Justin... I was born in Fla in the '40s and worked LEO for Hillsoborugh Co... YES, Lots of Nuts who don't really understand the dangers associated with storms of this nature...

Correct. I have had lots of people say I should have gotten out to grab it but those few seconds of grabbing an aluminum tripod standing in a puddle with bolts literally hitting the field in front of us just didn't seem worth the risk. We take enough risks driving and being near these storms as it is. Lesson learn though Rain cove always goes on camera if there is any chance the rain could slam us. - Justin Labadie

I guess we can choose to either think it through before or after it is too late. Which is best to choose?

I thought the 5D series was weather sealed. Was the damage due to the fall with the card door open which let the water in. tough break. could you film within the car with a tripod or use video or time lapse? Would insurance pay for a replacement? Maybe having a Mark II to use (B camera) would have been a better choice.

Wonder if you had pulled the battery right away and not tried to use it until it had a chance to dry if it would have lived. There is a repair guy in St Pete (The Camera Cure) who may be able to fix it cheaper than the factory.

Correct! Man I made so many newb mistakes. Although in the video it's unclear I didn't continue to use it. I was using my backup little camera the M50. I was getting a multitude of errors but I think if it ever happens in the future I will so I removed everything (Card and Battery). The problem I think lies in the fact that the lightning trigger was still firing the shutter while it was down as water was going into SD card slot allowing for it to drain into the rest of the camera.

Taken to him on your recommendation. He had great reviews. I let him know your name too :) 🤙 - Justin Labadie

And when is it ever okay to leave your camera out in the rain? There are housings you can buy for doing that.

Maybe try splaying the tripod legs one click - wider base and lower = more stable. Here’s hoping it dries out and works. Good vid. Wish I was down there. Stay safe.

Thanks dave. I (Justin) could have had them wider. I even had a sandbag on them unfortunately no match to the wind severe thunderstorm wind gust that came barreling through. The even worst part is days before I had put together a rain cover for the camera but in the heat of the moment forget to throw it on. The camera is showing no signs of life. All the mistakes I made were completely preventable and I know it. Definitely going to be wayyy more cautious in the future. Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it! 🙌

In hindsight.... the jacket only acted to catch more of the wind. :(

Yea what a terrible idea it was for me to throw it on there. 😪 Lesson learned!

So much thanks for the video. I shoot lightening only a few times a year... out here in Vegas. Just not a lot of storms roll thru all the time. And flash floods are common with lightening storms you better know where you are safe. Sorry about your D5,, shit happens. I have a 750 and I take it trail climbing with a replaced knee and neuropathy in my feet. So you know I can't feel the ground or balance we all take chances its in our blood. I shoot Area 51,, ... Nothing so far.. waiting for the mother ship,, yea right..
