"So You're Just Out Here Filming For No Reason"

  • On this video we did some documenting with our cameras on the public sidewalk outside this hotel. It wasn't extremely busy while we were recording the entry/exit of the property with a few cars coming & going. We were approached by two hotel employees stating that some hotel guests were feeling uncomfortable due to our recording & telling us that we were not allowed to continue recording. The two hotel employees retreated back inside. Of course we continued doing what we were doing after they went inside. About 10-15 minutes later to our surprise, two police patrol cars pulled into the entry. Both officers made contact with us & began explaining that they got a call due to our activity . Officer Magana seemed to have a bit of an attitude stating that we were filming for no reason. We informed both officers before Magana made his comment, that we have multiple reasons for recording but did not care to explain to them what those reasons were. I decided to then turn the tables on the officers using the same dialogue various police departments use on citizens. I asked the officers to remove their hands from their pockets for citizen safety not knowing if they had any weapons in their pockets. The other officer Guliani, asked my partner I was recording with to please take a few steps back because he didn't know if the camera would be used as a weapon towards him. My partner stated there was nothing to worry about since the two officers were the ones with weapons on them (guns & tasers) . They proceeded inside to speak with the hotel staff. When they came back out, the two officers got in their patrol cars & drove off without further incident.
Feel free to chime in below in the comment section with your thoughts on this one. I personally give the hotel a fail for ultimately calling police over a lawful activity. As always, thanks for watching & tuning in to the channel !

Put a request in for the body camera video from when they talk to the complainant. As far as I'm concerned this is what they should've told them,: those gentlemen are not breaking the law, if you ignore them you would be better off then if you engage them. There is no expectation of privacy in public and the proof of that is the fact that you are videoing your guests and everyone out on the sidewalk or everyone who drives through this entrance.

    Small bit of trivia info:
Years back (yes I’m old😂) when security cameras were taking off, there was court cases about the company’s cameras invading public property. Back then companies couldn’t have security cameras pointing to include the public sidewalks/streets. But then with bank ATMs being on the sidewalks in front of banks, with security cameras, suddenly the laws were changed. Deciding that there was ‘No Privacy in Public’. Which is why a citizen taking pictures or videos is completely acceptable and legal.
*These court cases were in Canada, but I believe it’s similar rulings that the US is operating under.

That's what's ironic. EVERYONE going ANYWHERE gets filmed dozens of times. That means at every single intersection, in front of every building, every business and then multiple times once at their destination; whether that's a government building, private business. store, gas station, whatever. That Sheraton has probably ten cameras just for the lobby. One for each elevator, and then every 30 feet in every hall and stairwell. THEN these same people who are filmed dozens of times before they get to the Sheraton freak out over two men with cameras.

It is not for "No Reason"! It is to see how many people are triggered to stupidly react negatively to a lawful activity. Unfortunately our uniformed law enforcement heroes are usually the first to appeal on behalf of someone's uncomfortable feelings! (and not the law!)

It was nice of Guliani to say the quiet part out loud: they fear cameras as much as blades or bullets.
I'm sure Sidewalks is a great guy, but it's a shame that he's so reflexively brusque. It's a sharp contrast from your conduct, and why I watch you, rather than him.

As the encounter with the officers was consensual (you were not being detained or under arrest), the officers were free to walk away if they felt uncomfortable with you being close to them. By trying to command Sidewalks22 on where he was allowed to be while talking to them took the officers dangerously close to an illegal detainment. In addition, as it was consensual, you, too, were permitted to have your hand in your pocket.
Next time, ask the officer if the encounter is consensual. After confirmation, tell the officer that any further conversation is unwanted and will be considered harassment.

How cool would it have been if the photographers requested the body cam footage of the cops disappointing the hotel staff by informing them that as law enforcement officers they cannot infringe upon the rights of a US citizen and prevent them from filming in public? 😉
