Missed: communicate with the bass-player! Make your bass-guitar and bass-drum sync when they need to for that extra oomph. Very important lesson I've learned. The sound just get amplified to the next level when you build on the same patterns :)
That means you are a good drummer... im a guitar player and think the most important in a band is bass and drums. They support all the sound... saludos
Gabe i know u tried to make it look over busy and with 0 consideration for the song, but Daaaiiiiiiuuuuum it still sounded sick ur skill is unbelievable ur chops are amazing ! blessings bro!!!!
Biggest thing for me about playing in a band as a drummer is learning to have fun with the parts. If there was a hyped instrumental where all I was playing was a standard rock beat, I used to kinda relax in those parts as "Oh, this is an easy part, I'll use this to catch my breath" whereas now I really get into the moment. Same goes for the opposite--if it was slow, I used to be stressed about playing all the right notes whereas now I can play with feel and not overplay. Though I do have to say this--if you are a new drummer, you don't have to play a fill every four measures or before every drop--you don't even have to play a certain fill that is in a song; honestly sometimes building up then going silent is the best thing for a song, sometimes giving a good base for the guitarist to play a riff or two ultimately makes the band as a whole sound better, and if you are a drummer who can be the background where you need to be and rock while in the spotlight then know that you are in a good place.
Spot on, for me its about being tight with my bass player, also knowing what the song needs, what is the song about, knowing when to change the energy if at all.
Solid video man. Less is more with a band for sure. I had a difficult time trying to make my self realize I don’t need crazy fills all the time or at all when playing with a group.
Great video. I try to follow these rules partly because I can't do a lot of fancy stuff. Another thing that I think is important is to connect with the bass player. It really helps the foundation of the song when the bass player and the kick are in sync. Not necessarily playing the exact same rhythm, but playing together. Most bands prefer someone who can stick it in the pocket rather than a drummer who over plays. You don't have to be super fast nor have a ton of crazy fills as along as you can keep time and follow these rules.
Interesting lesson Gabe! I've been writing and recording a lot of songs with my brother (who plays guitar) and my favorite part of this concept is the energy and emotion in the song that helps me write good music
What about locking in with the bass player? Some bass players are excellent and will follow the drummer, and the drummer will in turn lock in with the bass player. But how do you play with an average bass player? Or is that something you cannot change? Well, practice I guess XD
I haven't seen the rest of your videos so, maybe you already covered this. Would be cool to see a demonstration of dynamics that are more extreme as in Blues, Ballads, etc. My band generally likes to drop the volume by half during the verse and most singing parts in general.
As a newer drummer, I find it integral and useful to know how to play out of/through mistakes, regardless if it's your mistake or another band mate's, i.e. keeping the song going if/when the vocals come in late or early, or someone misses a part. Also, it's important to bring backup equipment. Broken stick? Have some spares. Your go-to pedal breaks? Have a cheap backup waiting in the wings. Have more that one drum key...etc. Awesome vid, Gabe. Love your channel. 👍🏼🤘
Right on. You nailed it pretty good. It's a lot like getting the recipe right for a soup. Too much of "this" or not enough of "that" can make or break a song. I like being the drummer that participates with the rest of the musicians rather than showboating or being minimal in my playing. Good pointers.
These tips are all sooooo true man. When at church, you are trying to set the mood of the music and if you don't follow these steps, your band will sound pretty bad. There was a drummer who played at my church while I was injured this year and he had no dynamics whatsoever and he had a percussionist degree:/
Yeah man, you can have all the skills in the world, but if you don't understand dynamics it can lead into some trouble. It took me way too long to learn that!
Absolutely correct! the drummer needs to be more of a musician, in touch with the other instruments as well as the singers and so forth. Too many drummers are not in tune with the actual purpose of a song. Meaning, the drummer is a part of the band he or she is not the spotlight. A good knowledge of music theory and how instruments work is also helpful for drummers. Excellent lesson! Keep up the great work!
Damn it! The busy part in the song is what I was doing haha. I just got my drum kit I’m a newbie so thanks. I was playing with a Drumless track and I don’t know why I was trying so hard instead of just adding to the song.
this is my favorite lesson. i enjoyed watching a video on this topic. im working on getting into a band and now i wont spend all my time on chops thanks man!
oscar parra which drum set are you referring to kind Sir? The one in this video or mine? If it's mine I just got myself my first drum kit, it's a Pearl Vision VBA Artisan ll NY Splatter it's 2 up and one down came with free Zildjian ZBT cymbals. But I plan to upgrade it to Zildjian A Customs next year hopefully. Hope this helps, thanks.
P.S. Everything I learn here and from my drum teacher will be put to good use since I will be playing in a Church next year. That's why I need to learn alot double time. Peace everyone!
Bass player asking a drum question 2 actually 1) why does the snare most always look different from the rest of the drums and 2) is there a such thing as signature drums, like a Nicko Mcbrain signature kit?
Sometimes having that higher snare is good, like if you listen to Jay's snare in slipknot. It really suits and sounds better compared to the beefy snare...... You are right though sometimes there's a time and place for stuff like that haha. Thanks for the content Gabe love the videos!
I’m watching this since I’m a new drummer (like 6 months with classes) and some guys I know said they really needed me hahahah. It’s 6 days from today and I’m kinda scared since I’m noob lmao
Still new to drumming, went for an audition... I was so freakin nervous I think I almost put a hole in every skin on my kit. Also massive blisters, which I haven't had since I started.... Lol Dynamics... all I'm gonna say, oh well maybe next time.
I have a problem about playing in the band. I have been playing drums for 4 years and ı joined a band couple months ago. When ı playing with covers i performing perfect but when in the band my hi hat rythm slowing down. Do you have any advice?
8 лет назад+1
When you are in band, you need to think in the sound of the band. When alone, you need to think in your sound. Just that, and too many drummers don't get it! Here in my church we are 4 drummers, and we have our cronogram of who plays when, so... 2 of us are very good drummers, but they are really don't get what the rest of band ask them. Very complicated... sorry for bad english.
more keys to playing in a band.... creating space for others, filling space when needed...when I drum in the pocket and only hylight essential accents, play less buisy or rest completely, this creates Space for a lead player to step out. My bass player loves it. If you want to play more seductive music... Rests and Space are powerful tools. .
One more thing... If drummers would concentrate on learning and perfecting the 40 PASIC rudiments, fills will become much more natural and grooves will be easier to embellish without affecting the pulse.
Great job !!! you pretty much covered everything but u forgot to mention that is important to follow the melody or bass line of bass player.... really luv ur work awoesum as always😃😃😃
I'm late but think of it this way, dont play following a click, play with the click. Act like your making the click play with you. Relax and lay back and play the beat man! Once you cant hear the click for some reason, that's when u got it perfect! Good luck man
Is that a Music app that you're playing on your laptop? And If it is what is it called? I need To practice with that .This was an amazing video I play in a band and you Got it Right!
Thank you for making this. I'm 17, been playing for almost 8 years now, and have seen very few videos like this online that cover the most important part of drumming, and all music in general; listening. Drums are just as musical as any other v instrument. We cover the whole frequency range, so we need to be mindful, tasteful, and respectful of the song and our fellow musicians. One of my favorite drumming channels online, keep it up
Well, it's nothing drum related .. But being polite, cool, having a good feeling with your band mates is prior to a lot of "technical" stuff :) But drumming wise, you've nailed it dude !!!! And of course Timing if you're not playing to a click... Being able to keep a constant time is super important
Hi. i'm a filipino, been learning your lessons gab and it actually improve my abilities in drumming. thanks for that, i just want to know if you have a lessons for making your hands faster? or an exercise so that i can apply it? thank you for reading
:) Thanks a lot Gabe. This lesson helps me and many more so, so much!! Personally I was really searching for videos that talk/show about drumming in a band specifically .. you're the only one to do that I've found so Great job!! and Thank you 😁 (Greetings from India :3)
Awesome. I've used the 5AX a few times. I typically don't need the extra reach so the 5A suits me fine. Thanks for the quick reply and the awesome drum lessons via RUclips. Keep up the great work.
Ha...stop playing the drums during set up? Drummers just have to bash their cymbals when you are trying to tune. It's like they sense it. "It looks like he's tuning his guitar, I think my best move would be to start a crash cymbals test!"
this really shows that you are actually a good drummer. you understand your job is to keep the beat and play to the music and not just show off
+Cheifbarfy Thanks friend!
From a beginner, thanks to you i kinda jumped up, joined a band, and we are making a gig for about two weeks, thank you so much dude :)
That's so awesome Phill! Great work dude!
What’s ur band called I’ll like to check it out have u posted any music online
Gabe's been hitting the bench presses.
HAHAHA
TheExtremeDrummer what makes you say that?
Missed: communicate with the bass-player! Make your bass-guitar and bass-drum sync when they need to for that extra oomph. Very important lesson I've learned. The sound just get amplified to the next level when you build on the same patterns :)
+ThaTyger Absolutely! I totally agree
Drumming in my opinion is an accompaniment.
As a drummer I'm entirely fine being in the back of the stage.
Absolutely!
That means you are a good drummer... im a guitar player and think the most important in a band is bass and drums. They support all the sound... saludos
I agree but sometimes I think guitarists think their also the main show and sometimes they also need to take backstage
Gabe i know u tried to make it look over busy and with 0 consideration for the song, but Daaaiiiiiiuuuuum it still sounded sick ur skill is unbelievable ur chops are amazing ! blessings bro!!!!
+ivan hita Hahaha thanks Ivan!
This video is an absolute gem! This shows that you’re not only a good drummer but also a good musician!!

If you turn on captions you can see RUclips really enjoys his playing
yeah!
these are so true! you should do a lesson on super odd time signatures!
Solid video man. Less is more with a band for sure. I had a difficult time trying to make my self realize I don’t need crazy fills all the time or at all when playing with a group.

I totally agree Brad!
Brother tip number 2 is awesome, thanks so much (from now on only big cymbals, lol).
Always a great lesson. Thanks Gabe.
Interesting lesson Gabe! I've been writing and recording a lot of songs with my brother (who plays guitar) and my favorite part of this concept is the energy and emotion in the song that helps me write good music
Yeah man, that's the best!
Not gonna lie the stack on the "small cymbal example" sounded sick but
Hahaha
Great on the keys as always I enjoyed your video sir you pretty much covered everything
So glad you liked it Donald!
Ya man I also play at church and you need dynamics to play in a band
number 1 .. very true advice brother .. sometimes less is more
What about locking in with the bass player? Some bass players are excellent and will follow the drummer, and the drummer will in turn lock in with the bass player. But how do you play with an average bass player? Or is that something you cannot change? Well, practice I guess XD
not just practice, good timing training helps with that.
Yeah, that's true. Thinking about it, timing is so important.
Everyone in a band should train with a klick.. even singer :) Good timing makes music so natural
Yeah. That's good. I may look to help implement that at my home church. Thank you!
tell me about it my husband is the bass player and I'm the drummer ,you would think we would lock in all the time but he frustrates me sometimes lol
Gabe you're the best.
I haven't seen the rest of your videos so, maybe you already covered this. Would be cool to see a demonstration of dynamics that are more extreme as in Blues, Ballads, etc. My band generally likes to drop the volume by half during the verse and most singing parts in general.
Wow the sounds also smooth
Thank you for helping us...the little beginners....it helps alot and we thank you!
you so welcm, good sir.

Those are some great tips as well! Thanks Brandon!
If your vocalist comes in late your early get a new vocalist 😂😂
this kid really knows what he is talking about...nice set-up to.
Thank you!
Very sensible lesson
Solid...definitely informational and it makes sense.
I can't stop watching... Great video Gabe
+Helena Gomez Thanks Helena!

The “way too much section” sounded so good! 😂
Thank you so much! cool tips
You are very welcome Tomm!
Really cool this lesson Gabe
Thank you!
Great tips! I hope to be able to join a band once uni starts!
So glad you liked the lesson! Heck yeah dude, you got this!
Thanks bro for the great ideas!
My pleasure!
3:25 I NEED TO LEARN THAT
who would use hihat cybals as crashes though?
+Leotardoification That's just to illustrate using very small cymbals when the song calls for a bigger sound.
Nice drum drum
Sometimes having that higher snare is good, like if you listen to Jay's snare in slipknot. It really suits and sounds better compared to the beefy snare...... You are right though sometimes there's a time and place for stuff like that haha. Thanks for the content Gabe love the videos!
I agree! You always have to try to fit the song the best that you can. Thanks Bruce!
this was very helpful! Thanks Gabe :)
My pleasure!
great tips!
Thanks!
I’m watching this since I’m a new drummer (like 6 months with classes) and some guys I know said they really needed me hahahah. It’s 6 days from today and I’m kinda scared since I’m noob lmao
You rock Dude
Not as much as you do!
Awesome Video !
thank you!
Joining jazz band in highschool i have a drum set at home and i need to play for the band
great lesson, :D
So glad you liked it!

+Michael Munro Auditions can be really scary! Don't stress someone saying no to you, just let it motivate you to improve even more for the next one!
3:35 what fills is this?
Great vid dude. Great info and examples. 👍🏻👊🏻💪🏼
Thank you!

What was that small sabian cymbal you were using for the bright small crash?

I often rest just before a high energy part...then drop the BOMB
or creshendo a bit before bringing her down for a verse...sensuous
Love these!
be respectful and open to try new things to band mates
This is why i hate people saying casey's drum coverr are overplayed! He never even overplayed when playing in a live setting or with a band
One more thing... If drummers would concentrate on learning and perfecting the 40 PASIC rudiments, fills will become much more natural and grooves will be easier to embellish without affecting the pulse.
strongly agree with you there Sir!
Very cool video . I thought this was really helpful :)
Glad to hear it dude!
Tuning 👍👍
Wow that's amaizing, keep doing this videos, I used to learn and teach my padawan 👍🏻
Thank you bro!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you again!
Great lesson Gabe! Is the play along song that starts at 6:20 still available to download anywhere? The link in the description no longer works.
Great job !!! you pretty much covered everything but u forgot to mention that is important to follow the melody or bass line of bass player.... really luv ur work awoesum as always😃😃😃
Absolutely! Playing along with the bass is always important. Thanks Lenon!
Hey buddy quick question I am having a hard time playing with a click. Can you give me some tricks/advice to keep proper timing?
I'm late but think of it this way, dont play following a click, play with the click. Act like your making the click play with you. Relax and lay back and play the beat man! Once you cant hear the click for some reason, that's when u got it perfect! Good luck man

gosto bastante dos seus vídeos, parabéns. pena eu não falar em inglês

You could learn from this, Buddy Rich!
Oh wait…
Well, it's nothing drum related .. But being polite, cool, having a good feeling with your band mates is prior to a lot of "technical" stuff :)
But drumming wise, you've nailed it dude !!!! And of course Timing if you're not playing to a click... Being able to keep a constant time is super important
I completely agree! Being a solid person is #1!
Hi. i'm a filipino, been learning your lessons gab and it actually improve my abilities in drumming. thanks for that, i just want to know if you have a lessons for making your hands faster? or an exercise so that i can apply it? thank you for reading
+Dee 47 I'm so glad you are enjoying the lessons! I don't have any yet, but I will!
left>right :)
hey man great videos! will you do any tutorials on blast beats/death metal drumming techniques?
Thank you! Probably at some point!
:) Thanks a lot Gabe. This lesson helps me and many more so, so much!! Personally I was really searching for videos that talk/show about drumming in a band specifically .. you're the only one to do that I've found so Great job!! and Thank you 😁
(Greetings from India :3)
I'm so glad it helped you Rajdeep!
Hey Gabe, thanks for the awesome advice. I agree with you 100%. What model of VF sticks do you use?
Thanks Larry! I use Vic Firth Extreme 5A's. They are just slightly longer than regular 5A's
Awesome. I've used the 5AX a few times. I typically don't need the extra reach so the 5A suits me fine. Thanks for the quick reply and the awesome drum lessons via RUclips. Keep up the great work.
What is the tape on the snare for ?
Just to reduce some of the overtones of the snare.
Ha...stop playing the drums during set up? Drummers just have to bash their cymbals when you are trying to tune. It's like they sense it. "It looks like he's tuning his guitar, I think my best move would be to start a crash cymbals test!"
Haha classic.
Were you playing a Kevlar head on your snare in this vid? Or was it a black chrome head? Either way the tuning is wonderful. Well done man! Great vid
It's the Evans Black Hydraulic head. So glad you liked it!
