I'm a pilot. There is a huge shortage of controllers right now. Glad this is happening. It does not matter where the controllers come from, if they come from off the street, the FAA will give them the same, if not better training than the colleges.
Makes sense, if you understand gaming. There are many, many types of thought processes involved in gaming, and an ability to track, memorise and concentrate on several simultaneous data streams would certainly be a mental skill that some gamers would have and use a lot. Target those people, for their ability to track complex data, and sure, makes sense that those gamers would be useful people with specific skill sets to shift into air traffic control, particularly given the way that such data is presented.
Being the wife of an ATC that’s been in for 15 years, and was hired off the street with zero experience.... I’ve come to the conclusion that NO ONE unless you’re ATC or married to one.... understands the job and how it all works. Most of these comments are ridiculous, extremely uninformed and ignorant.
@@jermainemyrn19 40 hours a week. Unless you have overtime. But there are rules. They discourage you from working more than 2 hours in position without a break. atlanta is more busy then lga fact Atlanta has held the title of world's busiest airport from 1998-2019 a 20+ year stretch Atlanta lost the title due to the pandemic but Atlanta is still the busiest airport in the us
New York is the busiest 'air space' in the nation. Air space is not the same as 'airport'. More planes fly 'through' the air space controlled by New York than the air space controlled by Atlanta.
Ok so “actively recruiting gamers”, does this mean gamers just bypass the required bachelors degree for ATC? Or do all requirements for ATC still apply with gamers being first choice because of skills?
On the site for applying, It is written "Have three years of progressively responsible work experience, or a Bachelor's degree, or a combination of post-secondary education and work experience that totals three years" under requirements.
The college degree (CTI) was basically gutted under the Obama administration. A law was passed that the agency would *have to* hire 1:1 college grads/military veterans (Pool 1) and people with 0 experience (Pool 2). Makes me wish I knew all this before graduating high school
College students can still apply. It’s just the same pool as everyone else. And just because someone passed the CTI program didn’t mean they would make a better controller than the next person. It gives you a decent foundation of the rules of the job, but the FAA is still going to teach you their way, then you have to learn facility specifics. Military veterans and CTI grads wash out just like everyone else.
They better check their mentality. When planes start crashing, the only thing their new controllers will have to say is, “Reset, Reset.” “Let me try that again.”

I have always considered it a video game. They’re just all dots on a screen and make sure they don’t hit.
That will be great. When there's a crash they can just hit reset so cool

How much do they typically work?
People just don’t know. That’s why people who do know need to answer questions and provide help in the comments. 👍
