We are all very biased too in a good way. It depends so much on how it gets promoted. She is wonderful but most people haven’t heard of her.

I am surprised that I haven’t heard anyone analyze the lyrics from the perspective of Angelina stepping into the shoes and singing the voice of the person who hurt her; that she was the kind person who the bad Valentine couldn’t treat right.

Wonderful post reaction, Chris. Angelina is so fantastically raw and aggressive with her unique voice, raspy and deep, performing fantastic and beautiful tonal scales. Angelina's musical eclecticism transcends the ordinary and she always manages to give a unique and passionate vision of her songs, whatever genre they are. Cheers to whoever mixed the sound to put her voice far ahead of the music. That's the money focus. It's always about her voice. This performance is one that emphasises her vocal free form agility. I'd love to see her stretch this and other songs into 6-10 minute free flowing jam sessions. Her vocal/musical growth continues as we all knew it would.

Great review Chris to a stunning performance. I listened to IIWAB and Bad Valentine in real time on the Hotel Cafe Livestream and was floored. I feel like the combination of the two performances - both sung for the first time - may someday be viewed as a major turning point in her (already brilliant, young) career, and, possibly even, legendary.

Great reaction. About Angelina portraying a bad character, that's what she did in her cover of I Put a Spell on You. Unlike other singers who covered this song, Angelina showed the person as crazy and dangerous.

Toby’s concert is called “Piano Diaries Live” so it may just be a presentation of the songs from the album. I would have to think that Angelina will be one of the performers especially since she lives in LA. It would be another great opportunity for her.

@@32f8ks Wouldn't be the first time that lyrics are wrong on a new song. Because of the jazzy/blues nature of many of her songs, it is sometimes difficult to get clear and crisp enunciation.

Nice review Chris! Man, this song I just can't stop listening to. THIS is the types of songs I feel she can just dominate in. A mix of R&B, Soul, and with a touch of Jazz, no one can touch her when she sings like this! If this is the types of songs she will be putting out in the near future, this collaboration is going to be very interesting and enjoyable. When you talk about the meaning of the lyrics, I do wonder where the idea of the song came from....Angelina or Toby? Not sure if you saw my question to Toby about what song did he listen to that convinced him to want to work Angelina? I asked it on his music video release of the lyric video for the Artist Version of the song If I Were A Boy. His response was, "I saw the Got Talent performance and knew I had to work with her." I'm guessing he was referring to Bohemian Rhapsody, however, I did send him follow up question, but am still waiting if he will respond back about which song....

I commented on this song on James Thiels post - here is my take - I have watched and listened to this performance several times - and the thought that came to my mind was that the amazing vocal skills displayed on Bad Valentine took me back to the skills Angelina displayed at age 10 in her recording of I'm Still Holding Out For You - which could have been a number one hit had it been released. Yes that is an awesome vocal as well. I have high hopes that “Bad Valentine” will be the hit “Holding Out” should have been. Great that the very savvy Toby Gad has every reason in the world to promote this to the max..
As great as this song and her vocals are the key will be getting the song or any of her songs heard. There are probably countless songs over the years that could have been big hits but for whatever reason they did not get the promotion or exposure needed. There are also many factors, besides the song itself, that go into making a song a hit.
All in all I think promotion is one of the first steps.

This is the genre then Angelina should be singing and the song is tailored to her vocal skills. It also highlights her various skills all in one song. It definitely has passion and grit as you say, and I will add attitude! For me, I hear influences of Amy Winehouse and Adele in this performance. I can't stop listening to this, and really look forward to the official release, studio and maybe music video. I might be the only one, but to me the lyrics are Angelina channeling her boyfriend's confession that he's a bad attitude guy. Something like If I Were a Boy plays with the persona of the girl and the boy, flipping the script in the middle. To me, the lyrics are about a girl dating a bad guy. Just me? Maybe.

It's the grit in her voice especially in the onset of many phrases but really thoughout the song and the outset of many. I'm calling it here. Angelina's 1st Grammy. Maybe Song of the Year. But I think the breakout potential is enormous and very good for bringing in younger fans and increasing her fanbase exponentially. Probably not the first and certainly not the last but I believe it is a turning point Performance. It will be up to Toby to push this song, and make it go viral, Republic Records is apparently not involved at all as usual. he has the clout, and probably the finances it takes to go on radio, and talk shows like he did for Victoria Justice, another one of his female singers in the past, (Kelly Clarkson show)

My take on the lyrics are probably a bit different from what most people are getting from the meaning. For me they are saying that this woman is telling this Valentine of hers that she's no good that he is too good for her and she's warning him to stay away from her because she will only cause him more pain and she acknowledges that he would be justified in "breathing fire" as the lyrics say and yet he continues to be kind to her. Sorry to those that don't like the "he, him, his" pronouns, but those are the facts.
