    thanks for demonstrating. we have a lot of decaying wood matter half a mile back from the house and this seems like an excellent use for it.

    the wood is everywhere if you start looking for it. people trim trees constantly, tree trimming businesses have dumptruck loads of chips they have to dispose of. you can grow on chips and logs if you are clean. just don't use old or rotten wood, obviously. peace

    oak is the best wood to use but it takes longer than other woods.

    purpdrank83 - if you want to grow shiitake mushrooms you need wood that is live i.e. a live tree which has been cut down. If you use already decaying wood then you won't get the results you want.
