea if it's a coincidence or not, but more than any other song the Kinks recorded, this song would have fit nicely on a Nilsson album too. Could it be the reason they left such a great song off the Preservation album? Who knows?
Yes, shades of My Good Old Desk. Shame Time Song wasn't on Village Green. Would have fitted on perfectly.
This song puts our lives into prospective .x
TIMELESS! Great song, thank you Ray, Dave, The Kinks for all the pleasant time I've spent in my life listening to your tunes.
Almost as touching as Days....what a fantastic tune....God Save The Kinks!!
This is a definition of song. Beautiful 👌
Wow! Oh kinks - you did it again. What a wonderful surprise! I love it. Love it. Love it. Love it. Please release a longer version (perhaps?) And the video is
perfect. Love to see a longer version. I miss you guys - thought you were getting back together but that never happened. (Very Sad.)
This song wasn't actually recorded for The Village Green Preservation Society in 1968 but was recorded instead in 1973 for Preservation Act 1. Still a good song.
He might have written it during VGPS years, though.
Definitely written in 1973.
Lyrically, I'd have thought he had only just written it from his current, mature man's perspective. If it had been on Pres. Act One, it would've been one of the best thing on the album
Bob Smith ...thank you. I would have guessed that it was surplus to need for the Arthur album, with a not dissimilar theme to Young And Innocent Days...but I stand corrected.
Good call, Bob. The piano is the giveaway. Definitely sounds like John Gosling, which places it in the 70s.
Beautiful Kinks number, and I'm a Kinksfan!
i am not proud of the method i have come across thing song, but i am even less proud of the fact that i visibly flinced upon hearing the lyrics "time is among us".
Ever since my daughter was born 3 months ago, a change has come over me. i feel and sense my own mortality. all the time of my youth is now gone and almost forgotten. but i gotta admit too, as i watched this for the 3rd time on my own i had my daughter on my lap watching this video a few moments ago and she was mesmerized at the animation and i imagine she was a big fan of this lost Kinks Klassic :-) Thank you for sharing this to the world Mr. Davies, God Save The Kinks!
The Kinks as wonderful as ever. One of the greatest british bands.
Time lives our lives with us
Walk side by side with us
Time is so far from us
But time is among us
Time is ahead of us
Above and below us
Standing beside us
And looking down on us
When we were young
And our bodies were strong
We thought we'd sail
Into the sunsets
When our time came along
Now that we're nearing
The end of the line
Time has changed
Time would heal
Time will mend and conceal
In the end everything will be fine
And if we concentrate
Time will heal all the hate
All in good time
We go on
Drifting on
Dreaming dreams
Telling lies
Generally wasting our time
Suddenly it's too late
Time has come and can't wait
There's no more time
We go on
Drifting on
Dreaming dreams
Telling lies
Generally wasting our time
Suddenly it's too late
Time has come and can't wait
There's no more time
How did I ever miss this lovely song?
¡Gracias por tanto The Kinks! :')
I love this song!!!! I love The Kinks!!!!
я тоже
GOD SAVE THE KINKS! Love the tune!
Everlasting from The Kinks.❤
House of Dirk moment
Lovely. Just lovely.
Tired of waiting is OVER! Such a beauty
Ray is great. Ray is perfection.
Utterly gorgeous!!!
After listening to this song I started listening to albums of the Kinks, I new a lot of singles but never played the albums. I started with 'The Village Preservation Society' after the first run I repeated it and once again. it's just great to listen to, nostalgic and so varied with beautiful lyrics with a touch of irony. After that I listened to Arthur and Somewhere else, also brilliant. I found 'Sweet Lady Genevieve' what a great song, one of my favourites. And 'Artificial Man' is more current than ever. one of the best songs I know. I am happy with all these discoveries. Thank you!
Great lyrics from a storyteller like Ray Davies
