As cool as the fight was, I feel like there was so much missing (like the context of Raphtalia and Filo’s new abilities) and time spent with the familiar, that the victory felt sorta… empty. Anyone else?
Cause they skipped the build-up. The training they got lead to this by epic battle with a giant soul stealing tortoise. This battle would have been the pay-off to their training. But we got no training so it's like the tortoise came out of nowhere and there was nothing to pay-off so it was just pointless battle.
Yeah, the directing decision to cut so much build up was almost definitely done for pacing issues and it's hurting the show a bit.
When you think about how Aninews mentioned how long it took Naofumi to get here, then you compare it to the anime, it makes it look like Naofumi defeated the Spirit Tortoise in less than a week.

Watching these videos is such a bittersweet experience. I want to know what I missed and have better understanding of the true events of the story however, when I find out how much the show has changed I'm left disappointed in episodes a week or 2 ago I thought were fairly entertaining. Keep up the good work I'm looking forward to next weeks episode.

9:12 THANK YOU for explaining the size of the Spirit Tortoise. I was anticipating something truly colossal in size; a creature whose immensity made it virtually unstoppable due to its mass. Yet in the anime it seems relatively small and not as threatening. In short, I was expecting something at least 1/3 the size of The Rumbling from AOT, and while the manga delivers a creature that fits that expectation the anime did not.
It’s sad, this season was so hyped but even as an anime only I can tell it’s being rushed. Then I see how much they missed makes me not even want to finish the season. It’s still not as bad as like Promised Neverland S2 but still
I didn't read it but this anime season feels pretty off and not even close to the quality of the first. I'm glad I at least follow this channel to get some better aspects of the story.
It seems like they were trying to cash in the success of the first season even though that also had a lot of content cut on it as well. Things such as these really make me question whether to watch it. I hate having to look over the skipped contents since it changes pretty much the pace and context of a lot of scenes.
@@blacklight1104 Doubtful, if anything they're trying to get through the Spirit Tortoise arc, because it just isn't very good. The training was the best part of it. And that might have been an episode at best and probably one they're going to flashback to.
The Promised Neverland season 2 devolved as the episodes progressed until it eventually became a slideshow
@@LupineShadowOmega I remember it was a pretty epic arc. The fight against the turtle was hype af in the Web Novel at least.
They also could've done a Slime-style season of the long city building part imo.
Seeing how well shield hero s1 did i expected s2 to be done even better. Instead we get a rushed, convoluted mess with at best mid animation and at worse literal ps2 graphics. They literally have the successful source material to go off and they still fuck it up
I think some people are forgetting that Season 1 had its fair share of bad looking CGI and animation too
Also, they had to change it a bit because they need to shorten it and because they put the village rebuilding before the fight with the tortoise and some other changes.

11:53 another cool detail is that he swapped to the soul eater shield because he thought the electricity would counter his whale core shield because he got it from a whale/water enemy
8:00 or so - at least in the anime, Naofumi has _consistently_ portrayed himself, to his inner monologue, as this selfish person who is only doing what he has to for his own selfish needs. He does this in a manner very much "protesting too much," finding increasingly-stretched excuses for why good deed after good deed is actually just him fooling people and being, if not evil, then at least totally in it only for himself.
The shift to wanting to live up to the expectations of those who've looked up to him is massive growth for him as a character, allowing himself to recognize consciously - to admit - that he cares about those people and cares what they think of him.
I see the post-speech claims of it all being lies and bluffs and manipulation to be backsliding on his part into the excuse-making to downplay his heroism. He does not see himself as heroic, and he's more afraid of seeing himself that way than he is of being hated, possibly because he still thinks that he'll be hated no matter what so it costs him nothing.

Yeah, really hoping for that. I mean they had quite the extended time with Covid, I couldn’t see how they could’ve perhaps made a little nudge to the right direction here and there In the anime story line.
@@jmsunday yeah, Magia Record "Season 3" (4 episodes from the season 2 budget) wasn't perfect by a long shot but what they were able to do with all that visual novel content was a magic trick (pun Intended)
I know it's the writing equivalent of a heart transplant, but magical girl shows shouldn't be the only ones who can handle budget cut rewrites.
Worst case scenario is an ending thats handled so badly it ruins the journey like GoT.

Its such a shame. Season 1 was so good and I dont understand how season 2 ended up so rushed with how much time they had. They spirit tortoise size is inconsistent, the fights are slow, the plot is skipping everything. I really hope it improves because season 1 was in my top 10 favorite animes and it hurts to watch now

Overextension. Two seasons greenlit at once but each one is 12 eps and there's a big push to get it out for the Fandom. They should have taken more time
It is a setup arc, and the community bitched a lot about it being slow (which is kinda dumb, given that the Q ten lo arc is even worse). That’s why they are trying to rush it.

As much as I was bummed about the first two episodes and the missing content, I actually feel episodes 3-4 were a step in the right direction. Good animation with the fight and familiars, you get to see the impact of “war” and you get set up for the whats to come next. Still a lot of work to be done but a step in the right direction.

after the decapitation of the turtle we see it regenerating instantly making it even scarier
So much like how in Season 1 Naofumi discovered if you believe your weapon can do something it unlocks that ability. If Naofumi believes in the power of his shield it can nearly block any attack. 🛡

It's like the director was so focused on "Turtle arc not good" that they rushed it to the extent that the plot has gone from okay to awful.
Unfortunately it'll probably sour following arcs.

It’s hilarious that the world of Shield Hero is similar to that of a fantasy game, because we have all the different types of “gamers” here. Naofumi is obviously the gamer that’s doing all the side quests. Ren is the gamer that likes to exploit the game. Motoyasu is the gamer that likes to flex whenever there’s a girl. And, Itsuki is the gamer that skips all the dialogue to get to the action
The amount of changes made from the source is so much more than what I could've thought.
Didn't even get to see the blast from the slighlty big Tortoise, having Naofumi help with cutting it's head off kind of stuns what growth we could've expected from Raphtalia and Filo, I don't care for Ostu at all she hasn't done or said anything that makes me care for her, Naofumi from what these past few videos has said feels like his own character (especially the scene where he confronts Bow boy) where now he feels like a self insert in S2, we haven't gotten to see any actual improvements for Naofumi yet, and all his party members. They are just telling us "they've gotten stronger" but I would've have loved to see naofumi using multiple shield effects ya know showing us not telling us.
Despite all this I am still looking forward to the next episode, he wasn't around for long but I loved L'arc, and I hope they were speeding to episode 5 because they'll slow down the pace since we have characters that I think we are invested in already, and don't hate like the half moon stick with string boy, who calls himself bow hero

Love the videos cause they are definitely needed. I forgot most of the smaller details for this arc and are they just rushing through this to get to the next arc? I agree the new world arc is one of the better ones but unlike most people I really enjoyed the spirit tortoise arc and all the training that went along with it. I really hope they plan to slow down a bit.

I guess with how different season 2 from the light novels is, we won't get any more episodes.
I know the LN calls it 'shooting star' for the different skills using this name (remember that it is more than just the shield that has one of these), but remember that is the same LN that calls "hundred swords". "hand red swords". Immediately before going on to describe how its a shitton of swords conjured up in the attack.
Given that "meteor" is a fairly prevalent name for different attacks/magic/skills/whathaveyou in JRPGs and their official English translations (when one is needed), I think we can safely use that instead of 'shooting star'.
(not that it matter in a fictional setting but just to note, meteor is technically correct in English just as 'bolide" is the actual name for so-called 'fireballs'.)
caveat: working with what I know from games and the real world (as I stated), as well as the actual English releases for the LNs and the subs for the anime.
Even though I read the manga, I still like watching these videos
I haven’t seen any episodes since the first one. Knowing that first episodes are usually the best, I dipped out knowing the whole season would be incredibly disappointing
While the fight was nice to see some of the old character from S1, this fight completely miss what made the Spirit Tortoise actually threatening to their party. That without Ost there they didn't knew How to counter the gravity magic yet and was under Naofumis barrier while it Launched it's "Hyper Beam" Twice. That and Eclair was in place of ost for that fight in particular. That fight was suppose to be a win for them, but the beginning of a even bigger trouble as Ost reappears shortly after.
Urgh, the localization of the manga irk me. Raptalia called Naofumi as Mr. Naofumi rather than maybe master Naofumi. I would rather have it remain as Naofumi-sama to show the respect she gives, maybe "sir" would be better.

As much as I love and appreciate your videos, the anime is easy to understand and follow for those who care to do so.
First time I'm actually miffed for the stuff they skipped. I'm assuming there's some crazy balls to the wall fight later if they flat out changed such an important fight...
I read the manga 2 years ago and I remember even LN and Manga have different directions. In the manga, the turtle's head has already cut off by Vessels Weapon hero gang before Naofumi and the collation army's first battle.
I was wondering why the battle in the anime seemed so underwhelming. I remembered it being much different in the LN. Man, no wonder people apparently hated the first 6 episodes of this season. And with the change they made to episode 7 (as I'm sure you've been bombarded by news with), seems like it's going even more downhill.
I'm not as privy to the Overlord adaptation and how much it skipped, but this one definitely seem comparable to "A Certain Magical Index"s 3rd season, which was terrible even from an anime-only's perspective. I'm all for leaving out certain details for the sake of time, but it really sucks how even in 2022, anime adaptations try to blitz through the series to get to the "good part", ruining what was already a great story.

I think OVAs would have added to the confusion because we would've told about stuff out of order, I personally believe the Spirit Tortoise ark could have lasted until Ep 10 and we could have ended when they got out of the never-ending Labyrinth to fill out the remining 3 EPs.

I started reading the light novel after watching your CC video on Cal Mira Arc. I didn't think much about Season 2, but after your analysis I am very worried for the series as a whole. I wonder how they will adapt the "Rebuilding Arc" of volume 10 (#2 in my fav Shield Hero Volumes). My safest bet would be that they can make it into an OVA, but that's also by a longshot.

This season is just extremely disappointing. I didn't think I would drop something so fast
I can understand what they were trying to do with the fight in the anime, but the drastic changes really annoyed me.
They clearly wanted Ost and the Coalition Army to play bigger roles than they did in the novels, but it pretty much came at the expense of Naofumi's party having a good showing.
I'd be overjoyed if there wasn't another chat around a campfire moment. There was 3 or 4 so far and they wouldn't have been necessary if they didn't rush Rishia's joining or if they weren't trying to make Ost more involved with Naofumi's party.

Hey did u see that in anime version of this anime when sprite tortoise appeared there was a hour glass with no. 7 on it and there were 7 stars surrounding it so is it relates to other heroes like glassy
So wait if the Spirit Tortoise is essentially the Genbu of this world, does this mean there's a Suzaku, Byakko and Seriyu as well. That would make sense.

Was Naofumi's first human "sacrifice" to the shield in the spirit turtle arc or sometime later?
I don't remember the characters but from what i do remember it was something about a girl demihuman getting torn in half and then asking Naofumi to absorb her into the shield but that's about it.
I can't find it any where so i'm asking You instead.

That person was Sacrifice after the Spirit Tortious fight. It was the next of the 4 Beast (S) as he was save by her When it did Self-Destruct and He'd almost lost to it. This was in Vol. 15 and continues into Vol. 16 in which we have one of the best Redemption arcs of the series (yes trash). Also it's even sadder because Her and Trash was related (Uncle and Niece) and one of the planners was Bitch (Cousins).

It's my favourite part of the story because of how deep the entire thing was, the lore for legendary weapons is even wierder after we realised there's no major difference between humans and monsters.
I'm definitely going to re-read the entire series from vol.15-vol.16.
This is why I have 20 volumes for this series so I know I'm not missing anything

@@MrLucario18 6:50 to 11:30 is Symphony of Boreal Wind. If you like that one I recommend checking out the rest of Genshin's music. There are so many good songs. Some of my other favorites include Another Hopeful Tomorrow (though I wish it wasn't so short), Dawn Winery Theme, and Caelestinum Finale Termini. I haven't played recently though so any of the new regional music isn't in my playlists.

The fact that with enough time to prepare while still being on the battlefield FILO and Raphtalia are able to kill such a humongous monster just baffle me ! They are MENACES !!!
