Hammerwatch Review

- An underappreciated gem, Heroes of Hammerwatch is a roguelike action adventure game done right, one that respects player skill and rewards risk. With a wide variety of character, items, enemies, and levels...Hammerwatch features exciting boss fights, leveling, and rewarding progression.
Sadly this isn't a Hammerwatch review, but a Heroes of Hammerwatch. Not something I was looking for. :(
Every time I'm on the fence about buying a game rags come along and makes me poor.
Guys don’t trust his review. He is a dog therefore has paws and can not play the game properly. Seriously though this game was amazing with coop
@The Happy Rat. I checked out this game after me and a camp counselor connected on our love of indie games. He also recommended Hollow knight.
Casually LOLing as I play this with fricken hooves! And it's _AwEsOmE!_ /)^3^(\
I have about 100 hours in this game. I could not recommend it more, it's great and has so much content and room for progression, I am still not sick of it. It's one of the few games that has had me hooked for an extended period of time.
Speaking of, I need to go on a gold run sometime so I can finish some blacksmith upgrades. The dlc doubles the amount of dungeon to explore and adds another character class. As well, there is another dlc that simply adds another new class to play. This last class came with a free update as well that added more items, balance changes, and quality of life updates you'd normally see in a game with proper post release support.
One final note is that you can actually play with more than 4 players. Do so with a console command that unlocks the player limit. Be warned, that this will not make the game easier as enemy and boss HP scales to the number of players.
Hey do you have any recommendations for similar games? My friend and I are bored of this game now after 250+ hours and need a new one just like it
@@FearConquered Hell Divers, Deep Rock galactic, Last Epoch (more of a Diablo alternative but still better than Diablo)... Then of course Hammerwatch 2 is coming out soon and so is Helldivers 2. Oh, you'd love Earth Defense Force 4 and 5. And finally, at least off the cuff, Risk of Rain 2.
This channel needs millions more subs. THIS is how games should be reviewed
Agreed!
An excellent, detailed review of a game. I look forward to watching your older content, and future projects. Many thanks for providing this.
I come for the dancing pupper, I stay for the pleasant voice and high quality review.
There are a couple of things I think I should add.
1) There are Class Titles that apply a permanent stat bonus to all of your other characters. This is located in the Guild Hall section of the game.
2) There is a way to play with more than 4 players, although it may no longer work.
is he just reviewing things in my steam library... i think he's a spy
"What if I'm a spy...or you?"
@@matthegarty6235 "it could be any one of us"
Really enjoy rags reviews and commentary, thanks E.G. and Rags for this content!
Heroes of HammerCrack is fantastic. It will eat up free time as it is addictive AF.
Title really should say that it's Heroes of Hammerwatch, not just Hammerwatch as that is a different game.
Should make a Hammerwatch review as well, maybe even still prior to the release of HW2 and the Anniversary edition of OG HW. It's truly a gem still. Aged like fine wine!
^.-.^ The Doggo is back! *grabs popping corn*
The first game was so good, i didn't knew they released a follow up so i will put it on my wish list
Loved the first as well and binged it hard, then I knew the guys were working on Serious Sam's Bogus Detour (they actually were able to licensed for that from Croteam!), but then life happened and I totally forgot about that game until at some point I stumbled across Heroes of Hammerwatch, having no clue about it at all, somewhere in "twonty-twone" (as ThrillSeeker once called it). Bought it in a sale, but since I was totally drawn into VR gaming already, I never actually tried it out until just recently, basically triggered by the HW2 announcement :D
And even with some hardship in the beginning of the game, it keeps growing on me. Absolute recommendation. And don't forget, as it goes for all rogue-lites: The journey is the reward. Don't even try to beat the game. You won't. Just have fun with the gameplay mechanics :)
(and yes, my reply is late, you probably have it already, but I'm also writing this for others to read if they contemplate on getting it)
Just starting this video and hearing the music reminded me that I used to just run around just spinning in circles by moving my mouse cursor around my character... I don't know why I did it, but I did.
As did we all xD
I can’t believe my uncle made this game!
Best doggo, bringing us the bestest games
Thanks for this Rags, i had forgotten all about this game until this review, think i'll give it a replay on steam now, keep up the good work.
Have to say this is a good review for the game. Touched on a lot of key features of the game. Recognized the avatar and voice rags. not the new name though.
Never been much into indie games, but this looks nice
Only difference between indie games and other games are that the game developer is independent so there's a big chance you've actually played indie games. Indie games that don't look like indie games but you might have played: Factorio, Rocket League, Undertale, Stardew Valley, Papers please!, Kerbal space program, Super meat boy, The binding of Isaac, Braid, This war of mine, Shovel knight, Darkest Dungeon and Subnautica.
@@WuCSquad Technically, even Witcher 3 is a fricken indie game.
0:00 That animation is cute and fits the music... XD
0:05 It's even more a darn shame that even more people haven't heard of the original Hammerwatch either, which is an absolute gem as well.
0:34 EG: I'm not covering the DLCs
Also EG: Plays the DLC class
3:45 Nice Quake reference there hanging on the wall :)
8:04 So true, especially at the beginning it can make you chew on the edge of your desk
11:59 The soundtrack definitely slaps. Same goes for the OG HW, some tracks are even taken from that, like the one on the prison floors.
13:18 Nice closing line, nails it!
PS: Can't wait for Hammerwatch II which is going to be an open world RPG :)
I was gifted this game, tried it for 10 minutes, didn't get it and quit out never to play again. Seemed very basic and wasn't particularly fun.
After watching this review I understand what it is now and can't wait to het home to put some serious time into trying it out more throughly ! Thanks Rags
dancing Rags makes my day
quite detailed review that helped me to decide.
thanks a lot
wow, nine minutes until you switched to your normal delivery (speech rhythm & intonation).
after that that, the review was enjoyable
thx 4 vid, informative and enjoyable
PS: do not do slownald, it's painfull
Should take a look at Chronicon when it leaves early access, awesome RPG. Might also like unexplored
Hey you found Hammerwatch! good for you... you seem to like all the same stuff I do actually, so hooray
Hammerwatch is a dope game. My mate and I played it in alpha or what ever yeaaaaaarrrs ago. Top quality.
I'm 50% here for the review, 50% here for the dancing doggo.
It should be noted that despite him only reviewing the base game, about half the footage is playing with a DLC character.
Which I say in the review.
@@Rags I think there's a misunderstanding?
You do say that this review only covers the base game, but it doesn't go any further than that. People unfamiliar with the game wouldn't know that half of the gameplay shown is as a DLC character. I'm just trying to be informative about it.
Chiming in on the informative part: Even though he played the witch hunter, that doesn't change anything on how the game is portrayed, you just play difference classes without that single one (there's 8 other classes, one of which is tied to beating the arena in the Pyramids DLC once though). as for the other DLCs, they're both harder areas to grind though after you've reached a certain point and probably beaten the tower which is the base game's content and will take you a TON of hours to achieve in the first place. In other words: It's totally fine to first grab this game without DLCs first and get them later on. You're not missing out on anything during the base game meanwhile.
This looks cool as hell. You've sold me on it.
Godamn that dancing doggo is cute!
You see a game called “Heroes of Hammerwatch”, but I see a top down Dead Cells mixed with Enter the Gungeon. Like, seriously, if you mix those games, this is EXACTLY what you get.
The previous game in the series is called "Hammerwatch", and it got better reviews on Steam and GOG.
I think the original Hammerwatch got better reviews because some people did not understand that though "Heroes of Hammerwatch" it is the same Hammerwatch universe it is a different genre. It is not even considered successor of Hammerwatch since there will be officially Hammerwatch 2. They expected a successor what was actually an off-spin. That is what I got from the Steam reviews and forum comments. People tend to complain before they even think, and blame the game before they blame themselves not knowing what they buy into.
I read a recommendation for this game earlier, but no details were given other than "$6 on Steam, I put 200+ hours into it and still want to play more"
As soon as I heard the word "roguelike" in the first 20 seconds of this review, I paused and went to download it. No regrets.
Point is, if you're even remotely into roguelikes and rogue-lites, you need to have this game, period. Even if you usually don't enjoy those, you'll very much probably have a decently good amount of fun with this anyways.
Maybe change the title to "Heroes of Hammerwatch Review". There is another game called just Hammerwatch.
Also the same developers, obviously!
Looks fun, thanks for sharing.

Thank you. I just started playing this game and I was sooo confused
Rogue-lite please ;) it sais it on the tin, it's vastly, vastly different than a rogue-like
For anyone wondering what the difference is:
Rogue-like: Full reset after dying
Rogue-lite: You'll keep some stuff like the gold and ore, exp, city upgrades, blacksmith upgrades and others in this very game when dying
@@CakePrincessCelestiayou're missing a key part: a rogue-like is per definition turn-based. Enemy's move when you move or card games when you take turns. Rogue-lite isn't pretending to be "like rogue" but borrows some of the (in the time) ground breaking featers the game had like an ever changing dungeon or random equipment among the things that happen after your character dies. A game can't be Rogue-like if it isn't turn based, this was the defining part of the game "rogue" in it's time
This review has convinced me to subscribe
Okay, sold. You should get some kind of compensation from publishers/developers for that kind of promotion.
Oh wow. A like and comment to help the channel out oWo
Not a game for me but thank you for the great review.
There are demos for "Hammerwatch" and "Heroes of Hammerwatch".
Heroes of hammerwatch is just hammerwatch with the dlc
Awesome game, solid challenge and play styles. loved it sense it was a greenlight game
great review. i love this game.
P.S. I saw the logo for the game randomly flash over and over again for a sec. Seems like brainwashing to me.
cease your investigations
Can you play this with mouse and keyboard? Thanks.
yeah
What is with the dog animation?
It's just his avatar. Guessing you're new here.
What is with it?
It's cute.
There is a other hammerwatch just like golden axe. Do u find a plank of wood on each level then try to escape at the end? But when u die u don't start over that is rouge lite.
I love this game, but it is a little bit too grindy even for me! I still play it though, I just have a few months off before delving back in again or I would go mad! : )
I'm still trying to beat Enter the Gungeon. If I ever finish that, I'll definitely look into trying this out next.
Good luck. I have bought both games and play both on and off. I have beaten HoH already and with all characters and with some characters multiple levels of next game plus. Enter the Gungeon on the other hand seems a long way from my point of view. Just buy both ans see which you beat first. 😁
So, your title says Hammerwatch, but the game you're reviewing is Heroes of Hammerwatch and Hammerwatch is a different game from Heroes of Hammerwatch...
This could work on the switch, for some on the go regrets as I die
The original Hammerwatch game is on Switch, Heroes of Hammerwatch I don't know.
Meanwhile, it is available on Switch. Also runs great on The Deck.
@@CakePrincessCelestia Thanks for leaving the comment, when this vid was made it wasn't avaivable on the switch for me
Many thanks for this comment ^^
@@Unformed8 You're welcome. Release was on July 29, 2020 as far as I could find out, so you probably just slightly missed it.
this looks A LOT Like the old tibia game! if only this was Multiplayer!
Is it still good? read a negative review saying they nerfed it to death
It definitely is.
Me and my brother really enjoyed the first game but then we got this and saw how different it was. Do you just keep going into the mines? Is that the whole game? Please Somebody explain
The point is playing the game mechanics and having fun. You'll progress past the mines as they become easier over time as your characters get better. It's not the linear once done it's done stuff like the predecessor. But if you're more into that, keep an eye out for Hammerwatch 2 which will release later this year, also with a new Anniversary Edition of the OG Hammerwatch from 2013 that will come with overhauled gameplay mechanics (basically kinda a new game with the old campaigns) and even a third campaign. But do yourself a favour and just get Heroes in a sale at least and just play it whenever you're in the mood for grinding though some levels until HW2 releases. It's worth it.
Rags on rags on rags
OH NO NO NO NO NO NO! LOOK AT THIS DUDE!
Great Video Thanks
good review!
title says Hammerwatch review. videos shows gameplay of Heroes of Hammerwatch...
Hammerwatch or Heroes of Hammerwatch? Those are two different games.
great review
Paladin is my favourite class
How come none of these reviews on RUclips are confirming whether or not this game is local co-op or only online co-op?!!!!! I've been searching in forums, the game's site, and many videos. The Devs mentioned that they may add local co-op if enough is demanded for it.
it kinda looks like a top-down fantasy risk of rain
You think you can take a look at Hollow Knight?
Love this game.
So it’s like enter the gungeon mixed with risk of rain 2 mixed with vermintide
Hammer watch or Rouge heroes?
WHats the diff in Hammerwatch and "Heroes of Hammerwatch" (this one) I have the prior, is it worth it to get this one?
heroes is a roguelite
"Not your cup of tea" is this a reference?
@@thagomizer8485 you must not know of the lord of tea brakes who rag's' is familiar with.
@@thagomizer8485 lol chill the fuck out boomer.
Nice
When you die do ya lose ya character?
No unless you playing mercenary mode. You die you lose what you gathered from the dungeon. You can send your stuff back to the town.
ay thats not standalone hammerwatch its the heros sequel
saw this and got hyped to buy the game, only to realise it's not supported with mac :(
I wub you rag, i suppose I could watch a review
Wait so this is a review for heroes of hammerwatch but the title just says hammerwatch? So wtf is it which game he is reviewing? Does he not realize the game in the title is not the game he said in the beginning of the video?
I show up just to beat it to the first 5 seconds.
Ffs, watch 8 minutes of this review and it's not even for Hammerwatch.
Would buy but it isn't on mac so...
@Tzuede Off the Cuff Are you trying to make a point?
@Tzuede Off the Cuff Less lazy, more just don't really care about computers. Not really the center of my universe.
What is this on?
what's with the sexualized dog?
Rougelite
won't play for some reason.
@Tzuede Off the Cuff Did that repearedly and gave up. Came back later and its playing fine now.
Is it that hard to post the store link in the description or top comment?
@Tzuede Off the Cuff Go fuck yourself. It should be common courtesy that if you make a review for a game (or even gameplay or whatever), to put a link of where you can buy it in the description.
Really insulting for no other reason than me asking for a link and making so many assumptions shows how utterly moronic you are.
In the time you typed that comment you coulda opened Steam and searched it up.
@@callmequaz9052 already did. i just think it's common courtesy to post the link to the game you're playing/reviewing.
"red diamond" thats called a ruby
I will pass. Rather play Lost Ark or Grim Dawn
with all that said, it still looks kind of boring compared to other similar games in this niche.
I'm a simple man. I see a furry, I hit dislike.
