- Such an awesome game! I forgot to mention, I played this on PC. The stats on the bars on the side obviously wouldn't show up on the Genesis version. But, this is well worth playing in any incarnation: shop.bitmapbur...

Nice find, thanks for sharing!
You also forgot to mention it was released on Vita
You thought I was Sega Drunk, but actually I was Steam Drunk all along
The music is indeed awesome... this is gonna be maybe the most random comment of all time, but the music u showcase at 4:17 sounds like the action music in the amazing Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse flick PLANET TERROR lol... specifically the scene where El Ray goes into the hospital and fights off all the zombies as he walks and parkour's his way down the hall to save ol' wooden leg from being eaten, which I don't know if u know this, but that could kill ya!
@@oscarzxn4067 nice... im just DRUNK Drunk...
Okay I'm sold. That soundtrack is incredible.
i didnt know genesis could do that
It's Savaged Regime so of course it's gonna be good. You should check out his channel. Been subbed since 2016 and his music never disappoints. Mostly rearranges and covers of videogame music. I think Xeno Crisis is his first original videogame music project.

@@demonsty Some games on the genesis were able to use the sound chip very effectively, there are at least a dozen games that managed to have excellent sfx and music to rival snes games, despite the limitations of the SG's sound chip.
Awwwwssooooome
@@TheRetroGamerGuy seconding this channel. Dude is a master.
Jill Valentine in XenoCrisis
This game is like what if Jill and Chris were space Marines. It feels like a Resident Evil elsworlds story.
Yeah basically.
This game has a lot of references to many games/movies. Dune, Resident Evil, Predator, ... I believe it contains even a reference to Harry Potter
The music is composed by a RUclipsr that goes by the name Savaged Regime. I would definitely recommend checking their channel out if you like remixed Genesis music.
Thanks man. I love chiptune music. I wish I knew how to make it myself though, I'm a songwriter and it seems like it'd be a lot of fun. Probably need a pc to make it though, I only have a chromebook
Interesting that you mentioned Akira when describing that toothy boss. Later in your video, we can see the boss is named Shima. The character in Akira who turns into a blob is named Tetsuo Shima. I'm pretty sure the devs were actually thinking of Akira when they designed that monstrosity.
Correct! We wondered if many people would notice that. :)
@@BitmapBureau omg the devs
@@BitmapBureau hey a sequel is a viable project, we are HYPE!

Lol
Xeno Crisis is one of the best modern classic games. I absolutely love it.
Question... Any difference between the MD and Switch version?
I'll have to pick this one up,,👍. They need to make more homebrews for Genesis and SNES these systems are timeless
"akira beef stroganoff with teeth" lmao
First time I've laughed out loud by someone describing a VG boss
Well the boss's name is Shima which is Tetsuo's last name in Akira, so pretty apt. 🤣
I am so stoked. I haven't received your upload notification for months, and just realized there are tons of new videos to catch up on!
I've played through Xenocrisis countless times (on Xbox series X) with my fiancee and we absolutely adored it! What a great game, well worth every euro!
Holy moly, the OST... It sounds like angels descended from heaven to rock out!
The graphics go without saying, but damn, the music is awesome. Especially 4:18
My thoughts exactly!
Bought a copy for genesis a few months ago and it is incredibly well made
I want to thank you for posting and have a great rest of your day.
this game is also sold as a dual cartridge on the Evercade
Thank you for making me aware of this games existence. I'm glad channels like this exist!
That music is SICK. Definitely kept that badass Sega Genesis sound/music
I've had this on my wish list for ages. I look forward to the day I can sit down with a buddy, order a pizza and play this into the night
I've played the Genesis version a good bit - love it! I bought a 3rd party controller with shoulder buttons to be able to play it better - makes a big difference.
Its important to know that if you use ANY continues the game will deny you the opportunity to fight the final boss.
There's a cheat code that fixes it, but its a mean surprise otherwise.
How exactly do the controls work when it comes to shooting? I have a 6 button with shoulder buttons.
Had this one on my Steam wishlist for awhile and I had no idea about it's Sega Genesis background.
Backed this game on Kickstarter years ago and after several delays I can say this game delivered. One of the most inpressive Megadrive games ever made. The ost was done by a chiptune artist on RUclips called Savaged regime who I'd been following a while before that and his soundtrack is the icing on the cake.
Besides Paprium, this is like one of the most high-quality and authentic Genesis games in recent years, other ones feel kinda janky and technically samey (hello, Mega Cat games), with subpar graphics and usage of the same available engines.
This one, however, lacks the dramatic baggage of Paprium which, despite being a solid game by most accounts, was an utter mess in development.
Also, Paprium is something of a dancing bear in that much of what it accomplishes is done through helper chips (well, helper virtual chips emulated via FPGA) rather than through the Genesis hardware itself. It *is* a technical achievement but it also feels as though it was done on the Genesis just because the author could. This game seems more "true" to actually trying to utilize the Genesis hardware itself to its true potential.
Unlike Paprium, the team behind Xenocrisis are not asking for a ridiculous price to purchase the game where Paprium's price has been justified through the use of very questionable rhetoric where the public isn't getting a believable answer.
Xenocrisis has also been made available through just about every relevant, modern day platform making it a "game" for everyone to enjoy rather than a limited run status symbol.
Xenocrisis isn't surrounded by controversial hype or limited supply & demand tactics, but makes its mark on being a well made game. IMO, that's how a good game should be marketed.
Other impressive Genesis games, to come out in recent yrs, worth checking out are Tanglewood & Tanner.
Tanzer seems good to me...
@@Dimensiom
The SNES can't even run Super Mario Kart without a helper chip. Super Mario Bros 3 and Punch-Out on NES? Pitfall II and Stargate on the Atari 2600? Helper chips.
I'll never understand why the Genesis alone is supposed to show off the power of the base console, other than the 68000 being incredibly easy to work with, so you don't usually need the extra assistance.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 I probably phrased my comment in a way that seems critical of the concept of helper chips, which was not my intention. I am well aware of the numerous helper chips used for SNES cartridges and even for some Mega Drive/Genesis titles but as the name implies they exist to "help" with computation that the hardware alone cannot manage efficiently. Paprium, by contrast, seems to practically use the Mega Drive *itself* as the "helper" component with the FPGA setup on the cartridge doing the bulk of the work.
That may be a misunderstanding but the price point for the game to cover the hardware cost does not help matters. The least expensive version of the game is just $20 less than the Mega SG.
"God, I hate that phrase". Right there with you bro.
sucking sucks... ;)
A gud git is 'ard to find.
Same. Its attributed to Dark Souls players
Always really enjoy your videos man. They usually post right as I'm getting up, so it's a fun way to shake off the cobwebs.
Also THAT SOUNDTRACK. You should check out the group MegaDrive 198X. They do pumping synth wave that has that same Genesis sound.
This is probably the hardest game I've ever finished, took me more than 200 hours of playing through more than a year before I could see the good ending.
It's important to note that you only get the best ending by finishing it on hard and without using any continues. Using a single continue is enough to prevent you from fighting the final boss.
The 3 button setup on Mega Drive actually works really well on this. Great game.
I wish the developers would use this engine to make their own version of Shadowrun Genesis.
"Akira beef stroganoff..." you're killing it man, keep it up.
2:54 now I'm hungry for Stroganoff, thanks?
This actually looks even more fun that Smash TV. Can't believe I've never heard of this one.
it was released last year, IIRC.
@@deabreu.tattoo Really? Wow, no wonder I've never heard of it. My Genesis days were of the early 90's. I really need to check this one out.
@@frozenaorta yeah, it's also a massive rom, like 48 megs or something.
not as large as Pier Solar, but still larger than anything else back then
@@deabreu.tattoo Jesus, that's huge for Genesis. Wasn't Chrono Trigger only like 32? And that was huge back then. Excited to check this out. Thanks for the info!
@@deabreu.tattoo It's 32 mega bits / 4 mega bytes. :)
I love this title. Just to put the information out there. If you happen to own Game Pass on Xbox, this game is one the list currently. Don’t miss out on this classic. If you like retro style games currently on Xbox Game Pass, don’t miss out on playing The Messenger.
Xeno Crisis is a shining example of the sort of games I look for today, actually purchase and cherish. The action is fast, frantic and arcade in nature. The music is pretty special as well. I'd grab a sequel to this in a New York minute.
Saw this on gamepass the other day and didn’t recognized it by name but the cover art picked my interest. Luckily you made a video about it and now I’m sold.
Thank u.
It is just awesome the quality of the last homebrew releases for the Mega Drive, showing what it was really capable off. Damm.
"Akira beef stroganoff served with extra teeth." Not a phrase I thought I'd be hearing today. But seriously, this looks rad as hell! I love how you pay attention & highlight the music in games. A killer score is what can turn an OK game into an awesome game, and this one sounds just incredible!
Love the music at the end!!
This game does look good
An amazing soundtrack to a game where I know I'll never make it past the first boss LOL
You'll get past the first boss LOL. Like he said the first boss comes two minutes after you start playing. It starts getting hard after like the second boss
First boss is easy even in single player lol
@@jangobango2847 okay... second boss then. I think you missed the point.
I remember playing this also on PC (GOG version) actually.
This game (MD version) is also on the Evercade as well, along with Tanglewood, which should have its own video someday. The artist for the game did also made the graphics for Misadventures of Flink and The Adventures of Lomax.
Instantly sold. I'm always looking for good twin-stick shooters.
I have the Mega Drive cart and its such an addictive game with a fun, simple, arcadey gameplay with an awesome soundtrack. The controls works surprisingly good on the Mega Drive. It took me awhile to beat since you need to beat it without using any continues. Yeah its old school difficulty. Anyone who loves top down shooters should definitely grab this gem.
This game also plays like a dream on the Switch. I know people may not think highly of twin-stick shooters, but Xenocrisis is SO GOOD!
Ok I'm certain this OST is what Deckard Cain had in mind when he told us "stay a while and listen".
This game's music is ON POINT.
I’m this game is great, I played it on Xbox. Hard though.
This review was made with love and energy ! :)
This is one of the all time best purchases I've made for my Genesis, and I've been buying for my Genesis since 1991! Great game. Admittedly, I started this playing the rom on a flashcart and then just had to buy the physical copy. Go buy it, people! It's worth it.
It also got an official physical cartridge release on the Evercade which is my preferred way to play it on the go - obviously just the single player mode...
I just bought it for the Genesis. Thanks for the video.
Picking this up today! Awesome thanks for the review, good to see you branching from snes a bit more!
0:30 i played it on the Evercade. It plays well on that device--except it’s only single player. I love content like this; glad these developers are giving us these fun pieces.
I want to thank you for making this video, and hope you have a great rest of your day
Omg dude I love your openings more than life itself
This is currently available on XBOX GamePass! And it really is THAT great.
This looks rad as hecc.
It also stands by the old adage: if a game has "Xeno" in its title, it's gonna have some awesome music
sadly, Xenophobe on NES breaks that rule. What little music it has is meh
@@ChibiKami Dang :(
Well still, that's a pretty solid percentage
Just tried XENO CRISIS this week on the PS VITA and it´s amazing. I´ve been planning to play this game since I saw this review and it´s great. And yes, we deeeeeefinetly need a couple of sequels with more characters, weapons, different routes and levels for the map, like in Binding of Isaac, and there can be a looot more things. Great review and great game.
The soundtrack kicks ass. I give'em that.
That music is top notch!
Hell yeah that 2nd track sounds like something along the lines of KMFDM almost 🤘
Gorgeous old school pixel art & choons, retro tinglies 😘💙
A Crackdown style split screen for a sequel would be a sweeeet upgrade
Every music track by Savage Regime is original with the sole exception of the song that plays at 59 seconds in. It's an absolutely bangin' cover of Trayus by the prog metal band Skyharbor. Highly recommend checking them out.
Really glad you review newer games like this! So many cool home brews out there.
Now I wish I could find an affordable copy of pier solar and I would be a happy camper with my genesis…I think I have an ever drive in the bottom of my closet but it’s not the same as popping in an actual *new cart for a system that hasn’t had games in well over 20 years… I love Xeno Crisis and everything it represents, honestly!
Yeah, the first boss is actually called "Shima" which is Tetsuo's last name in Akira, so that was totally what they were going for. "Shima" when it's not a name usually means "island." It can undergo sound change to "jima" as in the famous Iwo Jima.
There is no Iwo Jima in Japanese. It's called Ioto.
@@kekeke8988 What you're referring to is a complex historical issue I don't really want to get into on a SNES Drunk video. But the short version is Iwo Jima was a historical reading of the kanji, even if it's not supposed to be read that way now, due to the requests of people who didn't want the island forever associated with movies like Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima was the reading in some old Japanese nautical charts, which is why Americans also used the name.
As you know, "jima" can be found in other place names like Tashirojima (田代島) and "Battleship Island" (軍艦島), but I picked a place Americans have actually heard of to illustrate the point about the word/kanji and the sound change from shi to ji.
Iwo Jima and Io Tou are both based on the English name Sulphur Island anyway (硫黄=sulphur).
Game's on Game Pass for those curious, since it's a bit on the expensive side(has yet to go on sale once for Switch). If Xeno Crisis had online co-op I would absolutely adore it, shame I missed my chance for a Switch or PS4 physical
Bought the ROM for it awhile back and added it to my Everdrive and Genesis Mini. Never enough devices to play this game on.
I kickstarted the Genesis version and it’s fantastic. Definitely worth a play no matter what system you play it on
"Akira beef stroganoff with teeth". 🤣🤣🤣
Best description ever! That was awesome!
Definitely going to buy this for Switch when it goes on sale.
I really appreciated the Culex reference 😂
It's not straight from R-Type, it's straight from Lovecraft. it's Cthulhu ;)
4:26 that's one rad Jungle/D&B track! This game looks and sounds great!
That game is awesome. I have it for switch, ps4, and my PSPgo Picodrive emulator.
Hearing Mr. Drunk say he starts Contra III on easy makes me appreciate my skills with the game, I can reach stage 6 on normal without losing a life from pure memory.
Or since I wrote "pure memory", since it was my first SNES game besides Super Mario World, I played too much of it.
I don't know what was going through the composer's head when he made the first area music, but it is insanely good.
What's funny is that with Xenocrisis being on so many formats, you can play this game "any way you can" and most of those ways will end up being legal.
You're right, though. It's great. I have it on Xbox One and I intend to install it on my Genesis Mini later. It's never, ever on sale, but at least the price is justified.
This is a really good game. Great review.
Hey ! I found your channel about 2 months ago and pretty much binge watched the lot lol. Fantastic channel ! Will you ever do Master System games ? Keep up the great work !
At 2:24 those underground creatures are straight out of Tremors.
Love the alien interrogation scene at the end hahaha
Oh man the music at 4:18 : O
this could have been a song from NIN ..... nice : )
Damn, people really can do magic with the Genesis sound chip.
Thank you for reviewing this gam! I love this one and I haven't been able to beat it yet but it's fun!
Spoiler: You have to beat this game with one continue (if you can.) Do not use the blue pills! You'll see why if you get to the end and you use continues.
Great game this one, it was a Kickstarter project quite a few year back and they named the hostages after the backers that picked that perk, so there should be a hostage called Sinisteve but I’ve still yet to see me haha
They released that awesome soundtrack on vinyl
Need more “Segadrunk” intros lol
Holy crap this looks insane. Few things can't beat the sensation of entering a room and go berserk about shooting everything - on your videogame, I must say. The soundtrack is spot on getting the players really psyched. Definitely going for this on Switch!
Amazing homebrew. Playing with the asciipad us the way to go.
Man. I miss classic game room. Snesdrunk kinda has a similar review style to him. This seems like a game perfect for CGR.
Dude I've loved this game as of recent, we need more Smash TV like games.
Yep, this game is sick. It took forever to 1cc on hard mode but it was worth it. Genesis version is a lot easier and enemies aren't nearly as aggressive, but still good fun.
You have to 1cc this game
If you're into twin-stick shooters, I recommend Nex Machina. It was the last pure-arcade game made by Housemarque.
That's a great sega genesis game! There's another game that's really the definition of a hidden gem, that's Dyna Brothers (1 and 2)! It is a Japanese only strategy game, where you don't directly control your units (that happen to be dinosaurs), it has a great soundtrack and a very classic easy to learn hard to master gameplay, and the language barrier doesn't really hinder things that much. The game starts off very easy, but gets reeeal tough by the later levels. You should definitely give them a try
This looks awesome! And that music🤯
This game looks awesome! I have to get it. Homebrew/indie does what big publishers don't.
Aahhhh I’m on the GOOD part of the internet again!!
Switch eh? I may have to look into this. Interesting, never really thought about how homebrews could legit be released on the major platforms...or would that be considered an indie game now?
it's an indie game, through and through.
the difference is mostly semantic, but "homebrew" is usually thrown around for proof-of-concept stuff made usually by a single person
@@deabreu.tattoo Excellent point, never really looked at it from that perspective. I supposed I've played a lot of "legally sold" homebrews since the DSi days then, haha.
I contributed to the Kickstarter of this game and the package I got was sweet. Genesis cartridge CIB and a vinyl copy of the soundtrack, it's marvellous.
An amazing game!
Are you planning on reviewing the SNES version now that it's released there too?
PS. It would have been cool if they'd added the on-screen score and press start, larger font on stage and boss intros, and extra blood details of the Neo Geo port to the SNES port too (all of which would have been entirely possible), especially given how long we had to wait for it there. Still, it got a very solid port regardless.
All those modern concepts running on a Genesis, like player revival. Awww yes. This game is a prime example of how games would have evolved even if our technology had stagnated somehow.
