I was talking to our 3D artist from our broadcast department showed him what I did following this tutorial since it was a bit unstable caching the animation. He suggested I fisrt convert the spheres to poly objects than group them all and use only one soft body tag on the whole group. This indeed made the caching much more stable. so just a heads up. thanks again!
hi, thanx for effort. i am trying to making children's play dough softbody. i dont want to be bouncy but always the shape changes, its like inflate after first touch. how can i avoid that ?
Absolutely. I've been learning C4D over the last couple of months moving from a background in 3DS Max so your tutorials have been a really really great resource! Thanks again.
Love it! The fact that you did not use a cloner helped me understand the dynamics and behaviour so much more! 🙏 😊 Thanks! Love your other channel as well!
I found that Hexahedron type of sphere looks more like your reference than Icosahedron one. It gets deeper in those corners of cube. But you need to change your soft body settings after changing the type of sphere.
For sure, I do like the hexahedron for this as well, it maintains a more inflated cube type of look that indeed works best for this kind of shape! Thanks for the heads up!
Awesome tutorial! Still don't know why sometimes sudenly some of my soft body shapes escapes from my colider body box making strange deformations when they are not even tuching each other or the box; like they manage to escape in some point. Thanks again!

hi EJ! your tutorials are helping me soooo much learning c4d! i was wondering if you have a tutorial with an animation similar to a lava lamp? i'm struggling to figure it out and since i'm new to this program i think i might not be searching for the right things. your tutorials are the best to follow so i figured i would ask! thanks so much :)
Hi. What is the difference between Structural and Stiffness? Does Stiffness refer to how easily (Rate) an object is deformed from its original state by another object and how quickly it returns? While, Structure refers to how much (Amount) an object can be deformed? Thanks for everything.
Hi EJ, I just finished 3D basecamp, you're an awesome teacher! I'm trying this but for some reason, this doesn't work for me. When I hit SET INITIAL STATE it works at first, frame 0 sets to the deformed state I want, but when I activate dynamic transition at frame 50, it begins to revert to the original cloner grid layout. There is also that weird hiccup from frame 49-50, when changing the dynamic state, which I can't get rid of. Is there another way to do this?
Hi there! I followed every step with same number of frames and it came out nice. But, I have a problem in the Looping part at the end of the Tuto: From frame 51 till end, the 'blobs' crush into each other, and "destroy" each other (when they collide, they go through and make holes) and it doesn't get back to the initial state. It just ends up crazy! I don't know how to fix that, I tried a few things but didn't find a solution. Anyone had the same bug (and fixed it)? Otherwise, thanks very much, it's a great great tutorial! I learned lots of stuff!
I have a problem with my render. I see the bodies changing its shapes in my visor but when I press cmd+R to see the render I only see the spheres perfectly, like dynamics dont work in the render... why? :( . PLEASE HELP
you need to cache the dynamics to see if properly in the middle of the animation. when you render in like frame 45 or something, its rendering & starting the dynamics at that frame so it's inaccurate. Caching solves all this!
Thank you for such great tutorial, here's my noob question: Wouldn't it be easier if you just place a single Simulation tag on the balls parent (the null object), so you don't need to syncronize all those individual tags?
Hey! I will try to be clear with my question. Is there any way to make a soft body editable once the "deformation" is applied? Can i use the shape in frame X in another project or in frame 1? Thanks!
Hi, I'm a beginner in C4D, your vid helped me a lot! I was wondering If it is possible to make that "crazy stuff" at 6:47 visible when rendering ? There are only the normal spheres if I do so.

Hey EJ, great tutorial, as always! I thought you might help me as I followed all the instructions you gave and when not rendered my project looks just fine. But when I do render it, the balls/blobs do not inflate ! They float and move around etc but they keep their "original" size. I tried to add more pressure, bake the dynamics etc. Nothing happens ! Please please please help me cause I really love this animation!
I have a question: I'm doing something very similar but having the soft bodies inflate with the pressure feature. The animation looks great and it's acting like I want it to. But when I render it out the spheres don't render the new formed shape. The result into their original state. If that makes sense? As always thank you, and any direction help would be great.
Try caching the dynamics! when you render out at any other frame than frame 0, it will render oddly because the dynamic simulation always starts at 0, so rendering out at say frame 30 will make the dynamics not play back correclty nor render correctly, so give caching a try!
You can create a HDRI environment by creating a Sky object and finding an HDRI (you can find many for free on the web) and applying the HDRI image to a material's luminance channel, as well as using an Area Light, and turning on it's Show in Reflection in the Light Detail's tab
This tutorial was really helpful! Thanks EJ. I only had an issue that I wasn't able to fix. There is always a gap in-between the spheres (they never touch each other). I've tried modifying friction and collision noise values, and also setting to 0 the collision margin into the expert tag, but it didn't work. Do you have any idea why this is happening?
Hey EJ! Great tutorial, I was just wondering if you know if it's possible to assign more CPU or GPU power to the viewport to simulate the soft bodies faster? It seems to be very slow in comparison to much more detailed simulations like turbulenceFD etc? Thanks!
Try going into your dynamics expert tab and find the Collision Margin. It is probably set to 1cm. If your scene is small, then set it to a decimal number like 0,01cm
I'm using this technique to fill a box with squishy spheres but I don't need the simulation to continue. I basically just need to combine all the spheres into one static mesh once it reaches a point I'm happy with. How might I do that? PLEASE HELP!
at the frame you want to freeze, go to the dynamics tag and hit the "set initial state" button and then delete the dynamics tag (make a backup copy of the setup so you can go back to the old state)
@@eyedesyn I figured out that I needed to convert the primitives to be editable before running the simulation. Then I was able to delete the dynamics tag at the desired frame and the simulation would hold.
great stuff man. I have a proble: when i put the group null of the spheres in sub-surface, the spheres still simulate dynamics but renders as a perfect spheres (not deformed) Why?
I tryed. This only make my simulation smoother. I noticed that it happens only in render region and only when i put all the spheres under a Subdivision surface. When i final render the scene it render deformed as i want. Or if turn off the subdivision surface, the sphere renders deformed even in render region. Could it be a question of rendering or pre-rendering settings?
So tried this out last night. My one problem is that some of the sphere globs will start tearing despite being placed away from the others. I tried bumping up their structure through the soft body tag but they continue to do that one thing.
And if that doesn't work, go into your Dynamic Project Settings by hitting CMD/CNTRL+ D and go into the Expert tab and up the Steps per Frame and Max Solver.
Thanks for yet another awesome tutorial! I have a question though, if you can help it would be great.... When I render to viewport(or anywhere for that matter) it just renders the spheres in their initial state, I tried caching the animation but no luck....I'm using R17 Studio.

Almost everytime I set up some Softbody objects there is like a space between the objects when colliding. So they are never touching really, do you have an idea what the problem could be? @@eyedesyn Hola! I'm SUPER GRATEFUL for your help. The cache/bake worked, it made me so happy to be able to get the final result. Thank you so much for your tutorials, they are THE BEST out there.😊
Hi there! The looping technique has also worked for many others so perhaps you're missing a step? The only thing I can think of is that you're not "Setting Initial State" after the spheres are fully inflated, that could cause you issues. Feel free to email me a scene file with the issue and I'd be happy to troubleshoot it with you! Hope that helps!
I have no way of email you directly and no drop box account after they mysteriously upgraded me without permission and charged my account. Here is the issue, there is no way for me to know when the exact moment of full inflation is so that's probably the problem. If you know how to find this exact moment on compositions, let me know...otherwise, I don't think I could reliably make things loop with this technique. Thanks for your contribution to the community!
You can e-mail me directly at ej (at) eyedesyn (dot) com. As for your issue, there's no "magic amount of time" to wait until everythings fully inflated but typically after 30-40 frames everything should be fully inflated. If you watch my tutorial where I set the loop point by hitting the "Set Initial State", its about 30 frames in. What the problem could be is if you let the simulation run TOO long, meaning the objects get way too far from it's original position, the dynamics transition may have issues trying to get each blob back to where it needs to be due to the limitations of the softbody dynamics. So you can try to avoid this and achieve a nice loop like I got by doing one of two things: 1) Not making the total simulation too long 2) Making the dynamics transition time a bit longer. I'd shoot for number 1 as the dynamics transition time isn't too reliable. My total loop was about 90 frames. Hope that helps!
Ciao io ho un problema , quando uso l'emettitore in C4d e vadoa renderizzare non mi renderizza tutti gli oggetti generati dall'emettitore ! C'è forse una impostazione nel render ?

sorry im explaining very bad... i meant the "" two squares "" as guides inside your viewport,im explaining better ?? thanks Ej !!
Hi!
My render is different from the preview of the editor.
¿Can you help me? Thanks a lot!
If you're rendering a frame in the middle of the animation, you should cache your animation first to prevent any issues at render time!
Right! haha
Looping technique does not work. Tried it with various levels of complexity and not a single one worked even when it was only two spheres.
So you can try to avoid this and achieve a nice loop like I got by doing one of two things:
1) Not making the total simulation too long
2) Making the dynamics transition time a bit longer.
I'd shoot for number 1 as the dynamics transition time isn't too reliable. My total loop was about 90 frames. Hope that helps!
you are great
thaks, thanks, thanks
Welcome welcome welcome!
Thannnnnnnnk you !!!!
i just had been wondering how to do this style these days then my teacher gave me this link !! thanks a lot :) really clearly and useful as always !!
That's awesome! What school do you go to?
Thank you for watching! :)
i am from Taiwam , I had a semester of c4d class in university ! but so hard XD i learn slowly !
Thats great! Keep on learning!
usefull. thanks
yay
Like you!
having issues making this work with Arnold.. any idea why?
I've never used Arnold so i couldn't tell ya! Sorry!
When I try to use soft body dynamics on torus it inflate like a balloon D:
Hmm...try upping the expert settings?
@@eyedesyn where do you find the expert settings within the object or simulation tag?
when i see the render, the soft body tag isnt visible not here why? :c
try caching the dynamics!
Ciao io ho un problema , quando uso l'emettitore in C4d e vadoa renderizzare non mi renderizza tutti gli oggetti generati dall'emettitore ! C'è forse una impostazione nel render ?
I would try to cache the emitter or make sure in the Emitter settings that you have "Show Objects" is turned on. Also be sure to have the dynamics tag on the correct object as well!
Thanks a lot, I will try !!!
Thanks so much ! I will also try this way !!!!
very welcome, hope it helps!

Can you make a beeple style tutorial?
He's got so many styles!!!
eyedesyn a sci-fi kind of looking structure would be great as a tutorial
DigitalRandomArt Chris Schmidt did one a year or two ago. Check on GreyscaleGorilla.
Yeah definitely check that out! Was a great Chris tutorial!
eyedesyn I have seen all the tutorials on youtube ahaha
★ThankYou★
Thanks so much for all your kind comments! :)
hey it take 55 min to render why
you got a slow computer! haha
Uh oh, my version of Cinema 4D R17 doesn't have collider body.
I'm guessing you have Broadcast version? You'll need to have Studio version for Dynamics fun!

I appreciate the quick response, thank you very much!
You bet!
