    When Moffat wrote this finale, he wanted to write himself into a corner in the first part, and then get out of it somehow in the second part. So naturally, he locked one of his leads in the perfect person, he killed the other one, and then ended the entire universe. And yet, somehow, he managed to write a second part that was, in my opinion, not just coherent, but absolutely magical.

    • @lawrencegough
      @lawrencegough 7 лет назад +26

      really? Oh well, this is the one where I think Moffat got it totally right. And even if he didn't it's still a million miles away from S3 and S4 finales, which were just gobbledigook and handwaving personified.

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 7 лет назад +17

      +infernalrain Indeed. What he basically does in this episode is create an immovable object (or perhaps several - the inescapable prison, River's situation, Amy's death) and then in the finale reminds us that in the show's universe at least, there is also an unstoppable force. The solution being what happens when the two meet.
      And then he somehow also ties it all together to make a meta-textual allegory/thank-you note for the survival and resurrection of the show itself. Which is why though the individual episode quality is variable, as a season arc series 5 is my favourite of the revamp.

    • @WolfGratz
      @WolfGratz 7 лет назад +1

      I prefer the gobbledigook. A sonic screwdriver only affects an episode whereas taking somebody out of their timeline has consequences and you shouldn't just try and ignore those consequences save where one of them can act as an immediate emotional kick. Or if you do manage to persuade us to go along with that purely for the emotional value then you really, really shouldn't pretend to be a master of complicated but consistent plotting.

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 7 лет назад +1

      +WolfGratz Careful of spoilers. Personally I don't see where that happens re: timeline but we'd need to wait until next episode to discuss it in detail (remembering that timelines become very complicated things when you routinely travel through time).
      Each to their own of course re: gobbledygook, different people have different tolerances. The S3 finale for instance is in some ways similar to the S5 finale in that both ultimately feature the power of ideas and words to change the world, it's just the execution which is (very) different.

    It's sad to think that the Doctor's attempt to improve Vincent's life may have been what ultimately led to his suicide. (By attempting to change his fate, he inadvertently became the cause of it).
    The Doctor and Amy were so loved by Vincent that when he foresaw the destruction of the TARDIS (and their presumed deaths) when creating his final painting, it would have pushed him to ending his life.

      What if instead:
      A) He saw how much he was loved and respected but his depression would not allow him to accept it and his impostor syndrome added to his feelings of inadequacy.
      B) at some point during the museum visit he caught wind of when and how he died and that through trying to trying to preserve the timeline actually gave him a sense of peace knowing that there was an end to his suffering.

    • @LadyDoomsinger
      @LadyDoomsinger 2 года назад +5

      @@rtozier2011 Struggling with chronic depression myself, I'd say applying motivations to suicide (or depression in general) is fundamentally misunderstanding exactly how awful it is; because there is no cause, there is no reason or logic to be found anywhere. Even when everything goes right, even when everybody is nice to you, even when you have no reason to feel bad - it lurks beneath the surface and may erupt.
      Some things might trigger it to come out, some things might amplify its impact, and some things might just be the straw that breaks your back; but the depression itself is not caused by any of it, the depression is just there, waiting to hit you, with or without provocation.

    Here's a run down of the episode.
    Bad guys + Pandorica = no Doctor.
    No Doctor = TARDIS + boom = no history, present, future.
    Looking back, that was probably more confusing

    • @Cybusmaster92
      @Cybusmaster92 3 года назад +3

      It gets worse.
      If the Universe never existed, then that means no Gallifrey.
      No Gallifrey means no Doctor to steal the Tardis.
      Since the Tardis doesn't get stolen, then it doesn't blow up. No boom, no universal collapse. History goes on as normal. But then we lead up to these events with the Tardis blowing up.
      The cycle repeats over and over again. Two timelines constantly cancelling each other out.
      ... Just typing this made me go cross-eyed.

      It really does begin to tail off from here on in though, this is where Moffat's writing stops being good and starts becoming self-indulgent fanwank, It doesn't immediately turn to dross at the beginning of season 6 and there is some great stuff there but by the latter half of season 7 we are into the serious nadir of Dr Who.

      @WolfGratz 7 лет назад +6

      It's perfectly possible to enjoy different seasons or episodes for different reasons. Just as you can get a lot from individual episodes or even scenes within a whole you find disappointing. An old mate of mine who sadly passed away a couple of years ago used to have a gentle word when I went into rant mode about a theatrical production. He would point out that there was always something to be got out of every performance. And then Frank would rattle off loads of stuff I'd overlooked. He was a very lovely bloke and I miss him but his wisdom remains with me (though occasionally I still get a tad carried away).

    • @Jamienomore

      DarthRushy. I have seen a small number of Reactors that, rather than sit back and enjoy an Episode, they look for faults. That's the People I feel sorry for. He remembers the Roman stuff because the Roman Rory was built from Amy’s memory. In the same way she brought back her parents by remembering them even though they never existed, she brought back the Rory she remembered. However because she met Roman Rory, who was by all purposes the original Rory just plastic, the two memories (the second literally being a copy of the first who survived and lived in a different time period) basically became one and made a Rory who remembers their adventures, dying to the slylerians, reappearing as plastic, waiting two thousand years, then waking up like he never died, but remembers it. Like how Amy remembers the angle in her eye though it never existed. He never was plastic but remembers it.
      That was probably really confusing but it’s the most logical thing I can think off.

The Stonehenge speech is great as it is but it's also a near perfect summation of Matt Smith's Doctor - "Talk very fast, hope something good happens, take the credit". He's bluffing but then the Doctor is always sort of bluffing. Until he isn't.
      And the nothing ever forgotten speech ? Well, that's the season arc right ? And part of the lovely meta-textual nod to the "wilderness years" that series 5 is partly about (oblique to avoid spoilers).
      Both typify the best of Moffat's writing IMO, they work on a few different levels.

      osumarko The only thing about the big speech is, even though it is amazing, in the context of the bad guys plan it loses some of the punch. They didn't just run away because of his speech, they had a plan all along, and they had to leave him alone with the box. Still a well written, awesome speech, but knowing what we know I just imagine all the bad guys laughing at him for not having any idea it's a trap

    Crying while shouting "What the fuck is happening?", "WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT THE FUCK?" and "I don't know how I feel about that." is what makes us whovians.

    • @WolfGratz
      @WolfGratz 7 лет назад

      Possibly but then we have to remember that the species representatives don't necessarily come from a period immediately after those we have seen. Something may have gone awry afterwards. They may be getting their retaliation in first from our point of view.

    A quick comment from Ireland you're a truly gourgous Lady with a lovely smile and warmth about you. And despite your lack of faith in yourself in the eyes of many an Irish man. Being willing to wear your 💓 for the world to see despite how at times it can be broken is a true strength of character in a woman. So I wish you nothing but happiness in your future and in Life take care God bless :)

    "What the fuck, what the fuck, what the fuck" - everyone watching this episode, tbh.
    Also YAY RORY. I loved that reaction of yours. And as always, you have the most priceless reactions to River. :D And don't worry, HOPEFULLY things will make more sense by next episode (even though I've had to rewatch it a few times to really catch on to everything).
    As for being sad about series' ending... Just take it as it comes. I know some people who didn't start to like DW until s5 and forward. I know some people who like s7 the best. I know some people who hate s5. Personally I absolutely adore s9 and s6, even though s5 is possibly my favorite, but it really depends on my mood. Everyone has very different rankings for the series'. Just let it come and see what works for you and what doesn't. :)
    I feel sorry for you that your allergies have to hit you now, when you're watching a bunch of pretty emotional episodes in a row. Good luck with that for the next one as well. Can't wait for it. Also, you've really got it down well with this editing style. It's nice!

    Great reaction, as always. Thank you. Don't be sad that you've now seen the best season, the next season is the best ... and the one after is the best too ... and, etc. LOL, Van Gogh's famous 'Big Monkey' painting. And you seemed please to see the cybermen. "Bitch, remember. Grrr!" LOL. The cyber-head was pretty scary; I wonder how many kids had nigtmares after that. And then Rory's back. Yeah! Or is he?
