Clay shrinks when it’s fired, so does that mean he has to tune them just below-key enough that when they’re fired and shrink, they end up exactly on key?

I use to make these by hand out of clay studied flute pitches to learn how to make them sound good was taking classes for sculpture and pottery making but enjoyed making these wish I still had the first one I made it was perfect sure I could still do it
It's amazing to me how ocarinas used to be a simple circle shape, a few holes on top and one for each thumb on the back, primarily pentatonic scales. Then Legend of Zelda featured an ocarina that could play 12 tones, a range a bit over and under an octave, "sweet potato" shaped to look better on the character... and now it's that new form that's standardized the instrument and has kept it in modern culture. The ocarina is one of the beautiful ways video games have affected art as a whole.
Actually 12 hole ocarinas had just become popular in Japan before Legend of Zelda was produced. Sojiro Nomura, a musician, ocarina producer, and ocarina player had been feature in a soundtrack to a nature documentary about the Great Yellow River in China. 12 hole ocarinas were first produced by Aketagawa, one of the earliest ocarina makers in Japan decades earlier. However, this style of ocarina was invented in 1853 in Budrio, Italy. They just tended to produce them with between 8 and ten holes (occasionally with multiple chambers to extend the range- a practice which is still very common in ocarinas today.)
@@marymoocow1276 You do realize the only reason the 12 note ocarina is as popular today is because of Zelda, right? Italy invented it after after attempting to adapt the South American instrument for European music/ musicians. The fact that it sat for over a century before finding an audience proves it's niche had commercially failed. The fact that South America didn't incorporate the "new" ocarina proved there was no need for it in traditional music. They were content with their own ocarina forms. So yes, many people worked on it over the years for many purposes, but the reason most people hear "ocarina" and the sweet potato shape is what comes to mind? Directly due to Zelda's cultural impact. They didn't invent it for the game, the same way they didn't invent a harp; Nintendo clearly referenced something existing. But without the game can you honestly say that a specific non-indigenous ocarina is now a household instrument name worldwide?
@@Undomaranel I mean in the U.S.A that's currently true to an extent, but it's been popular in the U.S.A. before, once again without Zelda. It never really sat around without any audience especially now that it's been embraced in several South-east asian countries for decades, and of course South Americans didn't replace their ocarinas with the classical- they have are separate instruments with entirely distinct musical functions/purpose. What you say is true, but there's also a lot more behind it 😊
Interesting how the ocarina is so synonymous with Japan despite it being an Italian instrument, the modern one anyway. Apparently it’s more of a pre colonial American instrument, though
