The Paganini of Kamancheh in our times. Thanks Kayhan for your great music.
you can tell by the expression on his face once he puts down his bow that, when he plays, he puts his entire being into the music. he looks exhausted afterwards
Sometimes people underestimate how much energy can be used just sitting down. The brain, the mind, attention, focus all require so much energy and maintainance.
Thank you for shifting my focus to this detail.
For sure. I recommend next watching "How playing an instrument benefits your brain - Anita Collins
". I cannot imagine what happens in Kayhan's mind when he plays, especially considering he improvises a lot as well, and still comes out masterpiece playing filled with emotion and energy
This is NOT sort of a music that you can SCROLL or jump in the middle of it. It is like a film, like a story, like a journey, and SHOULD be listened like reading a book: from the beginning up to the end, to really understand and feel what is being played. It takes you to a trip you did not plan for !
Funny you should mention. Once I read an article on the difference between visual art, like paintings, etc., and books or music. Paintings are taken in all at once. You get the entire thing all at once. You can go back later & reexamine various parts, but overall the entire statement is made in one blow, as opposed to other art forms, which, as you mention, have to be taken in in linear fashion. Before that I hadn't really considered the difference.
what a beautiful analogy
Music you not only hear but see.
Well said
clever explanation. Thanks
On Saturday the 20th of July 2024 at Alexander theatre in Monash University Melbourne. I had the great privilege of witnessing the performance of Kayhan Kalhor and the renowned Turkish musician Erdal Erzincan, this experience was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. This performance demonstrated virtuosity at a level I have never seen before, the level of mastery by Kayhan Kalhor and Erdal Erzincan of both their respective instruments and understanding of harmony to improvise with another musician for more than 90 minutes is magnolias. From the way they utilised every component of their instrument to the emotional complexity of the music, I still sit here in awe of that performance; I truly believe that Kayhan Kalhor and Erdal Erzincan serve as a powerful motivation to aspiring musicians and are one of the greatest musicians to ever grace planet earth.
Once Mr. Kalhor have been in Lithuania. I went to his concert bearing in a mind, that Persian music always is the best quality. But it was much much more thnt I could ever expect. He took my soul away. It was and always will be the best concert in my life. He is a pure genius.
He is kurdish
Kurdish
from the first second ... goosebumps ... how can people listen to pop
when there are musics like this in the world .....you can feel god with this
Exactly what I was thinking. They should be playing this everywhere in the world and hopefully will bring us closer together, and closer to God.
Kayhan Kalhor is the best kamanche player in the world
I love the way that some of the quiet notes almost have a breathy, whispery quality to them. I discovered Kayhan's music during a visit to the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix a month ago, and was very impressed, not only with the music, but it was so cool to watch him getting into it.
Music is truly the universal language. Our hearts are picking up what he's putting down, even if it's in another language.
definitely the most beautiful music i've heard in a long time and even so long ago - really drives tears to my eyes
utterly beautiful, just as when first heard him 15 years ago!
the only thing i regretted while watching this was not discovering this gem of an artist earlier. absolutely mesmerizing stuff.
Mesmerizing. I consider myself very lucky to have seen Kalhor live 4 times. Twice in London during the 90s and twice in NY in the 2000s. He is a living legend of Persian classical music and the musician all Kamancheh players will be compared to.
Our soul purpose on this earth is love & this man has found his way to be a source
This music takes me to my childhood, to my grandmother’s garden and it’s roses. It takes me to many road trips to Iran’s northern shore, to the central desert and Kashan. Tonight, staying at home in quarantine in Chicago I’m missing my motherland. Thank you for taking me there at least in spirit
I just read your comment now & it made me want to cry because you said what I felt, that this music makes me long for the gardens and roses of Iran. It was my paradise. This music takes me right into the heart of what I have no words for. This music is indescribable.
It takes you to a trip you did not plan for, but now don't want to finish it!!
Unbelievable ... My soul flies whenever I listen.
With this song, I leave the time and place where I am
Oh man! how many times I've watched this improvisation!! and every each damn time it gives me goosebumps...
Me, 1 year later, still it does!
@@hosseinhabibi3870 Still does :D
@@farjam1990 And now, 3 years later, I can still second on that!
Unbelievable good. It moves my soul to the deepest extend.
This song truly speaks from the sole. I miss Iran
The whole music is like "talking of two lovers".
Mesmerizing !
His music keeps me focus when I write my research paper.
Exactly. In fact I'm writing a paper right now on modeling and control of polymerization reactors while listening to this. Amazing
Although everyone can enjoy music on their own way, this master's spiritual and mystical music is far more valuable to be listened to in the background.
Soroosh SMI thank you for explaining that
I can't do anything while listening to his music, his mesmerizing melodies are than just playing in background
Pierces through the soul. What an awesome sound.
his playing always gives me chills..
I have listen to this piece a thiusand time but every time it seems so good, new, and masmerizing. I everytime I find something very new
Music going deep in the body, as a thoroughly refreshing process.
Essential to me, I bow down.
Thank you for posting
I think about how I love this music. I think about how my father would have loved this music and how I wish I could have listened to this music with him. It’s transformative.
So deeply beautiful. Thank you, NPR, for including artists like Kalhor in your Tiny Desk Concert series.
What an exciting moments for world citizens, specially us as Iranians to feel so proud. Dearest immortal Ostad Kalhor-Thousand times thank you!
I had the privilege of attending a concert performance of Mr. Kalhor and percussionist Behrouz Jamali in Vancouver B.C. last April! I was mesmerized the entire performance! Nonstop playing for nearly an hour and a half! I hope he comes back to Vancouver again soon!!
When i head the 1st few notes at the very start, it pulled out something out of my heart and a gag with tears wich i barely managed to control....This is not just music, this is more...
Ustad Kayhan Kalhor you are the pride of Kurdish people... Thanks for your amazing performance in playing music
No tiny desk needed for Keyhan... he is down to earth!
this sound like lullaby is. with rich culture, that is mean it come from iranian culture ,customs, social, humanity,history,.......we love that and we proud of this music thanks for this improvisation .
This last month I listen to this more than 50 and I need to listen more. What a peace !!!!!!!
Not often, pieces of music have overwhelming power to take you to hypnotic transe, in dimentions new, and much far away. This is one. Mr Kalhor is very apparently is demonstrating the height, (or depth), of the mastery not only on his instrument, but through knowledge of classic persian music. He is amongst the cultural jewels for that ancient culture.
The best adjective I can find for define this is fascinating, Kayhan is giving us a fascinating non-stop trip of 11 minutes.
Beautiful! Thank you!
I could listen to this forever.
The improvisation is usually the most important aspect of the traditional Iranian music. It is usually performed by only one player and he/she usually needs to be a Master, because one improvisations can be as long as 15 to 30 minutes or even one hour, and he must have real and sufficient abilities to spontaneously produce up to one hour of live music without any prior preparation.
And at the end he asks, “is this enough because I can go longer” he was worried that his time was up! :)
absolutely beautiful...I love the sound quality. You can hear every single movement. He is my favorite. I wish I could go back in time to learn and master kamanche...this instrument takes my soul to another world...
Maybe go forward in time, learning the instrument a, little more every day?
Absolutely stunning.
What a gift! What a treasure!
I recommend y'all Persian traditional music
If you want something like this with extraordinary vochals innit try Mohammedreza Shajarian
If I could play like Kayhan, I'd never stop playing and if I wanted to play like him, I could never stop playing.
Amazing, haunting sound...thanks for inviting Mr Kalhor and introducing us (or me at least) to his beautiful music!
What's unique about him is how he dances with the instrument, which i think no other can do that.
I'm bewitched by his the heavenly music ,facial expressions a nd movement of fingers .
I miss home. And I'm sad why I didn't learn Kamanche which is my favorite instrument, when I was back in Iran. :(
Do it now. good luck
Never too late. Never too far. I’ve always wanted to go to Iran and I love the music. So at the age of 40, I bought a Kamanche online from Sala Muzik and started learning by myself, by just practising and watching RUclips videos. Good luck!

just crying over here
Agree! Kalhor AS WELL AS us wanted him to continue!
But that was awesome of NPR. Tight friggin recording recording set up. I'm more into the small, raw venue than the large venue with bells and whistles.
چه سوزي داره اين ساز ....
beautiful music, I started making a gourd style banjo about 5 years ago and I am amazed that it looks almost exactly like this instrument. Must finish it ! ! !

Fantastic! You guys gotta invite a Saarangi player one of these days and perhaps sitar, sarod, tabla players as well. And, it would be really great if the artists could talk a bit about the music and the system :) Thank you!
