In this film, the country is communist. In communism, you have more starvation, extreme equality and poverty and there's a less worry on people's race and looks. Everything and everyone is dumbed down. People are just the ever workers of the goverment. The dictator wants success for himself and the country.
On facism, the dictator wants success on it's people and the country and keep himself in power and silence oposition and kills other races and wants his people to be strong and perfect. Either way, they are both dictatorships so there isn't freedom in either.

Down and Out in Paris and London; and The Road To Wigan Pier'; and "Homage to catalonia" are right up there too. Thoroughly recommend them.
1984 is not about drawing comparisons but to make us question how free and happy we truly are.

The writing has been on the wall for the past 5 years for anyone paying attention.
I wouldn’t. I knew about this is January. I didn’t know how illiberally governments would react to it, but based on how many stupid, politically and economically illiterate people elect stupid, weak, and illiberal politicians, I should’ve guessed it. I fought it all the way too. I fought for closing the borders in January, I fought the panic buying, and I fought against keeping the lockdown and for reopening business back in April. Why was I months ahead of the vast majority of people? Because I watch Styxhexenhammer on RUclips, and through him I had access to Real News. Everything the mainstream media tells you is old news, lies, and propaganda.
This was coming already before 2020. The dying of free speech is long going on.

Orwell was a socialist. Do some research on him. This movie is about Fascism. Extreme right wing ideology. The merging of the state/corporate apparatus into a dystopian and totalitarian system.

Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.

I lived at a house that had 12 outside cameras because the owners wanted to watch what was going on with their house/property. I was the caretaker and had rules I had to follow to live there. Some rules like no guests, I couldn't use the A/C or heater (heck i lived in the high desert in CA and it was in the 100's in summer and freezingin the winter). Later on after a few years of living there I could invite friends over and one friend said "why is there a chair there, it's in a weird spot off from the patio." I said it's there because neither of those cameras can see that spot and i can sit there without the iwners watching me. I always referred to the owners as "Big Brother" and referred to 1984 for the scene where winston sits next to the screen because big brother can't see him.

What's interesting about the film, is that in the last scene, Winston reaches for a Knight. Knights only move 4 spacess, and when he reaches he pauses.

Banning words is the left. Enough said. Taking down statues is (and this may come as a surprise to you) both. For example, a BLM statue was taken down by right wingers who didn't like it after one day. Erasing history is the right. The left focuses on the history and looks at the bad things people did whom we worship as Gods. They show us that they were all flawed people. That we should look at the accomplishments, not people. The right tries to make people in history (Christopher Columbus, the Founding Fathers) look like Gods without flaws. Although I do think the left should appreciate the accomplishments of these people a bit more. Making a list of people who didn't vote "correctly" is both. There was a lot of anger towards Trump supporters from Biden supporters, as there was a lot from Biden supporters to Trump supporters. They both accused each other of voting for the incorrect candidate, and I'd imagine there was some shifty list making going on for both sides.
Now let's look at their system of wealth and power distribution. The inner and outer party got it all. The money. The power. Everything. The rest of the world got nothing. This is, by definition, fascism. Some people get it all, the rest get nothing.
P.S.- Saying "You’re blind if you can’t see that" doesn't validate your argument.

Lived under 2 different authoritarian regimes. So many things in this book portrays aspects of authoritarianism so perfectly, although I understand totalitarian regime would be much harsher. Democracy should never be taken for granted.

I watched that for first time recently..And most things you point out just even details like Julia sachet, I didn't understand...You clarified many things of the movie I could not grasp and because everyone is talking about or we're during lockdown..8 knew there was meaning to it, yet it was hard for me to grasp the ideas the way you put it..I get it much better now..I'm sure the book is interesting, more detailed as most book are but we are moving away from books and addiction to the net and phone..

With Brexit becoming more and more frightening, and it becoming the self-serving plaything of the politicians, I decided to re-read the novel. I haven't read it since about 1978, but I felt drawn back to it.
In 1978 (when the year '1984' wasn't too far away, and 'telescreens' hadn't appeared, it was of interest, a bit worrying, but not 'real').
In 2019, it is VERY real now that telescreens are not only on our desks but also in our pockets. Thoughtcrimes are starting to appear in the UK were the power of the internet is being used against elected politicians to de-select them from office if they don't agree with the paymasters of the rabble. It is VERY worrying and I never thought we would ever get to this point.
Christ, Orwell was a genius.

Pauly Paul - No, I don't agree about telescreens being on our desks and pockets and thoughtcrime appearing in the UK as that is absolutely not true. CCTV and online policing is used to prevent crime offline and online. It is to gain identity of criminals committing crimes like assault, burglary, shoplifting, terrorism etc offline and people committing crimes such as fraud, theft, making and viewing real life footage showing abuse to animals and minors, cyber terrorist attacks etc online. All this is done for the safety of the public offline and online.

This was a very good movie. I saw it in the theatre twice. The casting was great. The acting was great. The movie was true to the book. Even to the point to where in some scenes you know what the actors are thinking.
My recollection is that in the book Julia hates high level party members because she's encountered a few of them. We don't know the details but either she was sexually abused or saw abuse. Probably the latter. So Julia - being a young beautiful woman - has a lot of first hand knowledge that Winston hasn't a clue about.
Both the book and the movie pass on covering Julia's torture. But she, like Winston - at the end - is a zombie brainwashed by the government.
One of the things about 1984 is the horrific ending. Winston's brain is mush. The ending leaves the reader pondering the question... Was Winston Smith a hero? Yes. But mostly NO. If heroes are people we aspire to celebrate and emulate - how can Winston be a hero?
A mostly overlooked part of 1984, is its epilogue...
It goes all into language, and describes how words will be disappeared, and with that disappearance, the object or thing represented by those words, ultimately goes out of existence. Now and in history... Cancelled, as it were. I find this truly thought provoking, and ultimately a prerequisite, as it appears now, to authoritarianism. ✍️😷
