Ethel told the songwriters she needed one more knock out song to make Call Me Madam a hit. When they gave her this cross-singing masterpiece she shouted "We won't be able to get them outta the theatre!" She knew alright, they did SEVEN encores of this on opening night!
Actually, songwriter (singular) Irving Berlin. Reportedly, he wrote the song OVERNIGHT in his hotel room, brought it to rehearsal & the rest is history! She & co-star, Russell Nype nailed it thus prompting ALL those encores!
Kate Kahn So true! Everyone fans over Gene but even as a child I was always drawn to Donald! Personally I think he was a better singing and dancer than Gene. I always found Gene was too stiff in the upper body. Though that could just be his style, it never appealed to me as much as Donald’s fluid rhythmic & energetic moves. Definitely one of the most underrated and overlooked actors of the 50’s musicals!
@@lydiasilic I couldn't have said it better than you. Donald O'Connor was smooth and virtually flawless. He had much more fluidity to his dance. Plus, being an acrobat, incorporated that into many routines.
I first watched SITR when I was 19. I had never laughed so hard watching a movie, especially considering when the silent part was going on and the subtitles were being shown, I read it like Jean moaning out her Lina part. My parents though I had watched it before. I have no idea what inspired me to squawk her part. As for the three main, after really thinking about all the talent hollywei....wood had at the time, I think someone else could have done a better part of Don Lockwood. It's completed, it's a masterpiece to this day. It's one of the movies that should never be redone.
Could Donald O'Connor be more adorable?❤. He looks so handsome in those glasses, white tie and jacket. His voice is absolutely beautiful in this number. That man had so much talent and adorableness. What an amazing man.
Again, just more proof that a world did exist without auto-tune and it was perfection! It's called talent, and there just seems to be a dearth of it now-a-days ... Funny story - I had a Carpenters CD playing when my grand kids (9 through 12 years old) were over for the holidays and one of them said Karen's voice was so beautiful HAHA They all wanted to listen to it over and over ...
I listened to Dick Haymes and Russell Nye sing this song.. but I have to say that I genuinely think that Donald brings more lyrical and dramatic emotion , plus a melodious and mellifluous element that is missing from the other two. His singing perfectly matches Ethel's but is never overwhelmed by her (not an easy thing)..Even though Donald said that his part of the song was recorded in an isolation booth because Ethel's singing was at full power, and he had to wear ear plugs for the shoot, he brings true delight to this song. Donald's voice has an amazing range . He shows his lifelong experience (even though he is only @ 27 in this movie). I do love Donald.
One of my all-time favorites. Hearing it once, I couldn't get the tune(s) out of my head & had to go back & learn the words: brilliant, just brilliant. Both Merman & O'Connor are perfect in this & their roles in "Call Me Madam". Wonderful post, thanks so much.
I have always thought this was one of the catchiest show tunes I have ever heard. Ethel merman is great this song and a couple of others like" No Business like Show Business" are her exclusive property because no one has ever done them better.
2018 about to be 2019 and I still love this song, I heard it a few years ago. I'm still in school and when I listen to it out loud my friends all judge me But I don't care this is AMAZING!!!
I saw the play on Broadway....she with Russell N stopped the play until she would finally say...laughing..enough! Audiences loved it! She was Broadway! All now gone! The movie is rarely on TCM and it is the play that she starred in the movie...which is a good movie and she looks great!! she should have definitely starred in Gypsy to preserve the greatest performance on Broadway what is considered the greatest musical!
hear singing and there's no one there I smell blossoms and the trees are bare All day long I seem to walk on air I wonder why, I wonder why I keep tossing in my sleep at night And what's more I've lost my appetite Stars that used to twinkle in the skies Are twinkling in my eyes I wonder why (To relieve that pleasant ache) (You're not sick, you're just in love) I hear singing and there's no one there (You don't need analyzing) (It is not so surprising) I smell blossoms and the trees are bare (That you feel very strange but nice) All day long I seem to walk on air (Your heart goes pitter patter) (I know just what's the matter) I wonder why (Because I've been there once or twice) I wonder why I keep tossing in my sleep at night (With your head on my shoulder) (You need someone who's older) And what's more I've lost my appetite (A rub down with a velvet glove) Stars that used to twinkle in the skies (There is nothing you can take) (To relieve that pleasant ache) Are twinkling in my eyes (You're not sick) I wonder why (You're just in love) And I know why I'm just in love
Always, always loved Donald O'connor so much.... so very talented, a much better dancer than Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire, he had a beautiful voice, and was apparently a lovely man too. So sadly underrated. Thank you for posting.😊❤

Boy did Donald have an angelic voice. And I dare you not to look at him in Singin' in the Rain. Your eye goes right to him.

Yes.. in "Singing" I spent half the film wondering why he wasn't the maon character - he could dance much better than Gene

I have known for a long time that Donald O'connor was a greatly overlooked talent he was much better than his carrier would indicate.
I never knew O'connor had such a beautiful voice! I wish he had recorded music!
Well it's more than can be said about Ethel as she has had a Voice like a Corn Croker and she wasn't singing she was shouting the Song out
@@martincook318 Ethel Merman is one of the greatest singers of all time!
I love what chance have I with love by him
Have always loved this song. Donald has a terrific voice and there was only one Ethel, who had a lot of practice singing this on Broadway.

I've been trying to find this song in literally MONTHS. I can finally sleep in peace, goodbye world

Who doesn't love Donald. He's simply adorable.
Look at her dress! Perfect!

I'm 73 and taught the song to my daughter, she loves it, it's just so catchy
The work of a genius. Thank you Mr Berlin.

When I asked for this it was Nostalgia didn't expect this response, Can't beat some of the old Mucicals.
Donald O'Connor! A great under credited TALENT! BETTER THAN GENE KELLY! love this
I couldn't agree more. Well said!😊

Mom always sung this to me when I was little.Shari Lewis and Lamb Chop have sung this a few times too.I have seen it parodied in MAD more than once.
Aw…… i love this song, another classic!

What a great memory
I love this sort of song. Baby it's cold outside is another one. Brilliant!
Thank you for uploading this. My grandmother wound sing this all the time when she was alive. This brought back beautiful memories.

I wonder why
I keep tossing in my sleep at night
(With your head on my shoulder)
(You need someone who's older)
And what's more I've lost my appetite
(A rub down with a velvet glove)
Stars that used to twinkle in the skies
(There is nothing you can take)
(To relieve that pleasant ache)
Are twinkling in my eyes

I wonder why
(You're just in love)
And I know why
I'm just in love
Basically, says it all..thanks Donald for keeping up with Ethel!, 🙏🏽🙏🏽🤪🤪🙉🙉🍺🍺
We were singing this song in class, in Music class with this teacher called Matua Pere

Just love this song from my parents generation 💕

I think Lilith was much better than Ethel.

Learned this song when I was in the 2nd grade...
My late mother once said that Ethel had a voice like a Corn Crocker, and she was Right
Bravo!!! love it :)
Look who thinks she's Eydie Gorme!
Ethel ruined the song with her nasal ngeow, yeow, ngeoow style of singing.she's also singing ahead of tempo/rythm.so annoying!
She sang better in Airplane.
