You can use it any way you like. It will increase vibrancy is it goes over other reds but it's formulated to go over pale base coats for traditional contrast painting. ✌
Hi Mike, we are using Artis Opus drybrushes! Generally I use Series D Medium and Small for space marines,. Prefer larger brushes, but you need access between legs, under arms, etc. store.artis-opus.com/
I got told by GW that contrast medium works better in humid conditions, and lahmian is better in dry environments. So he recommended I use contrast medium because I'm in the UK.
This is super interesting and something I completely forget.😊 I tend to use contrast but I haven't put too much thought into it if I'm honest. Do you know the reason behind it?
Hi, loving these guides and have a series d set winging it's way as we speak. Just wanted to ask tho, how would you do a cherry red like this? I can't work out which order would be best to go purple to red or vice versa
Hey dude, thanks for your purchase.😊 Red with a purple glaze works well, you can also do some really interesting stuff putting transparent red gloss over gold. The finish is important - satin varnish is a great help. Good luck!
I posted this comment under your coloured metalics tutorial but thought I would here as well. I was wondering how to go about making a metalic red armour for my Stormcast and was wondering what silver I could use to base (only have Leadbelcher but am more then willing to spend if anything else will work better) and what red contrast/glaze/wash is recommended to then go over that silver? Any help would be appreciated 😊
Great video I learned alot. I am looking at these techniques for Blood Knights. How do you think this would work on larger panels? For example the armour on the steeds.
Use a painting handle. You can buy them from various manufacturers, but I use wooden spools from a hobby store, and poster tack to stick the model to the spool.
Just let the paint dry on there. That’s what it’s for! Byron has mentioned in prior videos that when his palette gets all covered in paint he sprays it with a black primer as a “reset,” you can see it in this video.
Totally agree with you on contrast paints, they truly shine when you use them with other techniques! Plus it's so satisfying to apply them and see the effects you worked on right away.
Thank you for this tutorial. I spent most of yesterday trying to decide if I was going to paint with bold pyrrole red and got nothing done. I’ve decided I like the look of it after all.
Another really helpful video. I’d love to see you tackle airbrush stencils using the series D. I’ve got some ideas I wanna try, but I’d love to see your approach!
Thanks a lot, Allan! That's a great idea! I got some really cool stencils for mottled skin and other organic patterns, they're very fine... I wonder if they could work with hairy brushes😁
@@ArtisOpus sounds cool. I reckon you could also get some really cool Harlequin effects, or camouflage effects on bigger minis with bigger and more rigid stencils.
I recently got back into Battletech and wanted a luxuriantly bright and deep red for my mechs. I primed them yellow and went over that with Vallejo brass. I'd got the idea from an old episode of Top Gear. Clarkson was reviewing the Disco Volante, a coach built Alpha Romeo. He said they'd underpainted it gold to make the red richer. He was right. I can send you a few process pics if you like.
Excellent video as always Byron. All great techniques for my Space Wolves shoulder pads. Thanks again for all of your tutorials and hard work. Keep it up and look forward to seeing the next one soon
I've never been a fan of drybrushing as a technique other than for basing and terrain, but after watching several of your videos with these brushes I'm buying a set of these brushes and try to up my dry-rbushing game.
Omg dry brushing is an awesome technique. When i first did a dry brush i was very surprised and happy with the results. My first drybrush was a Beholder mini i painted black then dry brushed red and it came out amazing
Great video. If you ever make another Space Marine tutorial, it would be awesome if you could give Crimson Fists a go. They are my brother’s favorite chapter, and it would be great to have a video for reference when I get to painting him up some guys.
Great suggestion! Until I started painting Space Marines I was under the impression that Crimson Fists were just Ultramarines with one red hand😅When we return to the power armour they'll definitely get some love😊
Thanks for the tip about a warm mini. Total common sense but not if you don't think about it. Explains a few things, I should have been able to put 2 and 2 together.
Awesome! How many of those shields do you go through though?! Haha And I have to agree about contrast paints, I think they're so useful for a variety of things more than just the all in one tool that GW marketed them as - From tinted metallic schemes to glazing like you did here, they're awesome for loads of stuff. Vallejo Game Color Gory Red is an awesome red by the way, I often use that as my base followed by Evil Suns Scarlett to get a really popping colour at the end.
I discovered your videos today and am loving the content! I am heavily thinking about incorporating these techniques in my next project! I'd love to see your ideas with more organics like Tyranids or Orruks.
Amazing, buddy, thanks so much for your support! 🤩Good idea, it's definitely a colour I've not experimented much with at all. I'll need to do some testing first!
The quickest and easiest way I have found to get a super bright, bold red quickly is to use a pink primer, which I mixed from Vallejo surface primers, the red brown and the grey, which is more like an off white anyway, then I pre-shade the recesses and edges of raised details with brown and because red paints tend to be quite transparent, so you get some instant basic shadows and highlights because the pink really makes gives the red some more punch!
That sounds super interesting and makes absolute sense! Vince has a large minis tutorial where he wet blends and glazes red which I watched yesterday and that has some interesting stuff using transparency. Insightful as ever, thanks so much Simon! 😊Hope you're doing well mate!
Have you tried an ink glaze? Inks can really punch up a color. The matte varnish will dull anything down a bit, but if you intensify your reds with an ink glaze first, it should still look more vibrant than the rest of the model.
@@jonathancapps1103 yes but ink recesses into the venue's m crevices alot and fills detail... and also doesn't cover flat surfaces super consistently... an air gun would change that though I suppose
@@LoftOfTheUniverse you can mix it with a glaze medium or GW's Lahmian Medium. Also, after loading your brush, blot it on a paper towel before applying it to your mini. That will help you maintain control and keep it from running where you don't want. You can also just mix a bit of the ink in with whatever red paint you're using to intensify it's tone.
Arrived here looking for a way to improve the bright red escape tower on a Mercury capsule. Found this very helpful, thank you and subscribed!
How do i use the red contrast for my blood angels...do i paint the red base coat first or contrast? Can i use the contrast like a red wash/highlight?
You can use it any way you like. It will increase vibrancy is it goes over other reds but it's formulated to go over pale base coats for traditional contrast painting. ✌
Hello
What kind of dry brush are you using ? Also is it the same you would use for space marine armor?
Thanks mike

@@ArtisOpus I’m afraid I don’t. Presumably to do with their formula and how they dry.

I am a sloppy painter🤭
You contaminated the medium! Aaaaaaaaagh

Is there anything that you don't drybrush? :)
His right hand, probably 😂
Nice one Harrison 😁😁😁

On larger models I always end up rubbing off paint when holding them while painting other parts on it how do you get around this?
Use a painting handle. You can buy them from various manufacturers, but I use wooden spools from a hobby store, and poster tack to stick the model to the spool.
I just bought a texture pad do you clean it after use and if so how??

Exactly Harrison! I just spray mine black and go again 😊
I’m seeing red that people haven’t appeased the algorithm. Click like and follow now!
Red was a nightmare for me to clean from my brush. Will try that edge highlighting of the palette. Cheers!
It's a really good tip that I use very frequently. Hope it worked out well for you!😊

They are truly amazing, got to love that potency 😁
Great stuff as always! I’d love to see how you go about doing red cloaks. #drybrushmasterrace
Good question! And something I have zero experience with, I'll need some practise!

making me want to see a deal for some series D brushes with some monument paints. "Byron's choice" it could be called

pink primer is great for yellows too. Once you put the first layer of yellow on, you have a nice warm white + red + yellow = orange hue to start from

The first shield just screams Khorne :)
😁Blood for the blood God 🩸
I can't decide which of the two reds I like more
😁
Awesome!
Thanks!
I love red. How do you keep Red vibrant when using matte varnish? It seems less "red" compared to satin and gloss
