- So you brought a SSD or NVME and you want to know how long do solid state drives last? well you have different types of drives. Single Level Cell (SLC), Multi Level Cell (MLC) and Triple Level Cell (TLC) Quad Level Cell (QLC) SLC being the most expensive and the most durable and QLC being the less expensive and the least durable. Remember Not All Flash Is Created Equal. We will go by Total Bytes Written (TBW) Mean time between failures (MTBF) Warranty and Drive Writes Per Day (DWPD) All these need to be taken into account when buying and SSD and also what you plan to do with the SSD. If you are looking to doing gaming, video editing and other high performance tasks tasks on a daily basis, you may want to buy a High Endurance drive. Always use the right drive for the right type of workload.

More research should have been done on how NAND flash operates and degrades. Definitely spreading some misconceptions.
One thing it's worth moving from SSD to HDD if you have both fitted is your browser cache. That involves lots of writes and can result in unnecessary wear.
i bought a samsung 840 evo 250gb in 2013 from currys, it always got/gets heavy use, still going strong now, never been formated only once when i bought it to install windows, its been in several different laptops and pc's, currently in my gaming pc, got so much crap on it, health showing at 78% 😁

As a photographer, I use a HDD for storage, because I work with pictures and videos all the time. The SSD drive is only used for programs and other.
I might be wrong, but I imagine, it will prolong the lifespan of the SSD.
If you have a good SSD, then use it for images and videos.

quite expensive ..done quite a bit of Gaming too ...so 7 years so far .
I've been using SSDs where I work and at home since they came out. I found most of the time the drive outlasted the computer. With normal use the computer will be changed before the drive is worn out. I use a decent mechanical hard drives for writing data. With a computer of more than about 4 years old, when changing for a new computer I would put in a new SSD. I usually change my computers after about 5 years.
I have had SSDs fail on their own. Where I was working they had over 100 computers on the floor. These computers are heavily used 24/7. Over a three year period there were maybe three failures.
At home I have five computers. I had only one SSD failure since maybe the last 6 years. It was during warranty. When I sent the SSD back to the manufacture they gave me a new one. The new one worked out very well.
When I build new computers I put in all new drives. I put the old SSDs and data drives in to external USB cases and use them for data backups. These drives last a long time when used only for external data backup. I do image backups on to mechanical hard drives, because doing large image backups on to SSDs would kill them very quickly since there are limited writes. I do individual mass file backups for archival on to the SSD drives.
About every month or so I connect the SSDs to the USB port on to a computer so the drive will not have data fade over time. SSD drives if not powered up for a long period of time can have data fade. I also connect the mechanical drives on to a USB port to allow them to spin up. Letting a drive sit for a very long time can lead to the main spindle motor bearings to seize up especially if it is an older drive with a lot of hours on it.

I pondered this question and decided to take the plunge. My Desktop has one fitted as the Boot Drive but I also use Hard Disks for Data so the write cycle is lower. I fitted one to my LapTop and fitted the installed HD into the Optical Drive Bay for use in a similar way, but I do not use the LapTop very often. I have a USB Optical Drive Burner for those occaisions I may need it.
You do not indicate what the prior warning signs of imminet failure are. Are there any?

Not long enough, evidently. My 2 and a half year old Kingston SSD is already down to 89% health. An HDD of the same age would be purring along perfectly fine, and I wouldn't even have to worry about how much data I've written.
Sounds like you brought a budget drive for intensive work.
Great video, just a question, its a well known fact that if you accidentally drop a mechanical HDD to the floor the chances are that drive will get severally damaged and you would lose your data, my question is what would happen if you accidentally drop an SDD drive ? will it survive the fall? thanks and cheers!
best thing you can do is to avoid dropping these delicate components, you have to be careful

Depends on heat, keep the PC cool and the SSD should last.
Umm... No? The only thing that should / could be cool is the SSD controller. The actual NAND chips have higher lifespans when running "warm". Say ~40C. Any cooler can result in degraded life span when writing to the drive.
Cold is more likely to kill NAND than Hot. . .
@@webserververse5749 I used substandard parts in my first build and I would always get warning that the PC was overheating, two SSD failed on that machine. Built my last rig for £5500, Seven expensive fans and I've never had a problem with it..... I still think keeping the overall system cool is the best method.
To be simple, just keep your SSD in a stable temperature

I bought a samsung 970 nvme SSD back in 2018. So 5 years almost 6. Read and Write speeds are the same as day 1 and no errors found in Samsung Magician. So it keeps on going just fine. Also i have 17.5 TBW. Samsung specifies that the drive is capable of up to 150 TBW. I don't know maybe i'll keep it forever :P
I learned the hard way, by not doing my research. In 2018 I bought a Hp Omen, put in a 1tb WD Black with 2 partitions, one for my main OS and the second for testing different OS's, after about a year or so the SSD went out. After this experience I no longer do any testing on my daily PC, and bought a testing PC.
Yeah, when SSD fail, they can just die. :(

I have a 1tb Samsung ssd that is 2tb from its TBW rating and 30% full...it's over 5 years old and I'm very happy with it...normal use..no editing or heavy gaming...Samsung magician says still good..when I ask what happens when it exceeds its TBW I get different answers. The lab tests aren't always the same as user experience. (Got it all backed up and it's replacement is standing by).
Samsung is a very good choice.
this reminds me to test my old SSD. Might be using that with the RasPi 4 I bought if it tests ok.

I forget who did the study but they’ve been testing some SSDs for over 5 years right now. None have failed in the test. I have an SSD running on a system that is over six years old and it keeps trudging along.
I have a refurbished corsair 2.5 ssd from corsair a refurbesh drive bought from aria many years ago only 60 gig but still working well .

Why would gaming kill a SSD any faster than any other task? Video games are write once and read many. There is no reason to state that gaming will result in lower life span. Makes zero sense.

Solid state , means down' to the basic level transistors ! That's transistors holding either on and off states. Those states are binary one and zeros . As you know those ones and zeros are data So it real depends on the amount of transistor read/write failures over time That's how I look at it, super fast transistors switching logic states

Some folks use a SSD for the OS only with a Mechanical drive? Is there any benefit these days for doing so? My first SSD will be in 4 years for a new computer for 11. Although if there is a substantial benefit for a smaller SSD just for my OS(10 Pro) I may do so. Thanks and as always👍

Bro any suggestions for bypassing plundervolt fix issue by bios update. Its unfair how these have been pushed causing all undervolting settings to waste. I even roll back the version and restored defaults yet the undervolting is not unlockable. Please give some idea. I know bios modding is one way but I feel not so confident and worry if I will brick my laptop. If no other way then teach safe way to mod bios please.
ive not had the pleasure of a nvme drive yet i have ssd drives for games and system quickness i also use a normal hard drive for my downloads as i think this will handle the constant download then delete cycle i subject it to i destroyed a brand new 2tb ssd by accident fitting it so i dont touch them now

My SSD Health is about 97% and have pace of 90 or 80GB and for me it's OK.

I think health dropped because the health is determined by ssd specific s.m.a.r.t. Attributes no. 177 wear leveling count

Days ago I just saw a video, explaining that NUMBER OF WRITES in SDDs DOESN'T MATTER, is too much and chances are it is beyond the PC lifespan, the issue are other things like electronics and CHIPs attached to them, MAY FAIL AT ANY MIOMENT, and without warning like HDDs
i had a samsung evo 860 fail after 2 years and ozc, sandisk, intel, wd,and crucial still going strong after 5 years, l only use the op system on the ssd and all my home folders on a spinning drive

Yeppers, expensive ones last longer. Samsung ssds are probably best options. They more on expensive side than others but so is the quality.

when every i try to open anything like . files . setting . programs . nothing shows up even tho those thing are open and show on task bar . when i hover my mouse on them i can see it from the mini window but nothing more then that.. i cant see anything when i search it on google . ıf anyone knows my problem or got a video about this pls share it with me
When your programs are open and showing on the taskbar, try right clicking on an empty part of the the taskbar and choose ‘cascade windows’.

well I have had in the last ten years five Hdd and five SSD, and two nvme drives, I have replaced the Hdd 1-4 at the nine and ten year time number 5 I don"t count As i dropped it and broke it. The 2" inch sdd all died at one year of use, and the two nvme drives only lasted one month, I do not know why they died but 100% faller at one mount or one year, not worth the money, my HDD lasted a lot longer. But like all mechcanial thing they will were out in time but as they last at lest 9 years they are worth it, even if slow compared to SSD/NVME drives.

SSDs last up to 30 years.
They should last a long time as long as they are powered hdds can last on a shelf unpowered for 20 years ssd will only last on a shelf 6 months unpowered you just have to make sure they powered☺️.

I have a 7 years old HGST HDD still working. So, kind of depends. All my SSDs are still less than 3 years old. A Crucial MX500 and Sandisk Ultra 3D.
