My mom is a retired social worker and my son works as at an Vet's Emergency Care Clinic as an assistant. I don't know how either of them did/do it and I was a substitute teacher for 8 years. Sincerest Hugs.
Dexter was tested for allergies, skin test. He needed to be sedated…and it was ordered by his dermatologist. Nope, blood tests are not accurate. The skin tests are better, still not as exact. But we had an idea of what he was allergic to.
Yeah, for humans either. A younger sibling, although an adult at the time, knew she was allergic to peanuts and grapes, etc, but she loved them. So she had been stuffing herself with peanut butter and grapes and went to work. An hour or so later my mom gets a call from sis's employer that she needs to come and get her and take her to the hospital cause she was going into anaphylactic shock (not quickly though I guess, I assume they would have called 911 for that...). After this she gets an allergy test. They're like, "Nope, you ain't allergic. But since you kinda nearly died and we don't know why here's an epi-pen. Good luck!" 😶🙄
@@Kat-kv8mm it’s the same battery actually. Dexter had atopic dermatitis. By trial and error we found some fruits he was not allergic to, or veggies. Mostly he had medical grade kibble. We adopted lobo…I am crossing fingers we cross the critical age without him developing allergies. Dogs do between 2-4.
Our first dog was Lobo! Miss him so much still. He was part beagle and when we went to pick him up my brother thought he was going to look like Snoopy. 😂 I was only two or so, so I didn't know what to expect, but I remember when we went to pick him up. He was a year old and his family was moving out of country and couldn't take him. Best dog ever! He and the cats would go out hunting together. One of them would follow us on walks and learned to look both ways before crossing the street. Smart kitty! Prayers for yours to be healthy. 🙂
@@Kat-kv8mm dogs are incredible. Lobo is a Rottweiler chihuahua cross. They call them mini rotties. He has the Rottweiler I need to exercise down. He is also getting trained as a service dog.
Years ago I had a dog who was literally allergic to the state we live in and people too. Yep, he was allergic to human dander. After allergy blood work twice and having three vets tell me, "I'm going to consult with Dr R " (the guru of skin), I decided to consult with Dr R myself and have him do the scratch test. I learned a lot about allergies that day. It also turns out that the blood tests were just as accurate as the scratch test for environmental, bug bite, and contact allergies. Food allergies require an elimination diet to figure out what, if any, foods are a problem. My dog had no food allergies, which was a bit disappointing because food allergies are usually very easy to avoid. The one contact allergy he had that I figured out on my own was to melaleuca, aka tea tree oil, which is found in a lot of shampoos, ear treatments, and other natural products. Within 30 minutes of bathing him his entire skin was bright pink and radiating heat while every hair was standing on end. Thankfully the vet was three doors down and he quickly got a cortisone shot to stop the histamines in his body.
People are WILD. The mechanic ought to know better though. I’m sure he’s seen the horrible damage that poorly trained DIYers can do to a car. In a car it will probably cost more to fix the damage than it would have to have just hired a qualified mechanic to start with. But any damaged parts are basically endlessly replaceable, and your car doesn’t care if you have to keep ripping it apart and trying it again. Same is not true for your dog. Also, to be fair, I do wish there was more of a public awareness campaign to educate the public about basic pet first aid including what human OTC meds can be used safely in pets and at what doses. We’ve all been there, your furry best friend doesn’t feel good and it’s after hours and maybe the nearest emergency vet is a long way away or it’s a horrible blizzard and you’re on your own until morning. If more people knew what they could safely give, had appropriate meds on hand, and knew appropriate dosages, they could maybe avoid doing something that will make things worse (like giving Tylenol) while still helping their buddy feel better until they can get in touch with a qualified vet.
I have a vet who at one point was expressing some guilt for the death of my ferret, and I had to say *I'm* the one who didn't even call for an appointment. (I was younger and stupider then, but not so young and stupid as to blame the vet!)
BTW…. Did you know Vet (as in veterinary) stands for Voodoo master Every owner thinks they knows better Takes it all cause they love animals But there are some of us who do believe in and appreciate our animal health professionals. Keep up the good work!
Wow. That's all I got. Wow. I can believe people are that stupid. Just sorry they don't realize how being a vet isn't a "scam". Thank you for your care of all the pets and their owners.
I worked in a shelter for a few months. When the lady managing it went out for holidays she gave me the vet's number in case of emergency & told me to call if anything happened. So far so good. At some point, one of the dogs, a very old one refused to eat and even move out of his little house, so I called her to tell her what was going on and that I was going to call the vet if it continued. It did so I call, they promise to come the following day. She came that night, called the vet to cancel the visit saying she could fix it just fine. I left. The dog died bc it had a problem in the stomach and needed medicines & attention. Shortly after I quit. If she wanted to kill her animals, I wasn't going to be her accomplice. I did feel sorry for the poor little things in there, specially a very sweet black dog that would follow me everywhere 😔
I’m a vet assistant (going to vet tech school) at an emergency and specialty hospital and after I was done talking to an owner about why he brought his cat in he asked me if I wanted him to wait in the lobby or if he could leave… The veterinarian hadn’t even laid eyes on this cat and I hadn’t even grabbed by baseline information on the cat yet (heart rate, respiratory rate, etc.)…
With regards to #1, I once consulted an allergy specialist for respiratory symptoms I was having. I don't know how pets are tested for allergies normally? Are skin tests considered the gold standard? Anyway I did the tests on the skin of my back. Having to remain flat on my stomach for 20 minutes was a bit annoying, but the scratching to check reactions really is no worse than a slight fingernail scratch. I asked that specialist about blood allergy tests, and he said the same you did--that they're not as reliable. He generally ordered them only on pediatric patients who would be scared of the "scratch test", and try getting them to lie down for 20 minutes. I forgot his name, but you'll find out since he'll be spending eternity underneath Satan's rectum, too.
This is bad! I can see a disappointment through the sarcasm. I had a dog with a complication after sterilisation (first hernia and after 6 months ovarian remnant syndrome) but I never blamed vets. They are taking care of our pets, and sometimes things goes south. They care. I know there is a lot of emotion involved but to blame a doctor for outlandish reasons it's just lashing out. They do not deserve it!
Even if you could diagnose a dog that's vomiting and not eating, what could you possibly do about it without him having a vet in the same state? When I had a dog vomiting and not eating, it turned out he'd eaten some non-food items that had to be removed. I'm not sure how a vet in a different state could have helped with that at all.
Oh sweetie. Please don’t take any of these things and let them upset you at all. I know you know these people are complete nutjob s. I know you have spent years and years education and being trained to take care of our precious animals I love my vet.
Words fail me. I..... well, it's people 😲. Like I say in my store, it would be a great job if it wasn't for the (some) customer's. Hang in there the animals need you.
Sometimes I wonder about whether or not I made the right choice in becoming a PCP-of people. Today I learned that “people” can be even MORE unreasonable and ignorant about PETS than they are about themselves. PSA: vegetables are a really good idea. All humans should eat vegetables. Please eat vegetables. //endrant
My friend from Scripps Research couldn't get into medical school so she became a veterinarian. She told me that it was the best decision she ever made. She does a lot of pro bono work and absolutely loves her patients. She didn't have to be in the hospital during COVID, like most of her friends.
I'm so drunk right now.....and been thinking...Chopper is a reindeer doctor for human..and you are a human doctor for animal...does it mean both of you guys love cotton candy?
3 made me say things out loud. Idiots live among us. rofl. The blood test for allergies... Could this be because it is sometimes used in people. Accurate or not, I honestly don't know. I've only had the one where they poke you with tons of needles, and you do or do not react. I swear the things I'm supposedly allergic to got worse after said test. I can't be around cats now without my face doing this horrible red, puffy thing with watery eyes.
For shame, thinking the public isn't qualified to medicate their pets and do surgery on them! Of course they are! The love they have for their pets gives them the knowledge and skill they need! 🤣🤣🤣 I'm an LVT, and you know things would be boring without clients who treat us like grifters, thieves, and cons, and then blame us when their DIY 'vet care' goes wrong. 😜
Doctor, I don't know why some people are so stupid. Today's political climate is really bringing them out too. The story about the woman feeding her dog Tylenol is frightening. I would never even consider giving my cat human over-the-counter medication. But, I sure would consult my vet and follow their advice about any issues that arise with him. I hope that dog survived. A responsible pet owner would make sure they know what things could hurt their furry ones. So many substances are good for people, but deadly to our fur babies. YIKES.

I just…can’t wrap my head around it.
The image of you performing a Mortal Kombat move as a ninja on a dog had me cracking up.
Dude. You have to learn more than MDs and still don’t get enough respect.
Love the sarcasm here. XD
And yeesh. Gotta love people, amirite?
Wow lol. As a social worker I get told off in crazy ways too. I hate people.
🫂 hugs. Social work can be tough indeed. Please take care of yourself.
I say this every day at work. Every. Damn. Day. Didn’t I go into this hell hole to help people?
My mom is a retired social worker and my son works as at an Vet's Emergency Care Clinic as an assistant. I don't know how either of them did/do it and I was a substitute teacher for 8 years. Sincerest Hugs.
As I always say… common sense isn’t common anymore.
Son you are awesome
Good luck!"
😶🙄
@@Kat-kv8mm it’s the same battery actually. Dexter had atopic dermatitis. By trial and error we found some fruits he was not allergic to, or veggies. Mostly he had medical grade kibble. We adopted lobo…I am crossing fingers we cross the critical age without him developing allergies. Dogs do between 2-4.
Our first dog was Lobo! Miss him so much still. He was part beagle and when we went to pick him up my brother thought he was going to look like Snoopy. 😂
I was only two or so, so I didn't know what to expect, but I remember when we went to pick him up.
@@Kat-kv8mm I am sorry for your loss. We all remember our lost pets. They are family
The break-into-peoples house-joke, made me think you were the vet version of house lololololololol😂❤
If more people knew what they could safely give, had appropriate meds on hand, and knew appropriate dosages, they could maybe avoid doing something that will make things worse (like giving Tylenol) while still helping their buddy feel better until they can get in touch with a qualified vet.
all I have to say is preach brother, just preach!
These sound on par with some of the crazy things owners have said or done with me !
Ok now I want to get super mad at the lady who fed her dog TYLENOL?! I am highly interested in knowing her logic and reasoning. That poor dog 😭
I GOTTA love the titles!
People are freaking wonderful, aren't they? Especially under stress.
Oh Bro, these stories are rough.
These are what most ER veterinarians call "Tuesday".
I have a vet who at one point was expressing some guilt for the death of my ferret, and I had to say *I'm* the one who didn't even call for an appointment. (I was younger and stupider then, but not so young and stupid as to blame the vet!)
BTW…. Did you know Vet (as in veterinary) stands for
Voodoo master
Every owner thinks they knows better
Takes it all cause they love animals
But there are some of us who do believe in and appreciate our animal health professionals.
Keep up the good work!
Diagnosis by scrying should really be taught more in vet schools 😅
Wow. That's all I got. Wow. I can believe people are that stupid. Just sorry they don't realize how being a vet isn't a "scam". Thank you for your care of all the pets and their owners.
Wow! So sorry you've gone through this!
Those poor animals... this is what happens when everyone can keep pets and do with them whatever they want, without consequences.
As a dog groomer for 15yrs, you wouldn’t believe some of the s**t we get blamed for 🤦♀️
After 15 of my 25 years in veterinary medicine in the ER I think I have heard the same if not worse.
It must be harder dealing with the people than the animals sometimes.
You can't fix stupid.
Bless your heart. (In a good way!)
You mean you're not one of those vets that can remove complicated internally entangled tumors without massive surgery? For shame...❤

My friend from Scripps Research couldn't get into medical school so she became a veterinarian. She told me that it was the best decision she ever made. She does a lot of pro bono work and absolutely loves her patients. She didn't have to be in the hospital during COVID, like most of her friends.
Well I hope you learned your lesson
Number 3 should have been reported for animal abuse.
This does not surprise me at all.
YIKES.
Ummmm . . . Well if ever there was accurate proof . . . Ignorance does indeed know no bounds.🙄
Except it's common knowledge that too much Tylenol is bad for humans thus logically also being bad for dogs
Can dogs even take it?
Yeah, you were wrong 🤦🏽♀️🙄people 🤷🏽♀️but you’re not alone. Doctors for humans get similar treatment from patients and families for similar reasons 🤦🏽♀️
People are crazy
Witty 😅
Sadly to say, we don’t deserve pets sometimes. They are there for us during the lowest parts of our lives. Yet, three health and livelihood is put into danger from human stupidity and ignorance.
^their
Wait aren't u also responsible for the OWNERS' med dosages?? Because honestly, there seems to be a necessary massive adjustment for them too 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
💜💙
Wow, you are exposed to a lot of cooks when you're a vet.
And you call yourself a vet 🤣😅 but seriously, wtf is a jet role??WWW tactics is maybe the answer 🤔
Whoa, people can have some looney tunes expectations 😨😨
... Kinda would be funny to see those people tell the authorities and get themselves charged w animal cruelty
Some people are just rude. They can disagree with you and seek a second opinion, but that gives them *no* right to be rude. Absolutely disgraceful. I hope all of these people are told, politely but firmly, that they are no longer welcome at your practice
