  • Honestly, probably not a real problem for most people, but it's something to be aware of if you enjoy pushing buttons and seeing big numbers

    Thank you for this information. I've been using something called FlashBench instead to gauge the speed of my storage devices. It's an older program, but it still gets the job done.

    We need to tell the world about this. I ran 3 of the basic test stock 1GB 5x3 it wrote 900GB like WTF

    • @Streamsofwater07

      This is good info to have. They should really make the stock test 1 cycle instead of 5. I just ran 2 stock tests and it ran me up close to 600GB.
      But so people realize that this isn't the end of the world I ran the numbers. I hope this helps someone out and helps them not panic like I did.
      I have a 4TB SSD with generally advertised write of 600TBW (but apparently they run closer to 1200TBW). Out of 600TBW this program wrote about 600GB (or .6TBW). so .6/600 = .001 (or .1%). At worst case scenario, this got rid of about 4gb out of the 4000gb that I have (if that 4gb becomes a bad overused sector as one of the commentors put it) . That means that I still have 3996GB available. To put it more into perspective, I bought the SSD at $220, and .1% of that is 22 cents. I lost 22cents and 4gb worth of data by running these tests. Since I did 2 stock tests, that means that each stock test ran about 11cents and 2gb worth of data. It should be 1/5th of that if you set it to 1 cycle instead of 5 (2.2 cents / 0.4gb data) . Does it suck? Yes, but I think I'll live. I definitely deleted the app though. I'm not running anymore of those tests. 😂

    what I think happens is that it makes a test file with specified size, e.g. 1GB, then it runs read test on it for a time, eg 30sec, and if ssd is fast, this means it can read 100GB in 30sec. (reads over and over).
    Similarly, for write test, it will write inside the 1GB file for 30sec, could be 100GB if ssd is fast, overwriting the file multiple times.
    If the ssd is slow, it will not write that much.
    Same applies to interface speed, if you connect it on usb 2.0, it will write at 30MB/sec, total writes in 30sec will be much lower.

    • @paolo9038
      @paolo9038 8 месяцев назад

      Correct. 1GiB is not the ammount it will write, but the dimension of the blocks that it will use. it mean that it will write or read 1GiB blocks multiple times every second if the ssd is fast enough. 1GiB block is useful because it makes a scenario where the file is big and not frammented, which is an ideal test for SEQ read speed / SEQ write speed. 4KiB blocks are used to simulate a fragmented scenario

    • @djordje180uk

      perhaps it overheated to above 80c and that killed it, its important to have ssd temperature monitoring software while running crystaldiskmark and immediately stop the test if it's going over 70c. Ideal temperature range is like 50-60c

    Literally next to no info on this issue is on the internet. Like no one ever noticed that their TBW has taken a huge spike after the tests. Just baffling.

      HDD is fine because they use different write technology.
      SSD could be a problem if it was a fast one. The smaller size SSDs usually have lower write endurance.
      You can always check how much was written using CrystalDiskInfo

    realistically, modern (as of 2015) SSDs have such a large "life" that it's a non-issue. Most people will probably replace their drives long before you run out of writes

    • @norumai
      @norumai 8 месяцев назад +1

      @amnesiaonion2161 No worries, dude. HDDs don't have a TBW because they don't theoretically have a write limit unlike SSDs which after reaching the Terabytes Written, may cause data loss and/or corruption.
      Thankfully, SSD manufacturers add a safety fearlture where the SSD locks itself to read-only mode after reaching TBW to avoid data corruption. But it means you cannot use it to save anything

  • @lightisgreaterthandarkness

    That's not exactly how this program works... It's supposed to choose a sector size and operate only within that sector while reading/writing multiple times. In the WORST case scenario, you'd have one "bad sector"(the one that was written to over and over, and the drives firmware then sections off and quarantines the bad "overused sector". What this means inevitably is that you may lose an area of your SSD in the amount of the test sector(say 1 gb) while the rest of the drives silicon and voltage gates are PERFECTLY fine and unwritten to.
    Id be willing to bet money your drive can last many more years to come!
    Think about it... Crystaldiskmark is a well known tool that has best used by millions of people for a looooong time... Don't you think someone in the tech biz would have seen this inevitable damage and "hit the siren" by now? You're fine, or I mean... Your DRIVE is fine... Don't rely so much on drive nannys...(what I call them). Look at real world data and user experiences. How many users of ssd's do you think this program has?

  • @goldeneyeforevercom

    In summary? Why bother benchmarking an SSD? What are you going to do with the numbers anyways? Many websites review SSDs and from there you can find all the data you need. This is a great video but not enough people realize the harm to their SSD. And for what purpose exactly? That's the biggest question here. Why the need to see test results. The SSD is going to be unreal fast. Some mechanical drives might need some testing because of issues. But an SSD? I would argue this test provides zero tangible information. Meaningless.

    • @SomethingAzn
      @SomethingAzn  19 дней назад

      I usually just run the test once to make sure I’m getting what I’m advertised. Also useful if I have a problem with a drive. I had to RMA a drive and this tool helped prove there was a problem.
      Once isn’t going to do much damage, but if you leave the default settings of 5 passes, it could be a problem
