- This video shows you how to use the CrystalDiskMark disk benchmark utility and how to interpret the results.
CrystalDiskMark is a relatively quick and dirty disk benchmark utility that is very easy to use. It is very useful for doing a quick sanity check on your storage performance. You can use it on any machine running Windows XP or newer, whether it is a laptop or a multi-socket server.
CrystalDiskMark was first released on March 31st, 2007. CrystalDiskMark has used Microsoft DiskSpd since version 4.0.0, which was released on April 30, 2015.
Version 8.0.0 added many new settings and options, so if you have used older versions in the past, this will be a good refresher.
The latest version at the time of recording is version 8.0.4.

Thanks so much, Dr. Berry! I learned quite a bit - in particular I hadn't known about the Windows feature (Windows-Shift-S) to cut sections of the screen to the clipboard. I had been using Windows-PrintScreen, pasting the full window to a Word document, then using Word picture tools to crop and resize. Thanks for taking the time to do this video!
I'm glad it was helpful!
Bravo, what a teacher this Glenn Berry!
Thanks!
Thank you so much Dr. Berry!
You are welcome!
Thank you, a lot you gave great details, and in-depth explanation which I need to help myself understand due to learning disabilities.
I'm glad the video was helpful!
@@GlennBerrySQL Yeah thank you again hah about half way in or a bit more I was finally starting to understand and get a hang of it. Turned out the first program I downloaded wasnt the mark but info one hah then I came here and found your video to learn how to use the mark version
Excellent tutorial thank you for your time
I'm glad it was useful!
Mine says failed to create file for my external ssd, Can you give me some advice and thanks!
this worked perfectly, thank you very much. especially for the link to download it because the website is confusing.
Glad it was helpful!
Sir very useful video and informative.Subscribed immediately.
Would you please clarify each 4 rows on the benchmark table?? 1 st one is the r/w speed of large files as far i know but not sure about other 3 rows....
So if I’m trying to stress test (to see max temp under load) I want to set the first box to highest number (9)?
Yes, running nine runs of each test would do that.
Any idea if it's okay to use a PCIe 4.0 SSD without a heatsink in a PCIe 3.0 laptop? I assume the 3.0 limitations are going to prevent overheating.
Yes, I think you will be fine with that setup. M.2 SSDs only get really hot if you are slamming them with lots of long sequential reads or writes (many GB at a time). You can use CrystalDiskInfo to check the temp of the SSD as you do different things.
thank you master , now I can compare my current m2 vs my future samsung m2
Yes you can easily do that with this tool.
Love your dog man!
Thanks! He is a great little dog.
How does it know what drive to test if you have multiple drives? Just by typing the name of the drive?
There is a dropdown along the top that lets you select the drive you want to test.
YOUR THE BEST
Thanks!
Hi Doc. Thanks for making this video. I've seen several You-Tubers use CrystalDiskMark in their PC hardware videos, but I'm just learning the details of the program tonight for the first time. I noticed that when you ran the first test on your 2TB Samsung 980 Pro NVMe SSD you kept the settings at default (instead of switching them to NVMe SSD first). Why?
I have Microsoft Surface Book 2 - 15" with 1TB (2018)
I ran the test on both :
Regular - Read - 2600 Write - 1300
NVME - Read - 2600 Write - 1200
Does that mean my SSD is good or very Good ?
Does it mean I have USB 4.0 port or how do I chk that ?
Samsung T7 has speeds of 1000 I think
Which other faster SSD should I look for ?
Thank You
Having 2600 MBps sequential reads and 1200-1300 MBps sequential writes is pretty mediocre for a PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 drive. But unless you are moving or copying large files between two drives, you probably won't notice much difference in real life. The 1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus is one of the best PCIe 3.0 NVMe M.2 drives.

Thanks
You can use Ctrl-S under the file menu to grab a screenshot of the window too. Ctrl-T gives you the same thing in text format. No need for Windows utilities etc. Helps a lot seeing my keyboard doesn't have a PrtSc key :(.
Good points!
Which computer version do you use for reads (6661.83 M/s - SSD m2 nvme 980 pro ? ) .i'm going to get one (Laptop HP ) Please tell me one. Thanks in advance.
Very few laptops have CPUs that support PCIe 4.0 (which uses a lot of power and generates a lot of heat). Something with an Intel Tigerlake-H would.

I uninstalled the CrystalDiskMark but I think that the test file still remains somewhere in C/ drive.
Does anyone know how can I find it and delete it ?
If you ran the standalone executable, it will be in the root of the C: drive. If you ran a setup program to install it, it should be in a directory under Program Files.
As Glenn said, it's in the root of C. But it's a folder with a name, something like
CrystalDiskMark0AAF56BE
Inside this folder is a file, that looks something like
CrystalDiskMark0AAF56BE.tmp
I should have mentioned, that I only run the exe by itself. I never install.
With this run, once the test is over or you press Stop, the file and folder are removed.
How much data is written to the drive in one test? I had 200 GB written to my SSD, and there is no warning anywhere about how much will be written, I find this annoying
I've never actually measured that. It would depend on how large the test file is and how many runs were done on each test. Only one part of the test should be generating a lot of sequential writes.
In all the years I have used this tool, you are the first person that ever made that complaint. I'm not the author of the software, so you would get better results by giving your feedback to the actual software author.
when the ssd test is going on the laptop is using charge or without charge
I'm not sure what your question is here. You can run CDM either way. The scores will usually be lower when running on battery vs. being plugged in.
@@GlennBerrySQL i mean the result of ssd speed which is 2 tb samsung 980 pro like in the video, the test is using laptop with charge or not
because my gen 4 samsung ssd just have half speed from their full potential speed when i test without charging in laptop
@@sulthanshadiqah9321 I've already answered this question. The test results in this test will often be lower on a laptop when the laptop is running on a battery instead of being plugged in. When I made this video, I was using a desktop machine, not a laptop.
Hi, am using samsung 980 pro but my crystal disk penchmark show read:2700mb write:2800mb what is the reason
You probably have it installed in a PCIe 3.0 M.2 slot, perhaps in a laptop or older desktop machine.
@@ChorizoBerry tks for the reply i will check it out
Check what slot it is installed in and whether that slot supports PCIe 4.0 or not

excuse me, mister. can help?
I'm using the program, but every time I test it is always stuck at 'create test file'
I would try downloading the latest version. Beyond that, I can't really help, especially since you didn't provide any details about your system.
@@GlennBerrySQL I will try.
processor: intel core I5-2400 CPU
RAM: 4GB
system type: 64-bit
I use diskmark8_0_4a, that the latest, no?
apply to both old and new sd card (including pendrive). most (if not, all) are exfat.
Every time I run to test the write & read, always stuck in 'create test file' (have waited for minutes)
are there any more info should I share?
@@nightchrome1076 Unfortunately, your system is quite old (eleven years) and pretty slow by modern standards. Running this test on SD cards and USB thumb drives is going to take many, many minutes. You should try running it on your C: drive to see if that works and how long it takes.
@@GlennBerrySQL work in C, took 10 to no more 'create test file', 20 for the first (read) progress, and total more than 2 minutes.
@@nightchrome1076 Sounds like the SD cards and USB drives you are trying to test are just very slow.
After using it, my device became write protected an I have tried everything, yet it can't be removed.
That is not what CDM does or how it works.
Thanks for your reply. Do you have any idea how this can be fixed? I had tried to make it a bootable device - successfully - using rufus, then i booted it up (on the usb) and it wsa working fine. Then I benchmarked it using cdm and that is when it happened!
Got 2444 MB/s read with my 1TB WD Blue SN550. Pretty good for the low price I paid.
Yes, that is pretty good for that drive.
Except for the 2tb m.2...I have exactly the setup and got almost the same results....so...my question becomes....given all this horsepower ...how fast can ms word go....gaming benchmarks don't tell me much...but the day to day stuff matters....how will spss or a 3 gb excel file go
A very fast PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD is not going to "feel" that much faster than a slow 2.5" SATA SSD in most daily tasks. It is handy for copying large files and a few other things.
@@GlennBerrySQL thanks
using this to measuer the I/O on SQL server. Reads are great; Writes are nowhere near the reads.
That is fairly common
I don't know, Rick, some numbers don't add up.
I'm not sure what you are trying to say here...
